Chapter 5: Prisoner

The leader groaned when the hunting knife was buried in her shoulder. Amalie turned and saw my position. I was dumbfounded as I was still holding the knife. I suddenly got scared, and my memory came back to what happened at home that night I shot my husband and his mistress.

“Police!” shouted female prisoners who were just watching the riot.

Amalia quickly grabbed the hunting knife from my hand. “Don't speak—bend!” she ordered me.

Amalie is holding the knife and her hand is raised. While I was shaking and bowed in fear.

“Bring that one to the hospital and take the other one to the dungeon!" the order of the jail guard officers.

Amalie didn't fight anymore, and she voluntarily came with the policewoman to the dungeon. And we were sent back to our cells. We were both silent and sat on our respective beds. We are all sad because of what happened to Amalie. But I was more affected by the incident because I stabbed the leader of the other cell. I'm restless, and I wonder why Amalie took on the crime that I committed.

“W-why did Amalie accept my stabbing the leader of the other cell?” I didn't think of asking my fellow prisoners.

“Maybe because you saved her, and maybe she thinks more that she is used to the dungeon,” replied Haressa.

“That's what you always do, Jenn. Fight back and don't be bullied. It's good that you stabbed her! She's an idiot!” replied Zeth.

“B-but what I'm thinking about is Amalie, she might get hurt there!” I worry about her.

“Jenn, don't think too much about Lie, because she's okay there. All you have to think about is yourself and get well soon so that Lie can come out of the dungeon, and you'll be strong,” Glendy said.

“Right. And talk to Lie to teach you how to fight because she is good at fighting," Zeth agreed.

“Yes. She was a good fighter, and you are all the same,” I said to them. Because it is true that they are both good at wrestling, and they even beat the boys.

“Amalie taught us, so now we can defend ourselves,” Haressa replied.

The night came, and everyone fell asleep, but I remained wide awake because my mind was mixed up. One of them is my daughters who are in their father's custody, especially since they are both mama's girls.

“How are my daughters now? I miss them so much…" I couldn't stop my eyes and tears started to fall.

Furthermore, I closed my eyes, at least to stop the flow of my tears. But when I closed my eyes, the confusion of my mind got worse because the incident at home that night came back to my imagination. Because my mind was occupied with some things, I fell asleep at four o'clock. Anyway, I only slept for two hours because the jail guard woke us up at six o'clock for the morning exercise.

“Is Lie back yet?” I asked my companions because I was worried about her.

“That might be three more days in the dungeon,” Zeth answered, and she was currently putting on her broken shoes. While I was fixing my bed.

Until we're in the middle of the court, our names were called one by one. Therefore, our exercises started. While we're in the middle of rehearsal, I immediately noticed that the other group looked at me badly. But I'm the only one avoiding it so that the riot that happened yesterday won't happen again. I feel that they won't stop me, because Jeff has a lot of money to pay them. Even though I was nervous and afraid of what might happen, I needed to be strong because I knew that I would stay in jail for a long time.

"Look at these idiots, they looked at Jenny!" Zeth whispered, after he got close together with Haressa.

"I'm really nervous, maybe what happened yesterday might happen again,'' I answered with a serious expression.

"Don't worry, while we are still here, we won't let them hurt you," replied Haressa.

"Until their leader is gone, they will not try to fight with us," explained Glendy.

“They started the trouble, so they'll follow their leader!” Zeth said boldly.

I am genuinely thankful because the other cell did not attack us. So, sigh in relief. After our exercise, we entered a large room. I don't know what we will do. But in my opinion, it's like a handmade factory. Because there are baskets and bags made of newspaper. I couldn't help but ask my companions.

“What place is this? And what are we going to do?”

“They call it a workshop. They will teach us how to make baskets and bags using recycled paper,” Glendy answered me.

“I see. Thank you, Glendy.”

“Good morning everyone! I'm Irish Onahon. I'm a volunteer economics teacher. Furthermore, I'm taking over Mrs. Delos Angeles. As far as I know, many of you are already knowledgeable. Is there someone who is not yet knowledgeable? Please raise your hand.”

“Ma'am!”

I am one of those who raised their hand. I looked around and saw that many of us raised our hands, I think there were ten. It just means that there are so many people who will be detained in just a few days.

Ma'am Irish Onahon said to move to the side, so she could teach us personally.

“Good luck, Jenn,” said my companions.

“Thank you. Don't worry, I will get better,” I answered them.

I immediately sat down at the empty table, and a prisoner

from the other cell sat next to me. She didn't speak as she just stared at my face. While waiting for Ma'am Irish Onahon to start.

“Hi,” she said.

“Hello!” I responded.

“I am Oba,” she introduced herself.

“I am Jenny,” I replied, and I offered my hand for a handshake.

And later, one of her cellmates approached her. It was one of our opponents, and she whispered something to Oba.
