The bass didn't just play in The Vault; it rattled the ice in the crystal lowballs and vibrated through the velvet-lined walls thirty feet beneath the Chicago pavement. The heavy thrum echoed in my teeth, a rhythmic, suffocating heartbeat that matched the frantic, betraying pulse jumping in my throat.

I adjusted the edge of my silk lapel, forcing my breath to steady, forcing my posture into an unyielding line as I stepped past the velvet rope into the VIP lounge. Beneath my left arm, the leather folder felt heavier than lead. Inside lay two years of stolen cartel ledgers, four forged offshore routing numbers, and the single document that would either buy my freedom or sign my death warrant.

Three hours. It had been exactly three hours since they lowered Clara’s polished mahogany casket into the freezing mud of the family plot. Three hours since my father clinked whiskey glasses with the very men who paved her way into the ground, hiding his complicity behind tailored suits and false, tragic tears.

No more grieving. No more playing the dutiful, silent Mercer daughter.

"He doesn't like uninvited guests, lady," a massive guard grunted, stepping into my path before I could cross the threshold. His leather shoulder holster stretched taut against his broad chest, the metallic glint of a heavy caliber sidearm catching the crimson ambient light.

I stopped half an inch from his chest, refusing to look up into his face. I kept my voice smooth, ice-cold, and entirely devoid of the violent, clawing grief threatening to tear out of my ribs.

"Tell him I have the rest of the 2025 Zurich clearing receipts," I said, meeting the guard's hard stare with absolute glass. "And if I walk back out those doors, Agent Vance gets them first."

The guard’s eyes narrowed, his jaw tightening as his hand twitched toward his hip. But before he could lay a finger on me, a low, smooth baritone cut through the pulsing house music from the dark, recessed depths of the central velvet booth.

"Let her in, Marcus."

The guard hesitated for a fraction of a second, his nostrils flaring, then slowly stepped aside, sweeping an arm out to grant me entry.

I took three measured steps toward the circular leather booth. The air in the private alcove was thick, warm, and heavy with the scent of vintage scotch, expensive leather, and a faint, dark undertone of copper and gunpowder that made the small hairs on my arms stand up.

And sitting at the center of the shadows was Julian Vane.

He didn't move as I approached. He leaned back against the deep crimson velvet, one arm stretched lazily along the leather backrest, a crystal lowball glass resting loosely in his broad grip. He was dressed in a bespoke charcoal suit, sharp, imposing, effortlessly lethal. Silver-gray eyes locked onto mine through the amber gloom, tracking my approach like an apex predator calculating the exact weight and velocity of an entering stray.

"Evelyn Mercer," Julian murmured, his dark voice a slow, gravelly slide that sent an unbidden, traitorous heat straight down my spine. "Barely dirt on your sister's grave, and here you are in my sanctuary."

My chest tightened, a sharp spike of ice piercing my lungs, but I refused to give him the satisfaction of even a micro-flinch. I stepped straight into his personal space, reaching under my arm to grab the heavy leather binder. With deliberate force, I dropped it onto the low mahogany table directly between his crystal glass and his solid gold lighter.

The heavy thud cut through the low, pervasive hum of the bass.

Julian didn't even blink. He looked down at the dark leather binder, his eyes lingering on the silver clasp, then slowly raised those icy, terrifying eyes back to mine.

"Stolen cartel ledgers," I said, leaning down slightly, planting both palms flat on the edge of his table. The close proximity brought his scent rushing over me in a wave; sandalwood, fresh rain, and sheer, unfiltered authority. It was suffocating. "Routing numbers, off-shore slush accounts, and the digital signatures of three federal prosecutors."

Julian took a slow, unhurried sip of his scotch, his silver eyes never leaving my face as the amber liquid disappeared past his lips. "And why would the icy, pristine forensic accountant of the Mercer family bring me a death sentence on a silver platter?"

"Because it’s not a death sentence," I whispered, my voice dropping into a dangerous, intimate purr that cut beneath the noise of the club. "It’s a dowry."

Julian’s glass paused half an inch from his lips. A dark, razor-thin smile touched the corner of his sharp jawline. "A dowry."

"I want a marriage of convenience," I said, the words falling like iron weights into the dark space between us. "My family's high-society status to clean your legitimacy in the press. My forensic skills to protect your funds from federal seizure. In exchange, you grant me absolute immunity, access to your household, and—"

"And?" Julian set his glass down on a marble coaster with a soft, deliberate click. He stood up.

The breath caught in my throat. Up close, his sheer physical presence was overwhelming. At six-foot-three, he towered over me, his broad frame easily swallowing the ambient light, casting a long, dark shadow that wrapped around me completely. He took one slow, deliberate step forward, forcing me back half an inch until the back of my knee hit the edge of the leather seating.

"You want my name, sweetheart?" Julian leaned down, his face inches from mine. The heat radiating off his broad body was an electric, terrifying shock to my senses. He reached out, his long, calloused fingers brushing against the bare skin of my collarbone as he adjusted the silk lapel of my coat. The lingering, slow drag of his knuckles against my collarbone made my skin prickle with an intense, confusing electricity.

"I want your protection," I corrected, staring directly into his lethal gray eyes, burying my burning hatred deep behind a wall of polished glass.

Julian tilted his head, leaning down until his warm lips brushed the sensitive shell of my ear, his hot breath sending a violent tremor straight down my spine.

"...you can afford the price of admission."

"I told you my price," I breathed, forcing my eyes to stay locked on his silver gaze as he pulled back just enough to look at me. "Legitimacy."

"No," Julian whispered. He reached out, his thumb pressing just hard enough against the delicate hollow of my throat to feel my heart leaping frantic against his skin. His touch was hot, possessive, dangerous. "You brought me a cage wrapped in silk, Evelyn. The question is whether you built it for me... or if you just walked into mine."

My blood ran cold. My mouth opened to speak; to deny it, to push his heavy hand away from my throat, but the statement died on my tongue as the heavy brass doors of the VIP lounge blew inward with a deafening BOOM.

Glass shattered in a blinding shower. Screams erupted from the main floor below.

Before I could process the sudden, blinding flash of red emergency lights strobing across the walls, Julian’s heavy arm slammed around my waist. With terrifying speed and raw, athletic strength, he yanked me violently against his chest, pulling me down behind the heavy mahogany table just as a hail of automatic gunfire tore through the velvet booth above our heads.

I slammed hard against his chest, my hands instinctively clutching the dark lapels of his suit jacket. The sharp reek of sulfur, hot copper, and ozone filled the confined space.

Julian hovered directly over me in the shadow of the fallen table, his massive frame completely shielding my body from the falling plaster, splinters, and shattered glass. A faint line of blood dripped from a tiny glass cut above his cheekbone, falling straight onto the clean white silk of my blouse.

He didn't look panicked. His silver eyes were ablaze with a dark, predatory adrenaline that made my heart hammer against my ribs like a caged beast.

He reached inside his tailored jacket, pulled a sleek matte-black sidearm from his leather shoulder holster, and racked the heavy slide with an ice-cold, metallic clack.

Before I could draw breath, his broad hand clamped hard around my jaw, tilting my face up toward his. His thumb dragged heavily over my lower lip, smearing the crimson drop of his own blood across my skin.

"Listen to me, little bride," he growled, his voice dropping into a dark, filthy whisper beneath the roaring sirens and shattering wood. "You want my name? You take my bullets first."

"Julian—"

A heavily armored shadow filled the smoke directly above the lip of the table.

Julian didn't blink. He hooked one massive arm around my waist, hauled me flush against his rock-hard body, and fired three point-blank rounds straight up through the thick mahogany table.

Wood splintered violently. The shadow collapsed with a wet thud.

In the sudden, ringing beat of silence that followed, Julian hauled me effortlessly to my feet, trapping my shaking hands against his bloodied chest. His gray eyes burned down into mine, predatory, wild, and entirely unhinged.

"Your contract just got approved, Evelyn," he whispered, pressing the warm, smoking barrel of his gun into my palm and wrapping my fingers tightly around the grip. "Now shoot."

The heavy iron gate of the underground garage rattled down behind us, sealing out the Chicago downpour with a resounding, metallic clang.Julian didn't release his grip on my neck until the SUV came to a complete halt in the private subterranean bay. The silence inside the vehicle hung thick and suffocating, still charged with the residue of our brutal collision back at the club and the terrifying weight of the Zurich files resting on the armrest between us.He slid out first, unfolding his massive six-foot-three frame into the dim, clinical fluorescent light of the garage. Before I could move to open my own door, his hand was already pulling it wide. He reached in, wrapping his fingers around my elbow, pulling me out into the cool, concrete-scented air."My estate," Julian murmured, his voice a low, gravelly rasp near my ear as he guided me toward the private, biometric elevator at the end of the bay. "The penthouse occupies the top three floors. State-of-the-art surveillance, bullet

The swollen, feverish heat from the study didn't dissipate when the door swung open; it clung to my skin like a second layer of silk. My lips still throbbed, raw and hypersensitive from the violent press of Julian’s mouth, tasting faintly of iron and the dark, intoxicating peat of his scotch.Every breath I drew tasted of him. Every frantic beat of my heart was a betraying reminder of how easily he had shattered my icy detachment on the edge of that mahogany desk. The transition from the study to the street was swift, silent, and suffocating.Julian’s broad palm remained planted firmly at the small of my back a heavy, possessive anchor pressing through the ruined, blood-stained silk of my shirt as he steered me down a dimly lit, concrete stairwell. Four heavily armed enforcers moved in a tight tactical formation around us, their eyes darting across the shadows of the hidden service exit.Outside, rain lashed down in relentless, icy sheets, stinging my face and soaking straight through

The heavy oak door of the study didn't fully seal out the sound of the aftermath. Outside, the dull thud of heavy plastic bags, the dragging of dead weight, and the sharp, chemical reek of industrial bleach bled through the seams Julian’s cleanup crew moving with silent, terrifying speed. It was 2:00 AM.I stood near the edge of the mahogany desk, my hands still stinging from the violent recoil of the gun. The pristine collar of my white silk shirt was ruined, stiffening into a dark, rusty crimson where Julian’s blood had dripped onto my skin.Julian didn't sit down. He stood by the small brass sink in the corner of the dim office, peeling off his ruined charcoal jacket and tossing it callously over a leather armchair. His dark shoulder holster sat heavy and menacing against his white dress shirt, the leather worn soft from years of use, framing the massive breadth of his back. Without a word, he turned on the faucet and shoved his broad hands under the icy stream, washing away the gr

"The show's over."Thick, grey smoke rolled through the ruined VIP lounge, smelling of sulfur, scorched velvet, melted plastic, and hot brass.
