Adam paced back and forth, restless. The thought of Samantha getting hurt because of him was eating him alive. Worst of all, the guilt—he knew it was his fault. If he hadn’t flagged her down that night and forced his way into her car, none of this would be happening.

But then another thought slipped in: if it hadn’t been for that exact mess, he never would’ve met her.

“Calm down, Adam. You’re gonna give yourself a heart attack,” Sophia said.

“They should be here any minute, and Doc Carlos too. I called him like you asked,” Caio added.

Adam went to the window again, staring out like he could will the car to appear. Caio and Sophia exchanged a quick glance. He looked away fast. Every time their eyes met, he felt exposed. She was beautiful, and being secretly in love with her made him terrified he’d give something away—and she’d tell Adam.

Caio stepped back and dropped into a chair. Standing there stressing wasn’t going to make them arrive any faster.

The doctor had arrived, and Sophia led him straight to Samantha’s room. She waited outside while he stitched her up.The second the door opened, Sophia jumped in.“Is she okay?”“Yeah, the arm needed a few stitches, but nothing serious. I left a mild sedative in case she can’t sleep. She seemed pretty shaken and scared—just trying not to show it,” the doctor said.“Got it, Doc. I’ll talk to her. Maybe she needs to vent. But I’ll walk you out.”“No need, sweetheart. I know this house like the back of my hand. Stay with her. I can find the door,” Carlos said with a warm smile.Sophia smiled back and said goodbye. She knocked lightly on the bedroom door and slipped inside.Samantha was sitting on the edge of the bed, staring at the floor.“So… everything good?” Sophia asked, easing into the conversation as she sat beside her.“Yeah. He prescribed anti-inflammatory and painkillers. It’ll heal fast.” Samantha paused, then added, “There’s something I’ve been wondering about, but I keep forg

  • Unexpected Encounter   Gathering Information

Sabrina stormed into Oliver’s apartment, already fuming. He hadn’t come to pick her up himself—just sent his goons.“How could you not come get me from that clinic, Oliver? You sent your lackeys? Is that how you’re gonna treat me now?” she snapped, voice loud and sharp.Oliver shot up from his chair and clamped a hand around her throat in one fluid move.“Who the hell do you think you are, talking to me like that? Just because you spread your legs for me doesn’t mean you get to mouth off whenever you feel like it. Don’t kid yourself thinking you’re anything special. I put you in my bed—I can kick you out just as fast.”He let go. Red marks bloomed where his fingers had been. She coughed hard, hand flying to her neck.“Now get out of my sight. Guest room tonight. I don’t want you anywhere near my bed,” he said, dropping back into his seat like nothing had happened. She stormed into the guest room just like he’d ordered, still clutching her throat where the red marks lingered. Oliver wa

  • Unexpected Encounter   Testing the Waters

Samantha eased the door open, slow and cautious, half-expecting the wrong face on the other side. When she saw it really was Adam’s guy, she pulled it wide.Fear was written all over her. Marcos clocked it immediately and kept his voice low.“My name’s Marcos. I’m getting you out of here and to somewhere safe. Like I said, we need to move fast. If there’s more of them outside, it’ll get ugly.”Her eyes dropped to his hand—the gun steady in his grip. His words didn’t do much to calm her. This whole thing felt like some bad action movie: break-ins, slaps, criminals chasing her. All in one night. She stepped out behind him. Marcos noticed her staring at the gun, then at the two bodies sprawled on the floor.“Stay close, right behind me. I grabbed your car keys. I’m on a bike, but you’re in no shape for that. As for these assholes—they’re not dead. Just out cold. After what they pulled here, especially with you, Adam’s gonna want a little chat with them.”She hadn’t said a word to him yet

  • Unexpected Encounter   Surprise Attack

Samantha stepped inside, dropped the grocery bags on the kitchen counter, and headed straight to the bathroom to start filling the tub. Her purse (phone inside) stayed on the table. She walked to the bedroom, already tugging down the zipper on the back of her uniform dress. The fabric slid off her shoulders and pooled at her feet, leaving her in just underwear. She bent to pick it up, completely unaware of the eyes watching from the cracked-open wardrobe. She grabbed the silk robe hanging on the door and slipped it on, then padded back to the bathroom to adjust the faucet. The tub was almost full. Everything was ready for the long, relaxing bath she’d been dreaming of.On the table, her phone buzzed like crazy. She didn’t hear a thing.Adam was the one blowing it up. The second Marcos reported intruders and dead guards, he’d started calling nonstop to warn her she was in danger. No answer. His gut twisted tighter with every ring.Outside, Marcos had already slipped into the backyard,

  • Unexpected Encounter   Heading Home

The IV bag finally ran empty. Samantha stared at it, counting the seconds until someone came to free her. She was desperate to get home. Staying in that hospital one minute longer, especially with the risk of Douglas showing up again, felt unbearable. She needed space, silence, her own four walls.Lucky for her, the door opened and Pedro walked in, flashing the biggest grin the moment he saw she was awake. His presence was the only bright spot in this place.“Ready to blow this joint?” he asked, all energy.“Beyond ready. Get this needle out of my arm already. I need to get the hell out of here.”Pedro caught the edge in her voice instantly.“Okay, what happened? Why the rush to escape? Hot date with your ‘boyfriend’?” he teased, jumping straight into it.“He’s not my boyfriend. He’s my boss,” she muttered, clearly annoyed.Pedro plopped down on the edge of the bed (IV already out) and crossed his arms.“What do you mean, your boss? The guy looked ready to throw hands with Douglas rig
