Chapter 44: Preparing Dinner
Eva led Flora and Nadi inside the anteroom to the kitchen and had Flora change her slippers with those that were provided in the open shelves. At first, Eva was undecided on Nadi’s footwear, but Flora suggested that she just stay at the anteroom and play with her doll.
“Are you okay playing here, Nadi? Mommy’s just inside this door to help your Auntie Eva,” said Flora.
Nadi looked at her mother and asked, “Why can’t I play inside?”
“Well, Auntie Eva and Mommy will be cooking dinner. There will be boiling water and knives and we don’t want you to get hurt,” replied Flora.
Nadi sat on a stool and stayed silent for a moment. “I also want to cook dinner,” she said sadly. Then, she lifted her head and looked at her mother. “Is the wrinkled lady inside?” she asked.
Flora tried to suppress a laugh but could not when she heard Eva laughing at her side.

Flora continued to watch the guest as he ate, all the time wondering who he was and what work he was doing in the mansion. He ate slowly, cutting his marinated pork with short strokes of his knife and chewing each morsel with the finesse of an aristocrat. It was early morning when Flora woke up. She was not used to hearing the digital clock provided in the room when it issued its alarm at 3:30 in the morning and was surprised at its loud beeping. Immediately, she flicked on the bedside lamp and looked for the off button on the alarm clock. She sat up and dangled her legs out of the sheets as she coaxed her body to wake up. The bed had been soft and comfortable, and Flora was quite happy that even the servants’ rooms were provided such luxury, but somehow, she missed the coziness of her old bed in Cardena. It was small and the cushion had become harder, especially in areas where the cotton had clumped together, but it had afforded her restful nights. It was still dark as the two women and Nadi walked out of the servants’ quarters and walked on the path leading to the main house. There was a slight drizzle and they walked hurriedly to avoid the damp. The wet path glistened under the weak light of a single light bulb that shone from under the roof of the servants’ quarters.“Careful with your steps, Nadi! The guest drank some water and wiped his mouth one last time before folding his napkin neatly and placing it on top of the table.
