Chapter 2 - Celia

I made it home, changed into clothes for school and was in the kitchen when Dad opened the side door. "Hey Dad."

"Good morning my Celly Bug."

I put his plate of eggs, sausage and toast on the table. I started pouring coffee for my Dad as he walked into the kitchen.

"Thanks Bug! You take such good care of me." He said as he took the mug and sipped his coffee. I poured myself a glass of orange juice and mixed in some cranberry juice, it was my favorite drink.

I sat down at the table, and waited for Dad to start eating before I spoke. "Dad, I need to tell you that I went out running this morning in the forest. I took the trail to the lake and while I was at the lake, a man jumped in the lake. I took off running and got about 2 miles from the lake, when I ran into two warriors. I told them about the guy at the lake and they told me to head home while they went to the lake to try to get the man." I said it fast, hoping it would be less painful.

Dad grimaced, took a bite of his sausage and chewed slowly. I waited.

"How often do you run to the lake?"

"Every morning."

My Dad raised his eyebrow. "Every morning....well you must be fast to make it there and back and still cook me breakfast every morning."

"Uhm, I guess I am fast. I enjoy running and swimming."

"Swimming?" My Dad's tone shifted to a more serious tone. "What do you mean swimming?"

"I run to the lake, it's about five miles then I swim 50 laps and then run five miles home. It's peaceful at the lake."

Dad took a deep breath and pinched the bridge of his nose. He grunted, "Celly Bug...you shouldn't be doing that alone."

"I've been doing it for over 3 years. No one has ever seen me at the lake or on my run. It's not near the border and it calms me. Plus, I get a nice workout before school." My voice trailed off as I met my Dad's fierce gaze.

"Celia, I know I don't usually bring work home so you don't know, but the pack is having some issues. In the last few months, we have had several humans breech our borders and make it quite far. I want you to promise me you won't go to the lake alone until I give you permission." I wanted to protest, but the look on Dad's face was resolute and he didn't call me Celly Bug. I knew I wouldn't win. "Have a friend or two go with you. Get some group exercise." He added.

As if it were that easy, I didn't really have a lot of friends. I have a grand total of two friends; Ang and Jax. Ang is a spitfire. She has a million questions and no filter. She is smart enough that she skipped a grade and will graduate at 17. Jax is a massive guy, thanks to having his wolf. Ang does not do exertion, so there is no way she will run to the lake. Jax is a warrior now, his wolf appeared 3 months ago, so he has training and patrols. He doesn't have time to run to the lake with me. Besides, going to the lake and swimming is my solo thing. Its peaceful and quiet. I don't think going with someone would feel the same.

Unlike most pack members, I am not outgoing. I like quiet time, solitary places and books. Not exactly the kinds of things most rambunctious teens are into and definitely not what teen wolves are into. "I promise I won't go alone." I said and meant I won't go at all. Dad smiled at me and said, "Thank you Celly Bug. We can't risk losing you. We don't know what these humans want or if they are dangerous, so please be careful until I say otherwise."

I returned my Dad's smile and answered, "I'll be extra careful just for you Dad. Don't worry about me."

I finished my breakfast, grabbed my bookbag and headed for the door. "Bye Dad. See you after school." Dad waved and said, "Remember tonight we eat at the packhouse with your Mom, Rog and Kyle." His eyes lit up as he mentioned Mom. I smiled and said, "I know it's Wednesday. I'll be home and ready to go."

I was quiet. I didn't know if I should say anything. My wolf was loud though. She kept saying he wasn't telling the whole truth. He was leaving out parts of the story. 'He said he wasn't telling parts that weren't his.' I reminded my wolf. She seemed to think for a moment.'You can leave. You can refuse Carson. You can be like Emilia.' My wolf said happily. 'I don't want to do that to Carson. He's a good man. He deserves to be happy. I deserve to be happy.''We won't make him happy. It will always be a struggle. You won't get to leave if you don't refuse him. He will never let you go.'Uncle Leo cleared his throat. "My dear, what is your wolf saying to you?" I frowned. "I don't want to tell you, because I think it will make you sad.""Should I guess?" He asked.I bit my lip. 'Don't tell him. He will stop us. He will put you under guard.' My wolf said.'Could you please shut up?' I asked her. 'I'm tired of your opinions.'"No, I won't make you guess. But I want you to know, my wolf

Celia seemed happy. She hummed as we sat down for breakfast. She didn't really eat. "My dear, are you not hungry?""I don't normally eat much for breakfast. I usually just drink juice and then grab a protein bar and eat it mid-morning." "Ah. Well then, let's get started." I said pushing my plate away. "No, finish your breakfast. I used to cook breakfast for my Dad and then sit with him while he ate. It's kind of nice to be here with you. It's like a morning with my Dad." She said and smiled. She continued humming. I pulled my plate back. "What are you humming?" "A song Carson and I danced to last night, I sang it softly as we danced. He said 'Imagine we are in our suite, I moved all the furniture to give us a dance floor. It's just you and me. I'll make the world go away for you.' He really is a good man. He seems to always know exactly what I need, even when I don't know myself." I smiled. 'You may be wrong. Emilia never told anyone you were a good man. She never voiced that wha

I waited for Uncle Leo. I was feeling hopeful but nervous. Carson hadn't told me anything about what he and Leo spoke about. 'Because they are going to hide things from you.' My wolf said. 'Why do you think that?' I asked.'They won't want to scare you. They want you to stay and accept Carson.'I rolled my eyes. 'Could you say anything more obvious?' She was quiet. I heard a knock and ran to open the door. Uncle Leo smiled. I threw my arms around him and hugged him. "Thank you so much." "Let's go up to the Beta floor for breakfast." We walked up the stairs and he opened the first door on the right. It was light and airy. The living room had a white loveseat and a matching fainting couch that would be perfect as a reading spot. The deep blue carpet looked plush, like it would feel nice to walk on barefoot. "Wow! You're suite is different than I imagined. I had pictured dark wood, leather furniture, not so bright." He smiled, "This isn't my suite. We are having breakfast here in

Beta Leo's story was sad. I understood why he didn't talk about his past. I'd wondered why he was unmated but never thought it was because his mate had left him. It scared me to think Celly might leave me. She seemed so happy recently. As I left this morning she kissed me and thanked me again for agreeing to train her. I went back to our suite. I wanted to check on Celly and reassure myself that we were okay. Celly had music playing, she was in her closet. I stood in the doorway watching her dance to the music as she looked for something to wear. "You're gorgeous!" I said and smiled. Celly walked towards me, she was only wearing her bra and panties. She wrapped her arms around me and pulled her body tight against mine. Celly kissed me and said, "I hope your meeting with Uncle Leo went well." "It did." I wrapped my arms around her and held her tight. "He is going to talk to you today. I think what he is offering will be good. He wants to help us." Celly smiled and said, "I'm sure i

I paused, remembering how hard it had been. Those days when Emilia wouldn't even come to the door. When Ivar would apologize for her and beg me not to give up on her. I never considered giving up, I loved her too much. "We spent three months like that, me going to her house, her refusing to see me, Ivar telling me she wasn't doing well. Then she stepped outside. She didn't give me a chance to speak. She said, 'Leo, I'm not going to ever be able to accept you as a mate. You need to reject me. You deserve so much better than a used shell of your beloved. Please, set yourself free. Reject me. I will accept and leave Moonless Night.' She stood there, waiting. I was shocked, horrified that she wanted me to reject her."I took a deep breath. "I refused. I said to her 'Emilia, I love you. I need you in my life. I can never reject you. Please, I beg you, look at me. You know our bond is strong, we can survive anything together. I will do anything for you, my love.' She touched my cheek and s

I didn't sleep last night. I paced. I tried to work out how to tell Carson about losing my Emilia without scaring him. Maisie is right, Carson is not me and Celia is not Emilia. The situations are different but similar enough to concern me.It's just before five. Carson should be here any minute. I asked him to meet me on the Beta floor. We will have privacy. I continued to pace. I stopped drinking a few hours ago. I'm sober, but Goddess, I want a drink. Carson knocked. I opened the door. "Beta Leo." He said as he bowed."Carson. Thank you for coming to see me." "You said it would help Celly. I'll do anything to help her." I frowned, I had said the same thing about Emilia and just like Carson I meant it. "Let's sit down." We moved into the living room and sat across from each other."I want to tell you why I don't have a mate. This is going to be difficult for me. I haven't spoken to anyone about my fated mate in years, so please bear with me."Carson nodded and leaned forward."I

I rang the bell at Celly's house. I couldn't stop smiling. Eckley was laughing in my head, 'You look like the cat that ate the canary with that stupid grin on your face.' He chuckled. 'Sorry Eck, I'm excited to be going on a date with Celly. I can't help but smile.' I rang the bell again. I didn't

I had been running for awhile. When I first started my run, I hit the trail I normally take. I had promised not to go to the lake alone. As I reached the fork, I took the left trail, it runs along a gorgeous vista above the valley. I was keeping my promise to not go to the lake, but running in town

I left Celly Bug in the kitchen. She needed time to think. Although it was Saturday, I planned to go to my office. I needed to do some more work in figuring out these incursions to our packlands. So far, it was only a few humans, but they had gotten farther than they should. We had caught nearly a

I started cooking breakfast for my Dad. I was trying to stay busy and avoid looking at him. Carson had left. I could feel my Dad's eyes following me. Eventually, I ran out of things to do. I poured my Dad a cup of coffee and handed it to him. "Celly Bug, look at me." Dad said. I looked up and met
