Chapter 1

Author: Tonya Hugh
After a long silence, Henry Young let out a quiet sigh.

“Anya Walt, look at your hands. They’re covered in calluses. Do you really think you can raise a child properly like this?”

“If you’re willing to apologize to Kate Miller, I can take you both back right now. I can give you a good life again.”

I didn’t move. I simply took out my phone and said calmly, “That won’t be necessary, Mr. Young. Just leave me a five-star review.”

Henry fell silent. His fingers tapped slowly against the tabletop.

Then his voice darkened as he said, “Anya, you’ve already lost your sight. What do you gain by insisting on living like this?”

I blinked my unseeing eyes and was about to answer when his phone rang.

Two young children were on the other end.

“Daddy, we miss you! When are you coming home? Mommy has a fever.”

“Yeah! Mommy feels awful today. Her eyes are all red. Come home and stay with us.”

Henry’s voice immediately softened.

“Daddy misses you too.

“Be good and take care of Mommy. I’ll be home soon.”

The call ended. I could sense his hesitation.

“Anya, I…”

I smiled faintly and stepped aside, deliberately making room for him to leave.

“Take care, sir.”

For a long time, neither of us spoke.

Then, finally, I heard him walk away.

When he reached the door, though, his footsteps stopped.

“Anya,” he said quietly, “I remember you weren’t like this before.”

Before?

My fingers brushed the corner of my eye, where the pain seemed to linger.

Back then, I had cried, begged, and caused scenes. I had even tried to use our child to keep him by my side.

Still, he never turned back.

In the end, I lost my child and my sight, and all he gave me was one cold sentence: “You reap what you sow.”

Only when I was certain he had left did I return to the treatment room.

One of my colleagues came over and nudged me.

“You know Mr. Young? That was Henry.”

I shook my head and replied, “Not really.”

Another colleague laughed.

“Not really? He just signed up for an annual package with you. Anya, you won’t have to worry about hitting your targets for the rest of the year.

“Besides, Mr. Young is so handsome. A good man like him is practically impossible to find.

“If I were his ex-wife, I definitely wouldn’t have made such a big deal out of things.”

I almost laughed, but I kept quiet.

That only encouraged them.

“I’m serious. What more could his ex-wife possibly want? The man was willing to spend a billion on her.

“And I heard he’s still single even now. That’s what I call true devotion.”

I was silent for a moment, then finally couldn’t help but speak up, “True devotion?

“Cheating on his wife and fathering twins with another woman is true devotion?

“Spending a billion on a mansion where his mistress lives is true devotion?

“Leaving the wife who stood by him for ten years unable to afford a cheap ice cream is true devotion?”

My colleagues gasped. “How do you know all that?”

I lowered my head with a faint smile before taking an old photograph and handing it to them.

“Do you think my eyes were pretty?”

They looked at the picture and nodded.

“They were. Very beautiful.”

I lifted a finger and pointed to the corner of my eye.

“This was blinded by Henry.

“Do you still think he’s such a good man?”

They fell silent, shocked.

I didn’t say anything else and simply went back to work.

That evening, after my shift ended, I took my white cane and bought a small bundle of treats and toys.

Then I went to the columbarium and lit some candles.

I listened as the flames flickered and came to life.

“My dear child… Are you doing okay over there?”

My fingers rested against the cold niche plaque.

“He came to see me today and mentioned you.

“But it’s a pity he’ll never get to see you for the rest of his life.”

After that day, Henry rarely came home.Occasionally, late at night, he would quietly come in and wrap his arms around me from behind. Then he would suddenly wake up, murmuring our daughter's name.I couldn't explain how I felt about it, so I simply pretended not to know. One weekend, unusually, he didn't go to the office. He cooked at home. When he saw me come out, he carefully reached for my hand.“I made Mexican food, your favorite. Do you want to try some?“Or is there anything else you'd like? I'll make it for you.”I shook my head and refused coldly, “No need.”I felt my way along the table, deliberately going around him. His hand dropped, his voice desolate. “Annie, I just wanted to do something. Can you please not shut me out?”I pressed my lips together.“There's no point.”Henry grabbed me tightly, his chest rising and falling heavily.“There is. As long as it can make you happy, I'll do anything.”I shook my head. I didn't want to keep going around in circles

Henry said nothing as he carried me into the bedroom. His breath brushed against my skin. His voice sounded as though each word had to be forced out.“Annie, we can still have another one.”I curled my lips into an unreadable smile.“Have another one? How exactly? By forcing me?”I could probably imagine how pale his face was at that moment.Henry swayed unsteadily before finally choking out in a low voice, “I never meant to…”After a long silence, he uttered, “Annie, get some rest.”He left, his footsteps almost soundless.Outside, the two children were crying and making a fuss. Then came the sound of a vase shattering.“Daddy! I want Mommy!”“Give Mommy back to me!”“That's right! Is Mommy locked up because of that horrible woman inside?”“Daddy, I hate you! I want Mommy!”Suddenly, there was a loud crash, followed by Henry's furious roar.“Enough! Go back to your rooms.”After a long while, everything finally fell silent. It wasn't until the afternoon that Henry c

Henry was silent for a long time. Finally, he reached out and touched my forehead. His voice was hoarse as he said, “Honey, I’ll make this right.”His hands trembling, he called Kate.“Where are you?”She answered with a laugh, “I’m racing. I’ve won several races.“What? You miss me?”Henry took a deep breath. “Let me ask you, did you pull the doctor from Annie’s care home?“And why did you pretend to be blind? Why did you frame Annie?”There was silence on the other end for a moment before she suddenly laughed.“Oh dear Henry, what are you talking about? I don’t understand. Aren’t we just like buddies? Why would I frame Anya?”“Kate.”His voice dropped. “I’m giving you one more chance. Tell me the truth.”She let out a soft laugh and admitted it.“I was weak back then, and the baby wasn’t strong either, so I had the doctor called back.“Besides, you said she was healthy. It wouldn’t make a difference whether there was a doctor or not.“As for her eyes, I was just afraid

The next morning, Henry began pounding violently on my door.“Open the door, Annie. Open up!“I want to see you. I’m here to take you home.”Gradually, his voice weakened, and the pounding against the door grew fainter.I covered my ears. I blinked blankly, unfocused. In the end, he forced the door open. When he came closer, his footsteps stopped.“Anya, I’m here to take you home. I didn’t mean what I said yesterday.“Let Hal take you home, okay?”Hal.That was what I had called him when I first moved in to live with the Young family at the age of ten.In the end, he hadn’t protected me either. My fingers curled slightly at my sides as I continued to blink blankly.“Home?“So you can send me back to that care home and have me locked up again?“Or back to a home where you can throw me out whenever you want?”I bit my lip until it bled.“You know what? When you drove me away because of Kate, I sat alone in the park downstairs for the entire night.“I thought you would co

I knew he had seen it, and I didn’t stop him.His grip on the table tightened.Henry’s breathing became ragged.“What is this? Tell me.“You were capable of hurting Kate and the others before.“And now, just to keep me from seeing my child, you’re even cruel enough to curse your own daughter?“Anya, you don’t deserve to be the mother of my daughter!”His voice grew increasingly hoarse. By the end of it, he had torn the document apart. He lunged at me and gripped my hand so tightly it nearly broke. Pain shot through me, leaving my hand numb. I wrenched myself free and gave a cold, mocking laugh.“Don’t touch me!”He didn’t listen. He grabbed my shoulders again.“Tell me. Where did you hide my daughter? I’ll find her!“Anya, you’re so vicious. How could someone like you possibly raise my daughter?”Every word cut into me. I screamed with all the strength I had.“She’s dead!”I swung at him with all my strength, but my eyes saw nothing but darkness. In the end, my fingert

I left Joyce’s house and stood on the street. I realized I had nowhere to go. In a fit of spite, I went to a store to buy an ice cream, only to find that I didn’t even have ten dollars in my wallet.I sat in a park not far from home from dusk until dawn. When the baby moved, I silently went back home.Henry immediately grabbed me and looked me over carefully.“Where have you been? I looked for you all night.“You’re acting recklessly, and the child has to suffer with you.”I didn’t look at him. I simply held out my hand.“Your phone.”After hesitating for a moment, he handed it to me. I entered the passcode. My birthday. Wrong. Our wedding anniversary. Still wrong. He pressed his lips together.“0225.”Kate’s birthday. My fingers paused for a moment before I unlocked the phone and transferred five thousand dollars to myself.Henry’s pupils constricted. He handed me a card.“Here. Unlimited credit. Buy whatever you want.“Annie, stop running away from home.”I gripped
