Chapter 1 Their True Thoughts

Penulis: Dottie
I nearly collapsed to the floor as I felt all the strength drain from my body. The cigarette butt had burned my palm until the flesh was raw and bloody.

Mom and Drake stood exactly where they were, neither of them moving an inch. Both wore the same tired expression on their faces.

Only my five-year-old son, Andy, took a step forward and looked down at me expressionlessly.

"Mommy, you can't die from hurting yourself with a cigarette butt. Aunt Elise was right. Watching you constantly threaten to kill yourself is really annoying."

Then, he pointed toward the window and continued, "This is the eighteenth floor. If you really want to die, you might as well just jump from here."

At that moment, my entire body went rigid.

It felt as though a hammer had slammed into my heart so hard that I even forgot to breathe.

Before I could react, Mom hurriedly covered Andy's mouth and said, "What are you saying? Apologize to your mother right now." Then, she lowered her voice and added, "Otherwise, she'll go crazy again and start causing trouble for Elise."

After saying that, she turned toward me and forced an awkward smile. "Layla, Andy is still young. He doesn't know any better. He just repeats whatever he hears. I was the one who said those things, not Elise. If you're really angry, just take it out on me, okay?"

As if suddenly realizing what he had done, Andy hurried over and cautiously tugged at the hem of my clothes.

"I'm sorry, Mommy. I didn't mean it like that."

I stared blankly at the two of them, hearing voices around me. It took several seconds before I could finally make sense of who they belonged to.

The person on the left was my son, and the person on the right was my mother.

Suddenly, I found it almost funny.

My own son had suggested that I kill myself, while my own mother was willing to take all the blame upon herself. All of it, just to protect some homewrecker.

Before the corners of my lips could even lift, I burst into tears.

I couldn't listen anymore.

Staggering, I braced myself against the wall and tried standing up. At that moment, I just wanted to get out of there as quickly as possible.

However, the moment I moved, Drake immediately grabbed my wrist from behind.

Later, I gradually realized that my mood would improve little by little as long as I didn't see them. When I woke up each morning, I no longer felt as though a boulder were pressing down on my chest. At night, I could finally sleep peacefully for several hours at a time.To my surprise, I discovered that once I left those people and everything tied to them behind, there was another way I could live my life.…On the day I left the country, I thanked Dr. Lopez in person. I was genuinely grateful that he had helped me conceal the truth about my actual condition.Although seeing those people did indeed make me emotionally unstable, my condition was nowhere near severe enough to truly require isolation therapy.Dr. Lopez adjusted his glasses and smiled as he said, "I know, but you needed a reason to keep them completely away from you." Then, he paused for a moment before continuing, "You've done incredibly well. This is one of the best recoveries I've ever seen.""Thank you," I th

That afternoon, the isolation plan officially began.Mom immediately burst into tears. "When can I see my daughter? I still need to bring her food."Dr. Lopez shook his head and replied, "That's not necessary. The hospital cafeteria will provide nutritionally balanced meals. During this period, all of you should avoid appearing anywhere within her line of sight.""But I'm her mother." Mom's voice trembled.Dr. Lopez interrupted her and said, "Ma'am, you weren't there when she needed her mother the most. Now, seeing you triggers a trauma response. If you truly want what's best for her, then give her some space."Drake didn't say a word from beginning to end. …In the end, Mom nodded through her tears.Andy stood beside her and asked quietly, "Will Mommy get better?"Once again, no one answered him. That day, I lay in bed listening as their footsteps grew farther and farther away. Finally, I let out a long sigh of relief. The woman in the bed beside mine poked her head over a

The nurse stood beside her hesitantly for a moment before offering her a tissue.Mom refused to take it. She just kept shaking her head, mumbling incoherently, "I didn't know… I didn't know she would become like this."…This went on for an entire six months. My attending physician, Dr. Lopez, held a meeting once a week to discuss my condition. "The problem isn't in her head. It's those people. As long as those people stay away from her, she's already halfway better."And just like that, the idea of isolation therapy was proposed. That day, Drake was hiding in the hallway, secretly watching me. A child ran past and accidentally bumped into him, causing the mask on his face to slip off.My entire body jolted violently as countless images flooded into my mind all at once. My stomach churned, and I practically sprang out of the hospital bed. Grabbing the glass of water on the table, I hurled it at him. "Get out! You're disgusting! You make me sick!"The glass shattered all over

At the very last moment, the blood they had been waiting for finally arrived, and I was fortunate enough to survive. After I was transferred to a hospital room, it was as though I had completely withdrawn into a world of my own.Every day, I simply sat blankly on the bed and stared out the window the entire day. When the nurse came to change my dressing, I held out my hand. When food was brought to me, I ate a few bites.I neither spoke nor looked at anyone.Psychologists came one after another, sitting across from me and asking question after question, but I refused to say a word.Only when I saw those people did I react. The day Drake pushed open the door, I was hooked up to an IV."Layla, I bought you some strawberries. You used to love them. I've already washed them, so I'll leave them here. You—""Get out!" I exploded almost instantly. "Just get out!"Acting purely on instinct, I grabbed everything within reach and hurled it at him.Drake jumped in fright and raised bot

Seeing her reaction, the doctor sighed and softened his tone."Based on our preliminary examination and questioning, the patient suffers from severe post-traumatic stress disorder accompanied by a major depressive episode. Conditions like this are often triggered by intense emotional trauma. "For example, prolonged psychological abuse, repeated betrayal, or sudden traumatic events. Things such as catching a cheating partner or being subjected to unexpected violence can cause severe disruption to the nervous system. Judging from her medication history and dosage, this condition has persisted for at least three years."Three years? At that moment, Mom suddenly whipped her head around and glared fiercely at Drake. "It was you! This is all because of you!"Beside herself, she lunged at him and slapped him again and again."If you hadn't cheated on Layla, how could she have become like this? You did this to her! Are you happy now?"Drake remained on the floor without moving. His hea

It was a critical condition notice, and Layla's name was written clearly across it.Drake refused to take it. He even knocked the paper aside as he screamed, "Impossible!" He abruptly looked up, his eyes bloodshot, and practically threw himself toward the doors of the emergency room."Layla, I know you bribed the doctor to scare me on purpose, right? Stop messing around! Stop scaring me, Layla. It was just a small cut on your head. How could it be this serious? How could this be?"He seemed completely lost in his own world, muttering to himself as tears fell one after another onto the floor. The doctor grabbed him with a grim expression and said, "The patient has been taking psychiatric medication for a prolonged period, which has caused a severe clotting disorder. We simply can't stop the bleeding from her wound. Her condition is extremely dangerous. Sign the critical condition notice; otherwise…"At those words, Drake seemed to be rooted to the spot. The next second, his knees
