Jace’s POV

The kitchen was not my battlefield. I was very bad at it. The fire hissed like it was waiting to burn me alive, and the frying pan clung stubbornly to the eggs as if mocking me. I wiped sweat from my forehead and cursed under my breath.

Of all disguises to pick, I had to come as a cook? That was the only job opening, plus going as a bodyguard wouldn't work in my favor.

I’d been trained to dance on poles for money not to whisk, chop, and sauté. But here I was, trying to prepare breakfast for the Queen of Poison herself, Rosaline and for Lucian, the man I couldn’t stop watching no matter how much I told myself I hated him.

The coffee machine hissed again, telling me the coffee was ready. I turned it off and poured the steaming liquid into Rosaline’s porcelain cup with shaky hands. It smelled burnt. Of course it did.

“Perfect,” I muttered sarcastically. Who knows, getting slapped may be much better than what she'd do to me.

Balancing the tray like it was an explosive, I carri

Maybe he was just hearing things or this was a well acted prank to scare me.Jace’s face was pale with fear as he pressed his ear to the door then his eyes darted toward the window."Something is happening downstairs," his hand rested on the doorknob. "We have to go down and see what it was.""Are you nuts?" I slammed the door shut. "You can't just go down there when you have no damn clue about what's going on." I yelled. “You’re just being paranoid.” I tried to assure him but he wasn't buying it. "Maybe they're having a party or something."Jace didn’t look convinced, but before I could say more, we heard it.BANG!The gunshot cracked through the air, then it was followed by another. Jace jerked upright, his eyes widened with fear and my heart fell. Another shot followed, this time it was getting

  • Velvet and vengeance: stripped by the enemy    Chapter Thirty One

Lucian's PovI never thought I'd see the day where I was this caring and compassionate towards anybody. My heart, I thought , was purely made of stone but this sarcastic man I held proved me otherwise. When the thunderstorm had passed and it began to drizzle, he got up from the couch, saying he was sleepy and I muttered goodnight.I didn't go to bed immediately. There was work to do and I was really hungry so I called the receptionist and asked that food be brought up to the room.Minutes later, there was a knock at the door. I rose from the couch, stretched a bit because my body was still heavy from sitting too long. Jace stirred on the bed, half-asleep, his hair mussed and eyes blinking at me like a child caught between dream and waking.“Room service,” a voice called. "The receptionist asked me to bring up a tray." You could never be too careful. A lot of people wanted me to breathe my last.I cracked the door, peeped to be sure it wasn't a trick before letting the woman in. She wh

  • Velvet and vengeance: stripped by the enemy    Chapter Thirty

Jace's pov.How long is it going to rain for? I glanced at the wall clock; it was almost ten in the night. I laid sprawled on the bed staring at the ceiling while I counted every ceiling board. This and many others are what boredom makes you do. Mr. Lucian, who was seated on the other side of the room, didn't seem to care about the rain nor the silence in the room. He sat there with his head tilted back and his eyes closed.Either he was pretending or he was fast asleep. How could someone just sit there, motionless like some statue carved from ice?I forced myself to sit up. If the storm outside wasn’t going to entertain me, then maybe pissing off Lucian would.I know I know, I was dangling my head in front of a lion's teeth but Lucian wouldn't do anything. Right?Dragging myself off the bed, I sat down on the couch right next to him, close enough that our shoulders brushed. His eyes snapped open, but he didn’t move.“What are you doing?” His voice was low, guarded. "Aren't you supp

  • Velvet and vengeance: stripped by the enemy    Chapter Twenty Nine

Lucian’s POVThe deal with the managers wrapped quicker than expected, but my attention wasn’t on the numbers. My eyes kept sliding across the floor to where Jace leaned against the bar, laughing with the lady. She was leaning in close, way too close for someone who was just having a conversation. Her hand brushed his arm and her lips painted in a smile that was all teeth. I’d seen women like her before—the kind that didn’t show up to a club without a reason.Jace, oblivious as ever, tilted his glass when she touched it, and she let her hand linger on his thigh. That’s when I saw it. The flash of silver between her fingers which she had taken the cover off. A vial tipped just over the rim.I moved before the thought, while my managers called out to me, wondering why I'd just left."Excuse me," I pushed a drunk man aside and he fell to the floor. In one smooth step, I was at Jace’s side. My hand shot out and I snatched the glass away from him, throwing it to the floor. The woman gas

  • Velvet and vengeance: stripped by the enemy    Chapter Twenty Eight

Lucian’s POVThe club was located in the heart of the city, making it the best place for business. Jace and I walked in, squeezing past the drunk and sweaty club goers to my private booth above the main floor. There, I could see everything that was happening. The strippers were performing, drinks flashing in the air and bills thrown onto the stage. Business as usual was going well.Beside me, Jace leaned forward with his elbows on his knees and his eyes glued to the performance below. "What the heck is he doing?" He pointed at the male dancer on stage. He was grinding against the pole amidst the screams of the ladies and a few gentlemen.“I could do better than that.” He hissed in annoyance. "Whoever told him that looking like he wants to mug someone will make him look sexy lied."I turned my head slowly, my eyebrow arched, then I said, “Excuse me?”“You heard me,” he said. “That’s amateur hour. I could have every person in this place begging for more if I was on that stage.”I scoff
