Chapter 4

Author: Sweetie Moore
"Contract? I'm not heading to the office later, so I can sign it whenever I get there. The oatmeal won't taste good once it gets cold."

Cameron picked up the container and headed for the door.

The eagerness on his face was so obvious, and I said frankly, "It's the divorce agreement."

He stopped in his tracks and slowly turned around, wearing the smug expression of someone who thought he'd finally seen through my little game.

"So, you're still pretending you're not upset?" he said with a smirk. "All I did was accept her proposal. It was just a way to lighten the mood. Besides, I married you, didn't I? What more could you possibly want?"

"Then let's get divorced," I said evenly. "I'll get out of your way and let you two have your love story."

"How many times do I have to tell you?" he sulked, furrowing his brow. "Nothing is going on between Poppy and me. We're just coworkers.

"You're not a teenager anymore, so why are you still playing this jealous-girlfriend game every time something happens?"

He gave me the same explanation countless times whenever Poppy came between us. I used to argue back, but now I'd grown tired.

"Yeah, I understand." I shrugged. "You're just coworkers."

Yet somehow my lack of reaction seemed to make him even angrier. "What kind of attitude is that? Haven't I already explained everything to you?"

"Nothing." I shook my head. "You should hurry and bring her breakfast. It wouldn't be right to make a sick person go hungry."

He slammed the container onto the table and glared at me, full of anger and disappointment.

"I took care of her all day yesterday, and I'm exhausted. If you're not going to help, fine, but could you at least stop making everything into an argument?"

My fingers tightened around my spoon. I'd thought my heart had already gone numb, yet his words still managed to hurt me.

I couldn't help recalling the video Poppy had posted on social media, where Cameron had been bending over backward to take care of her, feeding her and fussing over her with a tenderness I'd never once seen in his eyes.

Ten years of being by his side, and I still couldn't compete with someone he'd known for barely a hundred days.

Facing his accusations, I didn't shoot back because, after everything that had happened, I no longer had the slightest desire to waste my breath.

Yet his anger continued to build when I remained silent.

Eventually, he seemed to remember that Poppy was still waiting for him and decided that even arguing with me wasn't worth wasting his precious time. He gave me one last furious look before slamming the door behind him.

My assistant started sending me one message after another, asking me to deal with business matters. I told him to take everything directly to Cameron, then submitted my resignation to Human Resources.

The HR manager rejected it, saying, "Mr. Cox said you need to discuss this with him personally."

Wasn't Cameron busy taking care of Poppy? Apparently, he still had time to interfere with my resignation.

I called him a dozen times, but none of my calls were answered.

Then I opened Poppy's social media feed, and sure enough, there he was. She had been discharged from the hospital, and he had gone to pick her up before bringing her back to the office for a celebration.

I hailed a cab and headed straight to the company.

Once I stepped through the doors, several coworkers spotted me and immediately stepped aside, whispering among themselves.

"Stephanie is in serious trouble. I heard she made Mr. Cox's favorite person sick at the annual meeting."

"Wasn't she supposed to be Mr. Cox's right-hand woman?"

"Right-hand woman? She's been with him for nine years, and she's still just a secretary. How can you be that clueless?"

...

Their words followed me into the elevator, and as the doors closed, I felt my heart sink.

Everyone else could see what was happening, yet I'd been the only one foolish enough to keep pretending I couldn't.

I'd brought countless deals to the company and helped generate millions in revenue, yet after nine years, I was still nothing more than a secretary.

Poppy, on the other hand, had been here for barely three months. She hadn't even learned her way around the computer systems before Cameron promoted her to vice president.

Who did he favor? The answer was obvious all along.

I just hadn't been willing to admit it until I'd already hurt myself beyond repair.

When the elevator doors opened, I was greeted by a noisy celebration as everyone gathered around to congratulate Poppy on her recovery.

Cameron led me into the storage room, where dozens of neatly wrapped gift boxes had been stacked from floor to ceiling. He picked up a brand-new pair of earrings and pressed them into my hand before eagerly opening the other boxes one by one, explaining which ones were the gifts he'd bought to make up for all the years he'd neglected me.I dropped the earrings, and the tiny pieces of jewelry rolled straight into the back of the cabinet."I had those custom-made for you." Cameron dropped to the floor in a panic, reaching into the narrow gap to fish them out.I shook my head. "Once something is lost, finding another one doesn't make it the same thing."He still refused to give up, reaching deeper into the gap until his hand came back covered in dust."I'll have another pair made. I'll make them the same as the original," he insisted.I was speechless. If I hadn't needed to finish the divorce, I wouldn't have bothered going through any of this with him.It was obvious what he was

"Stop dragging this out. I gave you nine years of my youth, and I'm exhausted."I pressed the pen into his hand, and Cameron's fingers trembled as he finally signed the agreement. He immediately turned his face away, trying to hide the tears in his eyes.Because of recent changes to the law, signing the divorce agreement wasn't enough to make the divorce official. We still had to go through a mandatory waiting period before it could be finalized. That was fine with me. I'd simply come back once the waiting period was over, sign the final paperwork, and be done with it.For the first time in years, I felt truly free, and I couldn't help smiling as I reached for the door. Cameron suddenly wrapped his arms around me from behind. "Don't push me away. Just let me hold you for a little longer."I let him hold me while his heavy breathing assailed my shoulder. Right then, a cab pulled up outside, and my mother stepped out, waving to me.Cameron followed me outside. "Mom..."It was th

Poppy panicked at the prospect of being transferred, and almost immediately, her asthma seemed to flare up again.Cameron instinctively reached out to steady her, but then he caught sight of me watching. He stopped himself and forced himself to sound indifferent."Her medication is in her bag. Get it for her.""We're getting divorced," I said smoothly. "You don't have to worry about appearances anymore."It turned out that he had known where the problem in our marriage lay all along; he simply hadn't cared enough to change anything because he'd been comfortable with things the way they were. The proud, self-assured man finally lowered his head and pleaded with me. "Stephanie, can you stay?"For a moment, I almost saw the boy he'd been ten years ago—the frightened teenager who'd been thrown out of his parents' house and had once leaned against my shoulder, showing his vulnerable side.I'd comforted him gently and promised that he could always rely on me. But somewhere during thos

"I'm taking it to my lawyer," Cameron stammered. "Who knows what kind of trap you might have set in here?"While he didn't love me, he refused to let me go, which left me with only one conclusion. He was simply trying to make things difficult for me."If you don't want to sign, that's fine. We can settle everything through the courts," I said, turning to leave.Cameron suddenly grabbed my hand, his eyes glistening. "Are you really going to be this heartless?"I yanked my hand free, ready to shoot back.Poppy hurried over and stepped in front of him, her face flushed with indignation."Cameron hasn't done anything to betray you. He's such a good man. How can you humiliate him in front of the entire company like this?"She stood protectively in front of him, then thoughtfully ushered the curious employees away."A good man? Fine. I'm giving him to you," I said evenly, tired of the back-and-forth.I turned to leave, but Cameron called after me. "Fine. We'll go to the courthouse a

Looking back, I found those things laughable. For years, I was too embarrassed to hang out with my friends. I was afraid that I couldn't afford my share of the bill.Yet they assumed that, after marrying a wealthy man, I was deliberately being stingy with them, and one by one, they stopped inviting me.I'd spent all those years struggling alongside Cameron, only to end up with nothing but an empty house and no one left beside me.After a long silence, Cameron reached into his wallet, pulled out a bank card, and held it out to me."I only made you split the expenses to cut unnecessary spending. I've never touched this money; it's all been sitting there," he explained with good faith. "If money is what this is about, you don't have to pay for anything anymore. I'll cover all of our living expenses from now on."He looked at me expectantly, as though the offer should have been enough to make me stay. But I pushed the card back. "There's no need to bring up the past."If money had e

"What are you going to do overseas?" Cameron asked, confused. He thought for a moment and added cautiously, "Are you planning to take a trip? If so, wait until things settle down here, and I'll go with you. Just stop making a fuss. The company is in a critical stage of growth, and I can't just walk away right now."For years, I'd wanted to travel with him and see more of the world. But every time, he'd poured cold water on the idea, asking what was so special about looking at scenery when we could spend that time landing more deals instead.Yet ever since Poppy came along, he'd been flying off with her every few days. Even now, the photos from their trips were still all over her social media, showing the two of them leaning against each other with bright, happy smiles. No wonder everyone at the company assumed they were a couple. Cameron was the only one still stubbornly insisting that they were nothing more than coworkers."No, thanks." I shook my head and handed him my resignati
