Chapter 96: Racing Against Time

Third Person POV

"Okay, I will come with you," Deborah quietly replied, her voice barely audible above the ambient sounds of the library around them. The words felt like lead in her mouth, heavy and bitter, but she knew she had little or no choice when it came to Liam's safety. The threat Caleb had just made hung in the air between them like a sword suspended by a thread, and she couldn't risk calling his bluff when Liam's life was potentially at stake.

Caleb smiled slightly at her surrender, the expression cold and satisfied like that of a predator who had successfully cornered its prey. The smile didn't reach his eyes, which remained as calculating and dangerous as they had been throughout their entire confrontation. He let go of her shoulder, his fingers releasing their grip with deliberate slowness, as if he wanted her to remember the feel of his hand on her body as a reminder of his physical dominance.

Then he turned around, his movements casual and confident, knowing she wou

Deborah's POV Tears were streaming freely down my face now, hot trails of salt water that burned against my skin as they fell. I could taste them at the corners of my mouth, bitter and metallic like blood or fear or both mixed together. My vision blurred with the moisture, making the harsh light from the overhead bulb seem to shimmer and dance in front of me like something underwater. But even through the tears, even through the terror that was making my entire body shake with tremors I couldn't control, I remained alert and waiting for any opportunity to fight back. I wasn't going to just sit here passively and let whatever was about to happen simply unfold without resistance. That wasn't who I was, and it wasn't who Liam had helped me become over these past months. When Caleb's fingers moved closer to my face, trailing from my hair toward my mouth with that same deceptive gentleness that made my skin crawl, I saw my chance. Without allowing myself time to think about the consequenc

Third Person POV"What deal?" Caleb asked, his voice taking on a sharper edge of curiosity as he stopped his restless pacing and focused entirely on Deborah's words. Deborah shifted slightly in her chair, the ropes around her wrists cutting deeper into her skin with the movement. The bare bulb overhead cast harsh shadows across her face as she looked up at him, trying to gauge his mood and find the safest way to answer his question. The concrete floor beneath her feet felt colder now, as if the temperature in the room had dropped several degrees."Liam was supposed to help me get your attention while I helped him trace some money in his account in return," she said, her voice steady despite the fear that was making her heart race. The words came out clearly, each syllable carefully articulated as she tried to maintain some sense of control over the conversation. As soon as the explanation left her lips, Deborah watched Caleb's expression change in a way that made her stomach drop. In what seemed to be a basement, Deborah was seated in a chair with her hands tied on either side to the wooden armrests, the rough rope burning against her wrists as she tested the bonds that held her captive. The fibers scratched against her skin every time she moved, leaving red marks that stung with each subtle shift of position. She had no way of wriggling herself loose - Caleb, who had tied these knots had done so with expertise and deliberate care to ensure she remained exactly where they wanted her.The air in the basement was thick and stale, carrying the musty smell of dampness and concrete that seemed to cling to everything around her. A single bare bulb hung from the ceiling above, casting harsh shadows that danced across the gray walls as it swayed slightly from some unseen air current. The light was bright enough to illuminate her immediate surroundings but left the corners of the room shrouded in darkness that seemed to press in on her from all sides. The concrete floor

Liam's POV"Caleb?" I asked, my voice cracking with surprise as the name hit me like a physical blow. The word seemed to echo in the space between the bookshelves, bouncing off the walls and coming back to me distorted and strange. My mind struggled to process what Olivia had just told me, trying to make sense of why my teammate and supposed friend would be with Deborah at a time like this."Why would Caleb be with Deborah?" I asked again, the question directed more to myself than to Olivia and her group, who were standing there watching me with expressions that ranged from confusion to mild curiosity. My voice sounded hollow and distant even to my own ears, as if it were coming from someone else entirely.Students at nearby tables continued their quiet conversations and study sessions as I stood there trying to make sense of this new information. Then, like pieces of a puzzle suddenly clicking into place, memories began flooding back to me with startling clarity. Each recollection fe

Liam's POV With the same speed as I had run out of my room, I dashed into the library with my phone still held to my ear, the device pressed so tightly against my head that it was starting to make my ear ache. My heart hammered against my ribs like a caged animal trying to break free, each beat so powerful I could feel it pulsing in my throat and temples. The familiar smell of old books and cleaning supplies hit me as I burst through the glass entrance doors, but I barely registered it through the fog of panic that had consumed my thoughts."Please, pick up the phone," I pleaded desperately into the device, my voice cracking with emotion as I spoke to the empty air around me. I could hear her phone ringing through my speaker, that familiar tone that I had heard countless times before when we would call each other to make plans. But now that innocent sound felt like a countdown to disaster, each ring marking another second that passed without knowing if she was safe. The fluorescent l
