The protective dome hummed with violet energy, but it wouldn’t last forever.

Serena sat against the ancient pillar, knees drawn to her chest, her body trembling from magical exhaustion. Kael’s deep gashes had closed thanks to her healing, but the emotional wounds inside her were bleeding worse than ever.

“I can hear her,” she whispered. “Elara. She’s calling me.”

Damien crouched beside her, cool fingers brushing a strand of dark hair from her sweat-streaked face. “You don’t have to face her.”

“I do,” Serena said, voice cracking. “She raised me. She was my mother when I had none. If there’s even a sliver of her left… I have to try.”

Kael growled low, still naked and streaked with blood. “Then we face her together. No one goes alone anymore.”

The dome flickered. A new surge of corrupted magic slammed against it from the other side.

It was time.

The Confrontation

Serena dropped the outer barrier. The horde poured in once more, but this time they parted like a sea.

Professor Elara walked through them.

Her body was a grotesque fusion — half-burned flesh from Serena’s earlier fire, half-regenerated by the virus. Black veins crawled across her skin, and her once-kind eyes glowed blood-red. Twisted violet-and-crimson magic crackled around her fingers.

“Serena, my precious girl…” The voice was Elara’s, but distorted, layered with monstrous hunger. “Why did you burn me? I only wanted to protect you.”

Serena stepped forward, tears already falling. “You’re not her. Not anymore.”

Kael and Damien flanked her, ready to strike.

Elara smiled sadly. “The Lunar Rage is a gift. It removes pain. It removes weakness. Join us. We can be a family again.”

She raised her hands.

The battle erupted.

Corrupted coven witches attacked from all sides, flinging dark spells that warped the air. Serena fought with raw grief, her violet magic clashing violently against the corrupted versions of spells she once learned at Elara’s side.

Every blast hurt more than the last.

Kael tore through the lesser infected, roaring in fury every time one of the turned witches called Serena’s name. Damien moved like a shadow of death, protecting Serena’s blind spots while keeping a constant eye on her.

“Serena!” Elara called again, launching a spear of black lightning. “Come home!”

Serena screamed and countered with a massive wave of pure violet fire. The two spells collided in a blinding explosion that threw everyone back.

In the chaos, Elara closed the distance.

She grabbed Serena by the throat, lifting her off the ground. Up close, Serena could see fragments of the woman she loved — the gentle smile, the proud eyes when Serena mastered a new spell.

“I’m sorry…” Serena choked out, tears streaming. “I love you.”

She slammed both palms against Elara’s chest and unleashed everything.

A brilliant column of violet flame engulfed them both. Elara shrieked — a sound of agony, love, and monstrous rage mixed together. Her body burned once more, this time completely.

As the fire died, Elara’s eyes cleared for one final moment. She touched Serena’s cheek with a charred hand.

“My brave girl… the three of you… are the hope…”

Then she crumbled into ash.

Serena dropped to her knees in the pile of ashes, sobbing uncontrollably. The grief she had been holding back since the basement ritual chamber finally broke free. She screamed until her voice gave out, clutching the ashes of the only mother she had ever known.

Kael shifted back to human and pulled her into his strong arms without hesitation. Damien knelt on her other side, wrapping his arms around both of them.

They held her as she shattered.

“I killed her twice,” Serena wept. “She raised me… and I burned her twice.”

“You gave her peace,” Damien whispered against her hair. “That was mercy.”

Kael pressed his forehead to hers. “You’re not alone in this pain anymore. We carry it with you.”

For several long minutes, the only sounds in the chamber were Serena’s broken sobs and the distant growls of the remaining infected outside.

After the Grief

When Serena finally calmed, something had shifted inside all three of them.

She looked up at Kael and Damien, eyes red and swollen but burning with new resolve. “The prophecy… Elara confirmed it. We’re the three bloods. The only ones who can stop this.”

Kael nodded. “Then we stop it. Whatever it takes.”

Damien’s hand rested on her lower back, warm despite his vampire nature. “Together.”

Serena leaned into both of them, exhausted but no longer broken. The closeness felt different now — charged with comfort, protection, and the slow-burning spark of something much deeper. Desire. Need. Connection.

The ley lines beneath the chamber pulsed brighter, as if responding to their growing bond.

But the respite was short.

A new, deeper roar echoed from even lower levels — something ancient and massive had been awakened by the battle.

Kael tensed. “We can’t stay here forever. The virus is spreading beyond campus. We need to find the source… or the cure.”

Serena wiped her face and stood, still supported by both men. “There’s a place deeper underground. The Nexus Chamber. I saw it in the vision. That’s where we need to go.”

As they prepared to descend further, the ground shook violently. From the ashes of the fallen coven rose several shadowy figures — not fully infected, but something worse: former witches who had partially merged with the virus, now hunting specifically for Serena with twisted versions of her own magic.

The real descent into darkness had only just begun.
