Chapter 4 They Begged Me to Save Her

Author: Dottie
Not long after they left, I fished my phone out from among the broken glass scattered across the floor and called an ambulance.

By the time I was wheeled into the emergency room alone due to excessive blood loss, I happened to pass Elise, who was surrounded by everyone.

Drake carried her straight toward the doctor, heedless of everything around him. "Doctor, please save her! She got upset and slit her wrists! She needs a blood transfusion immediately!"

The doctor anxiously shoved him aside and said, "Move! My patient is seriously injured too! Can't you see that?"

Drake stumbled backward from the force of the shove and instinctively looked in the direction the doctor was heading. The instant he saw me, his entire body visibly froze.

Mom reacted before he did. The moment she saw me, she rushed toward me and slapped me across the face.

"Layla! How dare you leak Elise's nude photos just to get revenge on her? How did I ever give birth to someone as vicious as you? If something really happens to Elise, do you expect me to spend the rest of my life living with the guilt of knowing my own daughter destroyed someone else's life?"

The slap knocked my head to one side, but my expression remained numb and empty.

I didn't react at all.

Seeing me remain completely motionless, Mom finally broke down. By the end, her voice was almost choked with sobs.

"Elise has an extremely rare blood type. Right now, you're the only person in the entire city whose blood type is compatible with hers. I'm begging you as your mother. Please give her your blood."

The doctor beside us immediately interrupted in a grave voice, "Absolutely not! In her current condition, she cannot donate blood. She has a severe clotting disorder. She herself is already—"

A heavy thud cut him off.

Drake's knees slammed against the floor.

"Layla, please save Elise." He raised his head and looked at me. In his eyes was a humility I had never seen before. "If you help her this once, I swear I'll make things between us the way they used to be."

I stared at him blankly. Suddenly, my entire world seemed to move in slow motion.

I watched my mother, who had always carried herself with dignity, cover her mouth as she sobbed uncontrollably before dropping to her knees in front of me. Then, I watched Andy get pulled down onto his knees right after her, desperately clutching my sleeve and begging at the top of his lungs.

They seemed to be crying and shouting something, but I couldn't hear them anymore.

When it came down to choosing between two people, the three people who had once been closest to me in this world were now joining forces to force me toward death.

A tear slipped from the corner of my eye. And finally, I heard myself say, "Okay."

…

Almost the moment the two stretchers were wheeled into the emergency room at the same time, Drake collapsed weakly to the floor.

He had never been this panicked before. At that moment, the thought of the wound on Layla's head made his heart tighten.

For the first time, fear crept into his heart.

Seeing him like this, Mom and Andy couldn't help but move closer, looking worried as well.

Mom frowned and murmured as though trying to convince herself, "Layla's wound only looked frightening. She should be okay, right?"

Andy lowered his head and twisted his fingers together, his voice muffled as he said, "If Mommy really saves Aunt Elise, I'm going to apologize to her as soon as she comes out."

Drake said nothing. There was only one thought left in his mind.

Before the emergency blood supply arrived, Layla had to be okay. Nothing could happen to her.

He silently vowed that if Layla came through this safely, he would keep his word. From now on, he would keep his distance from Elise, and he and Layla would go back to the way they used to be.

His thoughts unconsciously drifted further away. Suddenly, he remembered how Layla had asked several times before if they could go to the amusement park. But every single time, he had dismissed the idea as childish and flatly refused.

This time, he decided that the three of them had to go together once she came out.

Just then, the doors to the emergency room opened.

A doctor walked out, holding a sheet of paper and a pen.

He held them out to Drake.

The instant Drake saw what was written on that piece of paper, his entire body went rigid. His vision went black, and it was as though every sound in the world had suddenly disappeared.

Later, I gradually realized that my mood would improve little by little as long as I didn't see them. When I woke up each morning, I no longer felt as though a boulder were pressing down on my chest. At night, I could finally sleep peacefully for several hours at a time.To my surprise, I discovered that once I left those people and everything tied to them behind, there was another way I could live my life.…On the day I left the country, I thanked Dr. Lopez in person. I was genuinely grateful that he had helped me conceal the truth about my actual condition.Although seeing those people did indeed make me emotionally unstable, my condition was nowhere near severe enough to truly require isolation therapy.Dr. Lopez adjusted his glasses and smiled as he said, "I know, but you needed a reason to keep them completely away from you." Then, he paused for a moment before continuing, "You've done incredibly well. This is one of the best recoveries I've ever seen.""Thank you," I th

That afternoon, the isolation plan officially began.Mom immediately burst into tears. "When can I see my daughter? I still need to bring her food."Dr. Lopez shook his head and replied, "That's not necessary. The hospital cafeteria will provide nutritionally balanced meals. During this period, all of you should avoid appearing anywhere within her line of sight.""But I'm her mother." Mom's voice trembled.Dr. Lopez interrupted her and said, "Ma'am, you weren't there when she needed her mother the most. Now, seeing you triggers a trauma response. If you truly want what's best for her, then give her some space."Drake didn't say a word from beginning to end. …In the end, Mom nodded through her tears.Andy stood beside her and asked quietly, "Will Mommy get better?"Once again, no one answered him. That day, I lay in bed listening as their footsteps grew farther and farther away. Finally, I let out a long sigh of relief. The woman in the bed beside mine poked her head over a

The nurse stood beside her hesitantly for a moment before offering her a tissue.Mom refused to take it. She just kept shaking her head, mumbling incoherently, "I didn't know… I didn't know she would become like this."…This went on for an entire six months. My attending physician, Dr. Lopez, held a meeting once a week to discuss my condition. "The problem isn't in her head. It's those people. As long as those people stay away from her, she's already halfway better."And just like that, the idea of isolation therapy was proposed. That day, Drake was hiding in the hallway, secretly watching me. A child ran past and accidentally bumped into him, causing the mask on his face to slip off.My entire body jolted violently as countless images flooded into my mind all at once. My stomach churned, and I practically sprang out of the hospital bed. Grabbing the glass of water on the table, I hurled it at him. "Get out! You're disgusting! You make me sick!"The glass shattered all over

At the very last moment, the blood they had been waiting for finally arrived, and I was fortunate enough to survive. After I was transferred to a hospital room, it was as though I had completely withdrawn into a world of my own.Every day, I simply sat blankly on the bed and stared out the window the entire day. When the nurse came to change my dressing, I held out my hand. When food was brought to me, I ate a few bites.I neither spoke nor looked at anyone.Psychologists came one after another, sitting across from me and asking question after question, but I refused to say a word.Only when I saw those people did I react. The day Drake pushed open the door, I was hooked up to an IV."Layla, I bought you some strawberries. You used to love them. I've already washed them, so I'll leave them here. You—""Get out!" I exploded almost instantly. Seeing her reaction, the doctor sighed and softened his tone."Based on our preliminary examination and questioning, the patient suffers from severe post-traumatic stress disorder accompanied by a major depressive episode. Conditions like this are often triggered by intense emotional trauma. "For example, prolonged psychological abuse, repeated betrayal, or sudden traumatic events. Things such as catching a cheating partner or being subjected to unexpected violence can cause severe disruption to the nervous system. Judging from her medication history and dosage, this condition has persisted for at least three years."Three years? At that moment, Mom suddenly whipped her head around and glared fiercely at Drake. "It was you! This is all because of you!"Beside herself, she lunged at him and slapped him again and again."If you hadn't cheated on Layla, how could she have become like this? You did this to her! Are you happy now?"Drake remained on the floor without moving. His hea

It was a critical condition notice, and Layla's name was written clearly across it.Drake refused to take it. He even knocked the paper aside as he screamed, "Impossible!" He abruptly looked up, his eyes bloodshot, and practically threw himself toward the doors of the emergency room."Layla, I know you bribed the doctor to scare me on purpose, right? Stop messing around! Stop scaring me, Layla. It was just a small cut on your head. How could it be this serious? How could this be?"He seemed completely lost in his own world, muttering to himself as tears fell one after another onto the floor. The doctor grabbed him with a grim expression and said, "The patient has been taking psychiatric medication for a prolonged period, which has caused a severe clotting disorder. We simply can't stop the bleeding from her wound. Her condition is extremely dangerous. Sign the critical condition notice; otherwise…"At those words, Drake seemed to be rooted to the spot. The next second, his knees
