DIANE pressed her nose to the window. She stared outside as Nicholas drove past the houses and trees. She didn’t want to turn to look at him; she didn’t want to start a conversation. She wanted to be alone. But of course, Nicholas did not get the hint. He had to talk. “Hey, are you okay?” he asked.

Diane grunted.

“Di? Is everything okay?”

She grunted again.

She turned to him. “Can’t you see that I don’t want to talk to you?”

He shrugged. “I want to talk.”

She rolled her eyes and turned back to the window.
