My fingers recoiled from the blistering hot metal of the sidearm, the heat of the spent barrel stinging my skin, but Julian’s hand clamped over mine like a steel vise, locking my grip around the heavy frame of the pistol.

"Not yet, little bride," he breathed against my ear, his chest rising and falling in deep, measured surges against my back. "The show's over."

Thick, grey smoke rolled through the ruined VIP lounge, smelling of sulfur, scorched velvet, melted plastic, and hot brass. Down below in the main casino floor, the frantic burst of automatic gunfire died into echoing shouting, punctuated by the sharp, authoritative bark of Julian’s enforcers taking back the territory with ruthless, efficient precision.

"Clear the room," Julian commanded, his gravelly baritone cutting through the high-pitched ringing in my ears.

Footsteps retreated instantly. His remaining guards moved like specters through the haze, hauling the dead gunman by his tactical vest out into the hallway, slamming the reinforced mahogany doors shut behind them. The distinct, heavy click of the mechanical lock echoed through the silence like a vault door sealing us in together.

Silence descended thick, suffocating, and heavy with the metallic tang of fresh blood.

Julian didn't let me go. He wrapped a thick, calloused hand around my wrist, forcing my fingers off the grip of his weapon, and dragged me out from behind the overturned table. His grip was an unbroken tether, pulling me through the wreckage of shattered crystal and splintered oak toward his private back-room study. The secluded space was illuminated only by the deep amber glow of the Chicago skyline bleeding through thick, bulletproof glass.

He shoved the heavy oak door closed with the heel of his boot and turned, trapping me backward against the edge of his massive executive desk.

I didn't flinch. The edge of the polished mahogany bit into my lower back, but I planted my hands on the wood behind me, forcing my chin up as he invaded my space completely, refusing to give him a single inch of psychological ground.

He planted both palms flat on the desk on either side of my hips, caging me in. At six-foot-three, his broad frame completely swallowed the dim ambient light, casting a long, dangerous shadow over my body. The dark, intoxicating scent of sandalwood, fresh rain, expensive tobacco, and sheer, unfiltered authority overwhelmed the lingering reek of gunpowder clinging to my hair.

"You didn't scream," Julian murmured. His silver-gray eyes scanned every inch of my face with terrifying precision, tracking the rapid rise and fall of my chest beneath my stained silk blouse.

"Screaming is inefficient," I said, keeping my voice ice-cold despite the sharp, traitorous coil of heat in my belly where his muscular thigh brushed against mine. "And it doesn't stop bullets."

A slow, predatory curve touched the corner of his sharp jawline. "Most high-society heiresses faint at the sight of a drawn blade. You didn't even drop your folder."

"I am not my father's puppet, and I am certainly not an heiress playing dress-up," I spat, leaning forward until my face was bare inches from his, matching his lethal, unblinking stare without breaking eye contact. "I am a forensic accountant who just handed you the keys to bankrupt the three biggest federal prosecutors in the Midwest. Do not insult my intelligence by comparing me to the spineless fools in my family."

Julian’s gaze darkened, shifting from cold, tactical calculation to something heavy, thick, and dangerously volatile. The silence between us stretched, humming with a sudden, magnetic pull that made my throat go completely dry.

Slowly, deliberately, he reached out. His long fingers brushed against my jawline, dragging his thumb over my lower lip to smear the faint trace of his own blood across my skin. The rough texture of his skin against my mouth set off an electric, dangerous static beneath my flesh.

"Bold," he whispered, his voice dropping an entire octave as his eyes locked onto my mouth. "A woman who comes into my domain, threatens me with federal paper, survives an ambush, and still tries to order me around."

"It's not an order, Julian," I breathed, forcing my heart to hammer steadily behind my ribs, refusing to let the trembling in my knees show. "It's an ultimatum. You need my family's clean infrastructure to survive the federal audits coming this winter. And I need your shadow to disappear from my life."

Julian tilted his head, his thumb pressing just hard enough against my pulse point beneath my ear to feel the frantic, betraying leap of my heart against his skin. He leaned down, his lips brushing the sensitive, bare skin below my jawline, sending a sudden spike of adrenaline and molten liquid straight through my veins.

"You brought a war to my door, Evelyn," he purred against my throat, his hands sliding up to grip the edge of the desk behind me, pulling his chest flush against mine until I could feel every hard line of his body. "And you think wearing my ring will keep you safe from the fire?"

"I don't want to be safe from the fire," I whispered back, staring straight into the silver storm of his eyes as he pulled back just enough to look at me. "I want to be the one holding the torch."

For three agonizing seconds, Julian didn't move. The silence in the study was absolute, thick with a dark, suffocating gravity that bound us together in the shadows. His chest rose and fell against mine, a heavy, rhythmic counterpoint to the chaotic race of my pulse.

Then, a low, dark laugh rumbled deep in his chest.

He stepped back half an inch, breaking the suffocating physical press, and reached into his jacket to retrieve the leather binder I’d dropped earlier during the chaotic scramble. He flipped it open with a flick of his wrist, his long fingers trailing casually over the crisp signature line of the marriage contract.

"I don't sign deals in ruined clubs, sweetheart," Julian said softly, his silver eyes flashing with a dark, possessive promise that chilled me to the bone. "My lawyers will review your ledgers by dawn. If your numbers are as sharp as your tongue..."

He closed the folder with a sharp, heavy snap that echoed like a gunshot through the room and met my gaze.

"...we have a wedding to arrange."

He stepped closer once more, towering over me as if marking his territory before the blood on the casino floor could even dry. His fingers caught my chin again, tilting my face upward into the dim amber light.

"Make no mistake, Evelyn," he whispered, his thumb trailing down the center of my neck, stopping over the erratic pulse beating in the valley of my collarbones. "You walk out those doors tonight under my name. Every enemy I have will see you as my greatest vulnerability."

"Let them," I replied instantly, forcing a cold, dangerous smile onto my lips. "They’ll find out soon enough that I'm the trap."

Julian’s eyes flared, a dark, dangerous spark approving of the venom in my voice. He didn't pull away. He held me captive against the desk for a heartbeat longer, letting the weight of his physical superiority sink into my bones before finally letting his hand drop.

"We'll see, little bride," he murmured, turning toward the window as the low rumble of an armored vehicle echoed from the alleyway below. "We'll see.”

The heavy iron gate of the underground garage rattled down behind us, sealing out the Chicago downpour with a resounding, metallic clang.Julian didn't release his grip on my neck until the SUV came to a complete halt in the private subterranean bay. The silence inside the vehicle hung thick and suffocating, still charged with the residue of our brutal collision back at the club and the terrifying weight of the Zurich files resting on the armrest between us.He slid out first, unfolding his massive six-foot-three frame into the dim, clinical fluorescent light of the garage. Before I could move to open my own door, his hand was already pulling it wide. He reached in, wrapping his fingers around my elbow, pulling me out into the cool, concrete-scented air."My estate," Julian murmured, his voice a low, gravelly rasp near my ear as he guided me toward the private, biometric elevator at the end of the bay. "The penthouse occupies the top three floors. State-of-the-art surveillance, bullet

The swollen, feverish heat from the study didn't dissipate when the door swung open; it clung to my skin like a second layer of silk. My lips still throbbed, raw and hypersensitive from the violent press of Julian’s mouth, tasting faintly of iron and the dark, intoxicating peat of his scotch.Every breath I drew tasted of him. Every frantic beat of my heart was a betraying reminder of how easily he had shattered my icy detachment on the edge of that mahogany desk. The transition from the study to the street was swift, silent, and suffocating.Julian’s broad palm remained planted firmly at the small of my back a heavy, possessive anchor pressing through the ruined, blood-stained silk of my shirt as he steered me down a dimly lit, concrete stairwell. Four heavily armed enforcers moved in a tight tactical formation around us, their eyes darting across the shadows of the hidden service exit.Outside, rain lashed down in relentless, icy sheets, stinging my face and soaking straight through

The heavy oak door of the study didn't fully seal out the sound of the aftermath. Outside, the dull thud of heavy plastic bags, the dragging of dead weight, and the sharp, chemical reek of industrial bleach bled through the seams Julian’s cleanup crew moving with silent, terrifying speed. It was 2:00 AM.I stood near the edge of the mahogany desk, my hands still stinging from the violent recoil of the gun. The pristine collar of my white silk shirt was ruined, stiffening into a dark, rusty crimson where Julian’s blood had dripped onto my skin.Julian didn't sit down. He stood by the small brass sink in the corner of the dim office, peeling off his ruined charcoal jacket and tossing it callously over a leather armchair. His dark shoulder holster sat heavy and menacing against his white dress shirt, the leather worn soft from years of use, framing the massive breadth of his back. Without a word, he turned on the faucet and shoved his broad hands under the icy stream, washing away the gr

The bass didn't just play in The Vault; it rattled the ice in the crystal lowballs and vibrated through the velvet-lined walls thirty feet beneath the Chicago pavement. The heavy thrum echoed in my teeth, a rhythmic, suffocating heartbeat that matched the frantic, betraying pulse jumping in my throat.I adjusted the edge of my silk lapel, forcing my breath to steady, forcing my posture into an unyielding line as I stepped past the velvet rope into the VIP lounge. Beneath my left arm, the leather folder felt heavier than lead. Inside lay two years of stolen cartel ledgers, four forged offshore routing numbers, and the single document that would either buy my freedom or sign my death warrant.Three hours. It had been exactly three hours since they lowered Clara’s polished mahogany casket into the freezing mud of the family plot. Three hours since my father clinked whiskey glasses with the very men who paved her way into the ground, hiding his complicity behind tailored suits and false,
