Chapter 3 I'll Leave

Author: Dottie
He grabbed me by the throat and slammed me against the sink, his eyes bloodshot as he roared, "Layla! What are you trying to do to Elise this time? I already told you that as long as you leave her alone, I'll go along with whatever you want me to do! Why do you still have to bother her?"

My head struck the wall hard, causing my vision to go black, and blood began running down the side of my face.

…

By the time I came back to my senses and saw Drake standing there with his chest heaving, looking both terrified and furious, a bitter ache rose in my heart.

How long had it been since I'd seen Drake like this? I couldn't remember. The last time I'd seen him lose control like this seemed to have been when I suffered massive blood loss, and my heart briefly stopped beating.

That day, Drake, always calm and composed, knelt on the floor, looking utterly disheveled. He begged the doctors to save my life, slamming his head against the floor until his forehead bled.

Just like I was bleeding now.

As blood trickled down from my temple, Drake abruptly drew his hand back and looked somewhat lost.

"Are you okay?"

I quietly looked into his eyes and saw my own utterly desolate reflection staring back at me.

Then, I opened my mouth and said, "Drake, let's get a div–"

Before I could finish, his special ringtone interrupted me.

He had been about to check my wound, but his hand suddenly stopped. Without a second thought, he turned and answered the call instead.

At that moment, Elise's tearful voice came through the receiver.

Drake's expression instantly darkened. When he looked at me again, his eyes were overflowing with disgust and warning. "Layla, I'm only going to say this one last time. You can do whatever you want to me, but if you ever lay a hand on Elise again, I swear I'll take you down with me!"

The door slammed shut so quickly that I never got the chance to finish the rest of my sentence.

I wanted to tell him that we would be getting a divorce. I would set them free, as well as myself.

Just as I was lost in thought, there was a sudden crash. Then, a cup shattered against my head without warning.

After a burst of dull pain, the entire world began spinning. I staggered and fell to the floor.

Andy stood in the doorway, his face filled with the exact same anger Drake had shown.

"Mommy, you're a big liar! You keep saying you want to die, but you never actually do it! Aunt Elise is crying because of you!"

I remained frozen for a long moment before finally forcing myself upright again. Then, I looked into his eyes and said, word by word, "Andy, Aunt Elise won't ever have to cry again. Because tomorrow, I'm going to divorce your father. From now on, I won't be your mommy anymore."

When Andy heard my words, he fell silent.

When his gaze fell on the wound on my head, where blood was still seeping out, his hand clenched slightly.

Two seconds later, I heard footsteps approaching.

He slowly walked toward me and crouched down. Then, he gently covered the bleeding wound on my head with his hand.

Back when I accidentally cut my finger while cooking, he would come over like this too, gently blowing on the cut for me.

Thinking of this, my nose stung. Just as I was about to speak, he suddenly pressed down on my wound.

In that split second, agonizing pain exploded through my head. My entire body jerked, and tears instantly flooded my eyes.

After that, he pulled his hand away and lowered his head to look at the blood covering his palm.

Then, to my disbelief, he grinned.

He turned around and ran outside, his voice bursting with excitement. "Grandma! Hurry and tell Aunt Elise not to cry anymore! I got back at Mommy for her! I made Mommy bleed so much! Look at my hand if you don't believe me!"

Mom's voice immediately came from outside. "Oh, your little hand is filthy! Hurry up and wash it. Elise faints at the sight of blood. Don't scare her like that again."

Their footsteps quickly faded into the distance.

Finally, there was nothing left but the muffled thud of a door closing.

From beginning to end, not a single person came back to look at me. I stared blankly in the direction their voices had disappeared.

Unexpectedly, I felt calm.

Later, I gradually realized that my mood would improve little by little as long as I didn't see them. When I woke up each morning, I no longer felt as though a boulder were pressing down on my chest. At night, I could finally sleep peacefully for several hours at a time.To my surprise, I discovered that once I left those people and everything tied to them behind, there was another way I could live my life.…On the day I left the country, I thanked Dr. Lopez in person. I was genuinely grateful that he had helped me conceal the truth about my actual condition.Although seeing those people did indeed make me emotionally unstable, my condition was nowhere near severe enough to truly require isolation therapy.Dr. Lopez adjusted his glasses and smiled as he said, "I know, but you needed a reason to keep them completely away from you." Then, he paused for a moment before continuing, "You've done incredibly well. This is one of the best recoveries I've ever seen.""Thank you," I th

That afternoon, the isolation plan officially began.Mom immediately burst into tears. "When can I see my daughter? I still need to bring her food."Dr. Lopez shook his head and replied, "That's not necessary. The hospital cafeteria will provide nutritionally balanced meals. During this period, all of you should avoid appearing anywhere within her line of sight.""But I'm her mother." Mom's voice trembled.Dr. Lopez interrupted her and said, "Ma'am, you weren't there when she needed her mother the most. Now, seeing you triggers a trauma response. If you truly want what's best for her, then give her some space."Drake didn't say a word from beginning to end. …In the end, Mom nodded through her tears.Andy stood beside her and asked quietly, "Will Mommy get better?"Once again, no one answered him. That day, I lay in bed listening as their footsteps grew farther and farther away. Finally, I let out a long sigh of relief. The woman in the bed beside mine poked her head over a

The nurse stood beside her hesitantly for a moment before offering her a tissue.Mom refused to take it. She just kept shaking her head, mumbling incoherently, "I didn't know… I didn't know she would become like this."…This went on for an entire six months. My attending physician, Dr. Lopez, held a meeting once a week to discuss my condition. "The problem isn't in her head. It's those people. As long as those people stay away from her, she's already halfway better."And just like that, the idea of isolation therapy was proposed. That day, Drake was hiding in the hallway, secretly watching me. A child ran past and accidentally bumped into him, causing the mask on his face to slip off.My entire body jolted violently as countless images flooded into my mind all at once. My stomach churned, and I practically sprang out of the hospital bed. Grabbing the glass of water on the table, I hurled it at him. "Get out! You're disgusting! You make me sick!"The glass shattered all over

At the very last moment, the blood they had been waiting for finally arrived, and I was fortunate enough to survive. After I was transferred to a hospital room, it was as though I had completely withdrawn into a world of my own.Every day, I simply sat blankly on the bed and stared out the window the entire day. When the nurse came to change my dressing, I held out my hand. When food was brought to me, I ate a few bites.I neither spoke nor looked at anyone.Psychologists came one after another, sitting across from me and asking question after question, but I refused to say a word.Only when I saw those people did I react. The day Drake pushed open the door, I was hooked up to an IV."Layla, I bought you some strawberries. You used to love them. I've already washed them, so I'll leave them here. You—""Get out!" I exploded almost instantly. Seeing her reaction, the doctor sighed and softened his tone."Based on our preliminary examination and questioning, the patient suffers from severe post-traumatic stress disorder accompanied by a major depressive episode. Conditions like this are often triggered by intense emotional trauma. "For example, prolonged psychological abuse, repeated betrayal, or sudden traumatic events. Things such as catching a cheating partner or being subjected to unexpected violence can cause severe disruption to the nervous system. Judging from her medication history and dosage, this condition has persisted for at least three years."Three years? At that moment, Mom suddenly whipped her head around and glared fiercely at Drake. "It was you! This is all because of you!"Beside herself, she lunged at him and slapped him again and again."If you hadn't cheated on Layla, how could she have become like this? You did this to her! Are you happy now?"Drake remained on the floor without moving. His hea

It was a critical condition notice, and Layla's name was written clearly across it.Drake refused to take it. He even knocked the paper aside as he screamed, "Impossible!" He abruptly looked up, his eyes bloodshot, and practically threw himself toward the doors of the emergency room."Layla, I know you bribed the doctor to scare me on purpose, right? Stop messing around! Stop scaring me, Layla. It was just a small cut on your head. How could it be this serious? How could this be?"He seemed completely lost in his own world, muttering to himself as tears fell one after another onto the floor. The doctor grabbed him with a grim expression and said, "The patient has been taking psychiatric medication for a prolonged period, which has caused a severe clotting disorder. We simply can't stop the bleeding from her wound. Her condition is extremely dangerous. Sign the critical condition notice; otherwise…"At those words, Drake seemed to be rooted to the spot. The next second, his knees
