I started walking towards the high school. I had plenty of time. I was kind of lost in my own thoughts. Mostly, I was thinking about my family. My Mom, Clara, lives at the packhouse. She is an assistant to our Luna Mazie and holds a Delta rank. Mom likes to stay close in case the Luna needs her. Dad would be welcome to live with her as the head Epsilon, but he likes to be home with me. My younger brothers live with Mom. As a teenage girl, I am the only one that would not be allowed to live in the packhouse.

At 15, girls become unranked. Before that we are considered the rank of our parents, so I have been unranked for 2 years, 11 months and 13 days. I turn 18 in two short weeks. I don't expect to find that I have a wolf when I turn 18. I just kind of think that if I had a wolf, I would feel it. Besides, I have a plan and having a wolf isn't in the plan.

I plan to finish school in two months and leave the pack. Technically, I can go to college and the pack will pay for my schooling and housing if I am unmated. The trade off is that females return to the pack lands each quarter for the Mates Dinner. It's basically a big party for all the unmated pack members to mingle and hopefully meet their fated mate. In our pack this is a huge deal for females to return since it is a second chance to find our wolf. I don't know that I want to return once I leave. Again, I don't think I have a wolf. But college is expensive and having the pack pay would be pretty nice, maybe the trade off would be worth it.

If I do have a wolf, my plan is moot. I will be expected to mate and breed. A she-wolf's greatest contribution to the pack is making little wolves to strengthen the pack. Moonless Night is a medium sized pack. There are around 1,200 members. I have never really seen myself as a mate and mother. If I have a wolf, I will be introduced to every unmated male in our pack at the earliest opportunity.

This is in the hope that my fated mate is a member of our pack. Moonless Night females rarely leave the pack if they have a wolf. A male wolf can reject a fated mate, but a she-wolf can not initiate a rejection. The last rejection in our pack happened so long ago that it's like a legend.

The sounds of cars and teenagers talking around me got louder. I was close to school now. I hunched my shoulders trying to disappear as I headed up the stairs and into the building.

Standing at my locker, I opened it and began prepping what I needed for my morning classes: Physics, Geometry, History and English. Once I had my morning stuff in my bag, I locked my locker and turned towards the stairs only to bump into something solid. "Sorry, sorry, sorry. I didn't...." I started to apologize but stopped speaking when I looked up to see it was Carson. Twice in one morning! What are the odds?

"Hi Celia. I couldn't wait until English. I am assuming these are yours." He said as he handed me my shorts and socks, neatly folded.

"Uhm, yeah. Thanks." I said, shoving them into my bag. "Sorry for crashing into you twice today."

Carson smiled. "I don't mind. Feel free to crash into me anytime." He winked and started walking away.

"WTF!!! Celia, what was that? How do you know Carson? And what did he mean 'crash into me anytime'? Did he wink at you?"

I sighed heavily. "Morning Ang. I don't know. He is in my English class. I ran into him while running this morning and then again now. I am going to have bruises from it. And yes he winked at me, but I don't know why."

Ang hooked her arm through mine and we both headed for the stairs. This was going to be a long morning. I hoped she would drop it, but I knew she wouldn't. We have 2 classes together in the morning and more in the afternoon. "I need details!" Ang said excitedly.

"Can we just drop it and forget it happened?" I said rolling my eyes.

"Hell no! That man is hot with a capital h! And he is winking at you and flirting. 'Crash into me anytime', she imitated Carson's husky voice. " I think he likes you." Ang giggled.

"No. If anything he was worried that I was scared this morning when I crashed into him and he reports to my Dad, so he is probably just worried about his job." I tried to brush it off.

"So you were far enough from town that you crashed into him while he was on patrol? What were you scared of? What happened? Oh! Better question! Did he shift in front of you? I definitely wouldn't mind getting an eye full of his hot bod as he shifted." Ang smiled and leered.

"Goddess! Girl you need to get a grip. Yes, he's good looking, but all the warriors are! He's not interested in me though, he can't be." I said as we slid into our seats and the bell rang. I breathed in relief that Ang couldn't continue her barrage for at least 50 minutes now.

Class flew by, mostly because I was dreading the questions Ang would have locked and loaded the minute the bell rang. We had a pop quiz, which was too easy for me, but everyone else in class groaned like the teacher was a sadist. During class, I thought about answering Ang's questions and decided that I needed to simply refuse. I took a deep breath in and tried to find my spine. I usually played along with Ang. But this time, no. The bell rang and immediately Ang was right beside me. We headed out the door on our way to our next class.

"Where did you crash into Carson? Was it at the lake? Did he see you swimming? Do you swim naked? Did he see..." I held up my hand to stop her.

"No Ang. Just no." I really didn't want to talk about it. I didn't want rumors starting and I didn't want to cause trouble for our Epsilons. If it wasn't common knowledge that humans were coming onto pack lands, I didn't want to be the one to let it get out.

"Wow. You never tell me no." Ang said softly as we heard a snort behind us.

I was quiet. I didn't know if I should say anything. My wolf was loud though. She kept saying he wasn't telling the whole truth. He was leaving out parts of the story. 'He said he wasn't telling parts that weren't his.' I reminded my wolf. She seemed to think for a moment.'You can leave. You can refuse Carson. You can be like Emilia.' My wolf said happily. 'I don't want to do that to Carson. He's a good man. He deserves to be happy. I deserve to be happy.''We won't make him happy. It will always be a struggle. You won't get to leave if you don't refuse him. He will never let you go.'Uncle Leo cleared his throat. "My dear, what is your wolf saying to you?" I frowned. "I don't want to tell you, because I think it will make you sad.""Should I guess?" He asked.I bit my lip. 'Don't tell him. He will stop us. He will put you under guard.' My wolf said.'Could you please shut up?' I asked her. 'I'm tired of your opinions.'"No, I won't make you guess. But I want you to know, my wolf

Celia seemed happy. She hummed as we sat down for breakfast. She didn't really eat. "My dear, are you not hungry?""I don't normally eat much for breakfast. I usually just drink juice and then grab a protein bar and eat it mid-morning." "Ah. Well then, let's get started." I said pushing my plate away. "No, finish your breakfast. I used to cook breakfast for my Dad and then sit with him while he ate. It's kind of nice to be here with you. It's like a morning with my Dad." She said and smiled. She continued humming. I pulled my plate back. "What are you humming?" "A song Carson and I danced to last night, I sang it softly as we danced. He said 'Imagine we are in our suite, I moved all the furniture to give us a dance floor. It's just you and me. I'll make the world go away for you.' He really is a good man. He seems to always know exactly what I need, even when I don't know myself." I smiled. 'You may be wrong. Emilia never told anyone you were a good man. She never voiced that wha

I waited for Uncle Leo. I was feeling hopeful but nervous. Carson hadn't told me anything about what he and Leo spoke about. 'Because they are going to hide things from you.' My wolf said. 'Why do you think that?' I asked.'They won't want to scare you. They want you to stay and accept Carson.'I rolled my eyes. 'Could you say anything more obvious?' She was quiet. I heard a knock and ran to open the door. Uncle Leo smiled. I threw my arms around him and hugged him. "Thank you so much." "Let's go up to the Beta floor for breakfast." We walked up the stairs and he opened the first door on the right. It was light and airy. The living room had a white loveseat and a matching fainting couch that would be perfect as a reading spot. The deep blue carpet looked plush, like it would feel nice to walk on barefoot. "Wow! You're suite is different than I imagined. I had pictured dark wood, leather furniture, not so bright." He smiled, "This isn't my suite. We are having breakfast here in

Beta Leo's story was sad. I understood why he didn't talk about his past. I'd wondered why he was unmated but never thought it was because his mate had left him. It scared me to think Celly might leave me. She seemed so happy recently. As I left this morning she kissed me and thanked me again for agreeing to train her. I went back to our suite. I wanted to check on Celly and reassure myself that we were okay. Celly had music playing, she was in her closet. I stood in the doorway watching her dance to the music as she looked for something to wear. "You're gorgeous!" I said and smiled. Celly walked towards me, she was only wearing her bra and panties. She wrapped her arms around me and pulled her body tight against mine. Celly kissed me and said, "I hope your meeting with Uncle Leo went well." "It did." I wrapped my arms around her and held her tight. "He is going to talk to you today. I think what he is offering will be good. He wants to help us." Celly smiled and said, "I'm sure i

I paused, remembering how hard it had been. Those days when Emilia wouldn't even come to the door. When Ivar would apologize for her and beg me not to give up on her. I never considered giving up, I loved her too much. "We spent three months like that, me going to her house, her refusing to see me, Ivar telling me she wasn't doing well. Then she stepped outside. She didn't give me a chance to speak. She said, 'Leo, I'm not going to ever be able to accept you as a mate. You need to reject me. You deserve so much better than a used shell of your beloved. Please, set yourself free. Reject me. I will accept and leave Moonless Night.' She stood there, waiting. I was shocked, horrified that she wanted me to reject her."I took a deep breath. "I refused. I said to her 'Emilia, I love you. I need you in my life. I can never reject you. Please, I beg you, look at me. You know our bond is strong, we can survive anything together. I will do anything for you, my love.' She touched my cheek and s

I didn't sleep last night. I paced. I tried to work out how to tell Carson about losing my Emilia without scaring him. Maisie is right, Carson is not me and Celia is not Emilia. The situations are different but similar enough to concern me.It's just before five. Carson should be here any minute. I asked him to meet me on the Beta floor. We will have privacy. I continued to pace. I stopped drinking a few hours ago. I'm sober, but Goddess, I want a drink. Carson knocked. I opened the door. "Beta Leo." He said as he bowed."Carson. Thank you for coming to see me." "You said it would help Celly. I'll do anything to help her." I frowned, I had said the same thing about Emilia and just like Carson I meant it. "Let's sit down." We moved into the living room and sat across from each other."I want to tell you why I don't have a mate. This is going to be difficult for me. I haven't spoken to anyone about my fated mate in years, so please bear with me."Carson nodded and leaned forward."I

Carson's gift was beautiful. It was heavy but the chain was delicate. I had never really worn jewelry, but I didn't want to ever take his necklace off. As I woke up, I felt the weight of the pendant on my chest. It felt good. Being eighteen didn't feel any different, I'm not sure what I expected.

Celly kissed me passionately. She started working on removing my shirt and then turned her body to straddle me. Her skirt riding up her thighs. 'Goddess! She's gorgeous.' I thought. She moved her body against mine. I wrapped my arms around her pulling her closer. I slid my hands down her back and s

After leaving Carson's office, I wandered around a little. I don't like not being busy. That's why I liked school, I always had something to work on, something to read or write. A few hours a day of work was not going to be enough. I would need to come up with a plan. I walked down to the school w

Tuesday morning and I wake up from a whole new nightmare. I'm crying and shaking. I'm trying to be quiet to not wake up Carson. But I failed. I felt Carson's hand touch my arm and I slapped it away. I don't want to explain to him, that now Paul and the boys from school were in my nightmare tauntin
