Damon's POV.

I stalked toward where the stone that hit me came from. It was one of the places where I and my people had strategically placed a man-made cave to blend with the rest of our environments.

Even though I didn't turn back to look at the guards with me, I could hear their footsteps as they followed after me. A part of me wanted to turn around and not walk to the cave, thinking that it might be some kind of plot from whoever the intruder was just to distract my mind. If that were the case, I realized that I might be giving away one of our sheltered locations to the person.

But what if it was not a hoax? Another voice battled within me. What if it was not a ploy to distract me and I walked away? That meant that I just lost the opportunity to get whoever the spy was. That was one chance that I was not willing to risk no matter how tiny the chance was.
