ELLIOT

It was almost pathetic how the answer rose in me, sharp and instinctual.

Yes.

Yes, I trusted him.

But I wasn’t sure if it was right to tell him that.

Or if it was even right to feel this way toward someone I had only known for months.

“I want to,” I said finally.

My answer didn’t deter him. His mouth firmed. “You should.”

His hand left my cheek and I mourned the loss almost immediately.

He ran a hand through his hair, his frustration evident behind his movements.

“I didn’t ev

ELLIOT“Stop doing that,” Elsa said suddenly.I frowned. “Doing what?”“Stop blaming yourself for everything that's happened. It's not your fault.”“I’m not blaming myself.”“Yes, you are.”I scoffed lightly. “How would you even know? It's not like you can see what I'm thinking.”“You always get this look on your face when you start spiraling internally,” she said. “Your lips do this weird thing.”“My lips do not do a weird thing.”“They absolutely do,” Houston confirmed.Traitor.I rolled my eyes and sank deeper into the couch.Everything fell quiet for a moment. Then Houston spoke softly.“How’s Asher?”The tension in my chest loosened slightly at the mention of him.“He’s okay,” I said quietly. “Or trying to be. He keeps telling me everything is going to be fine.”“And do you believe that?” Elsa asked. The question hung heavily in the air. It was one that I’d never really given much thought to. Maybe it was because I was too busy ignoring everything else.I swallowed.“I don’t know

ELLIOT“I think we should egg his car.”I looked up from where I was sitting cross-legged on Elsa’s couch.“What?”“The car,” Lucas repeated calmly as he bit into a fry. “Your dad’s car. We should egg it. Maybe slash a tire too if we’re feeling creative.”“I don't think that's a good idea,” Houston said immediately from beside him. "That's a crime, isn't it?"Lucas looked offended. “You people never let me express myself. You never take my ideas seriously.”“It’s because your solutions always involve vandalism,” Elsa replied.Lucas shrugged. “Vandalism isn't always a bad idea. I would say it builds character.”I snorted despite myself. The sound surprised even me.It’d been a while since I genuinely laughed. Two weeks to be precise. It's been two weeks since I left the house. It isn't as terrible as I imagined it would be, mostly thanks to Elsa accommodating me.It hasn't been bad staying with her, if you ignored how anal she was about certain things like how certain plates were washe

ASHERSebastian stared at me for a long moment. “Did you leave out of solidarity with Elliot or out of guilt that Simon didn’t kick you out too?”I mulled over that for a second.“A little bit of both, I guess,” I said finally. “I couldn’t stay comfortably in that house while Elliot was squatting somewhere.”He tilted his head. “But it isn’t your fault Elliot has a bad relationship with his father. You leaving home isn’t going to magically fix that.”“I know. But it isn’t just because of that. I also think that Mum and I needed space to figure things out. Things aren’t going to change if I stay. She’ll still think of me as her little kid. She doesn’t want to accept that I’m all grown now.”Sebastian’s expression softened. “And your mum? How did she take you leaving the house? Not well I suppose.”I rubbed my face tiredly. For the first time since leaving home, I finally allowed myself to think about what I’d actually done.I moved out. Just like that.No teary goodbyes with Mum huggin

ASHERSebastian opened the door, took one look at me standing there with my bags, and immediately let out a long sigh.I found it quite insulting. He was acting like something unpleasant just showed up at his doorstep.“Why are you acting like that? I already told you I was coming.”“Well, I didn’t think you were serious,” he said, folding his arms. “Besides, that’s exactly the problem. You told me.”I snorted. “What, did you expect me to beg?”He pursed his lips. “Not really. But a little ‘please’ would have sufficed.”“You’d have to wait a long time because I’m not doing that. That’s not the nature of our relationship.”“Oh, I already know how one-sided our relationship is. You don’t need to tell me.”I rolled my eyes. “Your mum made a mistake when she chose James as your middle name. It should’ve been ‘dramatic’ instead.”“Haha, very funny. You didn’t wait for my answer before coming but I’ll tell you now.” He smiled sweetly. “The answer is no.”I raised an eyebrow. “No?”“No,” he

ASHERShe nodded slowly.I nodded too. Then I hesitated. There was still one more thing that had to be done. I didn’t want to ask her for this and I seriously doubted if it would even work but I had to try.“Would you at least talk to Simon? Try and see if he can allow Elliot back into the house?”She shook her head immediately. “I can’t do that. I told you already. I don’t want to interfere in whatever he has going on with his son.”I did not like her answer. A tiny rush of disappointment filled me.“I was hoping it wouldn’t have to come to this but…” I exhaled sharply. “I’m leaving too.”She looked confused. “What? Leaving where?”“Leaving the house.”“You’re leaving because Elliot is no longer around?”“No, I’m leaving because I don’t feel comfortable staying in this house while Elliot is being punished for something we both did. It feels unfair and I don’t like it.”“What? It’s not unfair—”“It is, Mum, and you know it too.”Her lips trembled slightly. “So you’re leaving me? Is th

ASHERThat finally made her stop. “Of course, I’m aware.”“And? Don’t you find something wrong with that? Don’t you think this is a gross exaggeration of things?”“Look,” she began carefully. “I might not agree with Simon’s decision but… it’s not my place to decide how he wants to handle things with his son.”“Not your place? God, are you even listening to yourself? I never thought you’d be this… uncaring.”Her eyes hardened. “Careful how you speak to me, Asher.”“Don’t you think it’s a little unfair that I get to stay in this house while Elliot is gone?”“I told you. It’s not my place to decide these things.”“So you wouldn’t care if I was gone? If the roles were reversed, would you care? Would you appeal to Simon or would you still leave it up to him to decide?”She exhaled sharply, her irritation shining through. “I don’t… God, Asher would you stop? Just stop… stop trying to make me out to be a villain.”My anger faded a little. “I’m not trying to do anything, mum.”“Yes, you are.
