Chapter 5: Part-time Job

| Part-time Job |

THE NEXT morning, I woke up early. Reina went out to grab our breakfast, and I stayed because I was busy typing and filling up my biodata. I've decided to find a part-time job before the school year starts.

When I'm done, the next I did was fix myself. Doing my daily routine—bathing, changing clothes, caressing my face with a powder, and apply a lip tint on my lips.

I put the paper inside the brown envelope. I will try to pass this in the restaurant we've been to yesterday. I bet they're hiring because I only saw three employees working—one cashier and two waitresses. I'll just try my luck, who knows?

I'm about to close my bag when Reina opened the door, holding the plastic in her left hand and two plastic cups in the other one.

"There are so many students in the cafeteria, it's just seven in the morning," she mumbled and placed the plastic and cups above the coffee table.

"Is that so? C.U students woke up early. What do we expect, you know only bitches and jerks woke up late."

"Yeah, and you know what, there's a rumor that the prince of Denmark was here."

"What? Seriously? Denmark has a great school for royalties. Why does he need to go here?"

She opened her cup of tea and sipped, and gave me the other one. I reached it.

She shrugged off her shoulders. "I don't know. I just heard it when I pass by some geeks downstairs," she replied.

Denmark was known to be perfect because of its community and establishments. Its leader, the King, was known because of his projects that gathered titles around the world, and the most interesting part in Denmark was the rumored magical chamber that brings you to fairyland. I always read it in books. Some were believing in the magic chamber but some were not.

Even me, I don't believe it as long as I can't have proof that it exists.

"Anyway, I'm going back to the restaurant we've been through yesterday. I'll pass this," I lifted the envelope I'm holding.

"Okay," she answered and began to eat.

"I just passed this and get back here so we can explore around."

"What if you got hired immediately?" she asked.

It's possible. "If that's the case, then I'll start working, besides, we can see the whole place some other time."

"Okay, if you say so. Just text me whatever the result is. I'm just here," she said.

I nodded and continued to eat. When I'm done, I just did some retouching on my lip and went out. Reina escorted me downstairs and wave goodbye to me.

THE CHIMES of the restaurant cling when I entered. It was just eight in the morning, and only a few people were inside, eating. They were all in the cafeteria, which explains, why there are so many students inside the cafeteria when Reina grabbed our breakfast.

"Hi," I greeted the cashier. Can I speak to the manager, please?" I asked, politely.

The girl smiled and instructed me to wait. When she came back, she's already with a woman in her forties, wearing eyeglass.

"Good morning, Ma'am."

The woman didn't reply. She eyed me from head to foot. Lowering her eyeglass to see me. I smiled, awkwardly. I don't know what to do but did smile again.

"What are you up to?" she asked with her authoritative voice.

I hemmed and stand properly. "I'm here to apply for a job, Ma'am."

She raises her left eyebrow. "Do we look like we need workers? Did you see any notice outside that we're hiring?" she asked, ruggedly.

My eyes open widely. Is she angry? What did I do? But they have only three workers.

"I... I was just trying, Ma'am. Because I only saw three people who were working yesterday, and I concluded that you may need one. I'm... I'm sorry."

I turned around. Shit, it's embarrassing. I'm about to walk when she stopped me.

"You're hired!"

Wait... what? Did I hear it right? I'm hired? I immediately turned around and face her. "A-Are you sure, Ma'am?"

She put her hands in her waist and stared at me. "Do you want me to get back what I have just said?"

I shook my head. "No, Ma'am. I... thank you so much," I replied and bowed.

"You may start now if you want to," she said.

She was about to turn around when I stopped her. "Ma'am, are you not going to check this?" I asked while showing the brown envelope.

"No need. You, being an observer, is enough. Being a good observer is more than just self-awareness. Observing oneself is essential, but observing others provides another angle to absorb. Together, observing self and others creates richer insights to use. And I need an employee like you," she answered that makes my heart flutter. "Kara, you'll be in counter 2 and you," she pointed to me, " be in counter 1."

Kara and I nodded.
