Chapter 1

Author: Alyssa J
Six months before I was supposed to receive my eternal transformation, my twin brothers Silas and Julian brought Elena home.

Silas took my calming serum and gave it to her. Julian roared at me: "Get lost! Stop being an eyesore!"

They even took that girl to the Caribbean coast-the place I'd been begging to visit for ten years.

Days later, when they returned to the castle, they discovered I had already undergone the Vampire King's transformation and applied for the century-long isolation research program.

I would never return to this family again.

That day, they searched the world for me like madmen.

……

The day I accepted the Vampire King's invitation happened to fall on the Blood Moon Festival-the sacred day when vampire families gather to celebrate.

The Vampire King walked me to the entrance of the underground laboratory, his tone uncharacteristically gentle: "Alice, in five days you'll undergo my transformation and begin a hundred years of isolation research. Go say a proper goodbye to your brothers."

Vampire territory always carried a bone-deep chill. I stood on a street corner for a long time before finally mustering the courage to call Julian.

Predictably, he'd already blocked me.

I sighed and tried Silas instead. Eighteen years as siblings-didn't I at least deserve a goodbye? No matter how bad things had gotten between us, we should share one last meal.

He hung up on me. Again and again.

I swallowed the bitterness rising in my throat and kept trying. After eighteen attempts, I finally got through.

The phone rang for an eternity before he deigned to pick up, as if answering were some grand act of charity.

Afraid he'd hang up, I spoke as fast as I could: "Today's the Blood Moon Festival. Could we? maybe come home and get together?"

Dead silence on the other end. I added carefully, "I made everyone's favorite cranberry mousse cake by hand, and I prepared French pastries for Elena-the ones she likes."

Elena was the girl they'd taken in.

Julian's voice cut in, cold and impatient: "Thanks to you, Elena's injuries from being pushed down the stairs still haven't healed. We're all at the hospital with her. How dare you bring up celebrating?"

I pretended not to hear the disgust in his voice. "Then how about I bring the desserts to the hospital? We can keep her company and celebrate in her room-would that work?"

I had never humbled myself like this before. Ever since Elena appeared, we'd been fighting nonstop for six months straight. Even during our worst arguments, I'd never stooped this low.

But this was different. Once I left, it would be a hundred years. Who knew if we'd ever see each other again?

Julian said nothing.

A few seconds later, Elena's sickly sweet voice came through: "I want strawberry tarts."

"I'll bring them right over," I said immediately.

After hanging up, I made a detour to pick up the gifts I'd pre-ordered, then finished the pastries by hand in the kitchen. I'd taken every job I could get over the years and saved a hundred and fifty thousand dollars. Now I was spending it all.

For Silas, I'd bought a premium blood jade that accelerated wound healing. For Julian, I'd tracked down a rare ancient vampire spellbook.

And lastly, the box of strawberry tarts. I'd strained the cream three times to make sure the texture was perfect.

When I arrived at the hospital, there was only a small table in the room.

Julian glanced up at me. Before he could say anything, I grabbed a small chair and tucked myself into the far corner by the floor-to-ceiling window, then set out the desserts.

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw him stiffen for a moment, seemingly caught off guard by how small I'd made myself. But it lasted only a few seconds. He turned back and gently cut a piece of strawberry tart to feed Elena.

Silas placed a cushion behind Elena's back, terrified she might be uncomfortable.

Elena had barely taken one bite when her face changed.

"Cough-cough cough!" She suddenly clutched her throat and shrieked, "There's-there's a nutty taste! I'm allergic!"

Her pale face flushed an alarming crimson, and her breathing turned rapid and shallow.

With a sharp crack, Silas swept his hand out in fury and knocked the entire box of pastries to the floor. The ceramic plate shattered, splattering cream and fruit everywhere.

I shot to my feet, my mind reeling. "That's impossible! I made everything myself-there are absolutely no nuts in there!"

Frantic, I dropped to the floor to sift through the broken pieces, desperate to prove my innocence. "Look-strawberries, cranberries, there's nothing-"

In my panic to clear my name, my palm pressed straight down on a jagged shard of porcelain. It sliced deep into my hand, and blood poured out instantly, staining the white cream on the floor red.

"You're still lying!" Silas roared. He unleashed a wave of vampiric pressure that sent me stumbling backward. "Did you try to kill her on purpose? You knew her nut allergy could be fatal!"

My hand shook with pain, blood dripping from my fingertips. "I didn't? I really didn't put any-"

"Enough!" Julian shoved an antihistamine at Elena with one hand while glaring at me with ice-cold eyes. "Your sister nearly suffocated right in front of you, and you're still putting on an act? Get out of this room! I never want to see that vicious face of yours again!"

That accusation cut deeper than any wound on my hand.

I stopped arguing. I just stared silently at the wreckage on the floor, clenching my jaw against the searing pain as I hid my bloodied hand from sight.

I rushed to the hospital.Silas lay in the bed, the once-mighty vampire lord reduced to little more than a skeleton. For a hundred years, he had been driving himself toward death.Julian sat in the shadows on the opposite side of the bed, face buried in his hands, weeping.I walked to the bedside and looked at Silas, his body threaded with tubes. He could no longer speak through his vocal cords, but his eyes were locked on me, his lips moving ceaselessly. He was calling my name."Alice? Alice?"Through the haze, I saw the blizzard again-and a Silas not yet twenty years old, holding me tight, promising me a home.Decades of memories, seen from the other side, felt like one long, absurd dream. His gaze began to drift. When he tried to reach for my fingertips, it took the last of his strength.I reached out and gently clasped that cold, withered hand.I said softly, "When you get to the other side, make yourself a bowl of warm soup. Stop tormenting yourself."A single blood-red tear slid

I returned to North City to visit the Vampire King. The aloof monarch sat on his throne and calmly told me what those two men had done to themselves over the past century.Julian had been rushed to the Elder Council's emergency ward dozens of times for severe dehydration and refusal to feed. Silas, to punish himself for his arrogance, had volunteered as an experimental subject at the research base, spending countless sleepless nights applying holy water to his own wounds. As for Elena-the enraged brothers had stripped her of everything and cast her into the filthiest slum a hundred years ago. Accustomed to luxury, she'd gotten caught up in a vampire territory riot. Her legs were crushed in the chaos, and without medication, the wounds had festered. Brain damage followed. No one knew or cared where she'd ended up-probably curled in some dark corner, barely clinging to life.I listened to all of this and felt nothing. The Vampire King sighed. "They know they were wrong. Every single day

A hundred years later, I finally walked out of the Progenitor Laboratory. The research on resistance to crucifix burns and holy water toxicity had been a resounding success. The drug that freed ordinary vampires from the threat of the Church's silver weapons was approved for widespread distribution at a minimal cost.I stood alongside Caspian and the other researchers at the press conference. The Vampire King himself pinned the Progenitor Medal of Supreme Honor to my chest, granting me a position of the highest esteem. In the audience below, countless vampire families who had suffered under holy water shed tears of gratitude and thanked me. The event fell on the Full Moon Festival-and the anniversary of our parents' sacrifice for this very research.Time had, it seemed, rewritten the ending of their story.I suddenly recalled a moment from many years ago, when my mother held me gently and said:"If we could just work a little faster, the commoners who can't afford expensive protective

Silas's voice was hollow. "There has to be a way.""I'll find a way. I have to find her. We need to bring her home."The Vampire King let out a cold snort, his tone carrying an unmistakable warning:"Put away that bargain-bin guilt, Silas.""Your parents died because the Holy Order located their laboratory. It was a security failure that led to the tragedy.""This time, until the research is complete, no outsider will find them. That is for the researchers' protection-and for Alice's."Silas repeated the words like a man who'd lost his soul: "I'll find a way."The King's patience finally ran out. His eyes glinted with lethal intent:"Listen carefully. If you dare conduct any public search for Alice, you'll draw the attention of every enemy with their sights on the holy relic research.""Don't forget how your parents died. If you truly have even a shred of care left for her? go home, and respect her choice."Silas's pupils trembled violently. The midnight blizzard had turned the vast ex

Julian opened his mouth but couldn't produce a sound for a long time. When it finally came, it was small and broken. Like a man grasping at a final straw, he repeated Elena's fabricated reassurances mechanically:"She'll come back eventually.""She's undergone the King's First Embrace. She's a powerful vampire now-not the weak little human girl she used to be. How could she just disappear?"Julian's eyes were blood-red, brimming with long-overdue tears.Silas's hands shook uncontrollably. He seized Julian by the collar with startling force."She left with Caspian!"Silas's voice trembled even harder, his knuckles white from the grip, nearly crushing Julian's throat."Do you understand what I'm telling you? That was Caspian!""Caspian-the King's First Enforcer! Do you have any idea what he's been working on? Do you?"Breathing became nearly impossible, but Silas had forgotten to struggle. After the crushing terror and despair, all that remained was a bottomless, barren confusion. How co

Silas clawed back a shred of reason from the tidal wave of fear and despair. He blurted out instinctively: "No. She never contacted me."Yes-we'd been siblings for eighteen years. No matter how strained things had become, no matter how much resentment I might hold, I wouldn't enter a century-long isolation program without at least saying goodbye. So I couldn't have left yet.The King gave a cold scoff, his tone growing more certain:"That's impossible.""I was standing right outside the isolation zone. I watched her dial your number with my own eyes.""Last Thursday. Around noon."Silas was about to deny it again. But a memory flashed through his mind like a bolt of lightning, and his blood ran cold.Last Thursday. Noon. That was five in the morning in the Caribbean. That morning at five, he had just taken Elena to watch the sunrise over the ocean. She had clung to him, insisting on photos, and they'd played until nearly dawn before heading back to the hotel. On the way back, Elena had
