Chapter 8: Escape to the Quad

The underground archives had become a tomb.

After the emotional wreckage of Elara’s final death, the three survivors knew they couldn’t stay. The protective dome was cracking, and the virus was evolving — new sounds, new horrors rising from deeper levels.

“We move,” Kael said, voice rough but steady. He had found a pair of torn security guard pants and forced them on. “The Nexus is deeper, but we need supplies, weapons, and a clearer path. We go up, cross the quad, and find a new route down.”

Damien checked the shadows around them. “The main exit is compromised. We’ll have to fight our way through the upper library again.”

Serena stood between them, eyes still red from crying but glowing with determination. “I’ll open a temporary path. Stay close.”

They ascended the stairs like ghosts of war.

The Grand Archive Chamber’s dome shattered behind them as they left. The horde roared back to life.

The upper library was worse than before.

Bookshelves had been toppled like dominos. Pages fluttered through the air like dying butterflies. Infected swarmed everywhere — some crawling on ceilings, others mutated beyond recognition.

Kael shifted fully and led the spearhead. His silver-black wolf form smashed through the first wave, jaws snapping, claws shredding. Damien moved like liquid night, appearing and disappearing, leaving trails of torn throats and arterial spray. Serena ran in the middle, hurling violet barriers and explosive runes to cover their flanks.

“Left!” Damien shouted.

A group of corrupted football players barreled through the fiction section. Kael met them head-on. The impact shook the floor. He tore through two of them before the third slammed him into a marble pillar. Bone cracked.

Serena reacted instantly — a spear of violet magic pierced the attacker’s skull. Kael shook it off and kept moving.

They reached the main hall.

The giant atrium glass had been completely shattered. Rain had stopped, but moonlight poured in like blood, turning the entire space crimson.

Hundreds of infected filled the hall.

In the center stood the mutated remains of the football team’s defensive line — now grotesque giants.

“This is it,” Kael growled through the partial shift, voice distorted. “We break through or we die here.”

Serena’s hands glowed brighter than ever. “I’ll clear a path. When I say go… run.”

She slammed her palms together. A massive violet shockwave exploded outward, blasting infected aside and creating a temporary corridor toward the main doors.

“Go!”

They sprinted.

Kael took the lead again, roaring as he bulldozed anything in their way. Damien carried Serena when her magic faltered, his speed keeping them ahead of the closing horde. Claws grazed their backs. Teeth snapped inches from their heels.

They burst through the shattered main doors into the open night air.

The Quad

The campus quad was a warzone under the blood moon.

Fires burned in several buildings. Bodies lay scattered across the grass. The once-beautiful fountain ran red.

They didn’t stop running until they reached the center, near the fountain. Only then did they pause, chests heaving, bodies pushed to their absolute limit.

Kael shifted back to human, panting. “We made it… outside.”

Damien set Serena down gently. She looked around at the destruction — the place where she used to study, laugh, and dream — now a graveyard.

“I used to sit right there,” she whispered, pointing to a bench now covered in blood. “With Mia… my human best friend.”

Kael pulled her close with one arm, Damien standing on her other side. For a moment, the three of them stood together in silence, backs touching, facing outward in a protective triangle.

The bond between them had solidified. What started as survival was becoming something deeper. Trust. Dependence. And the first undeniable flickers of desire.

Kael’s hand rested on Serena’s waist. Damien’s cool fingers brushed her arm. None of them pulled away.

But the peace was short-lived.

Howls rose from multiple directions. The infected from the library had followed them out. Worse — new hordes were emerging from the dorms and academic buildings, drawn by the noise and the scent of fresh blood.

“We can’t fight the entire campus,” Damien said. “We need to reach the Science Tower. It has underground connections to the Nexus.”

Serena nodded, already scanning for the shortest route. “There’s a service tunnel entrance near the athletic center, but it’s guarded by something big.”

Kael rolled his shoulders, muscles flexing. “Then we go through it. No more hiding.”

As they started moving across the blood-soaked quad, staying low and using shadows, Serena felt the ley lines pulsing stronger beneath their feet.

The Nexus was calling them.

But so was death.

As they approached the athletic center, the ground shook. The massive mutated quarterback — now even larger after feeding on more victims — burst through the wall of the building, roaring with unnatural hunger. Behind him, dozens of infected athletes poured out like a monstrous army.

Kael bared his fangs. “Looks like the final game is on.”
