Chapter 2

‘Caleb... Be safe.

‘My baby... Protect your dad. If he can hang on, I’ll tell your dad about you, alright?’

Ember whispered inside her heart again and again.

Greenfield Pub.

Everyone was in a panic as the floor was in a mess.

Tears were rolling down Penelope’s face as she sobbed and said to Nick, “Is the person you called going to be enough? If anything happens to Caleb, I won’t be able to live anymore...”

Nick looked at Caleb, who was having a seizure on the floor with sweat all over his forehead. He then said, “Ember took care of Caleb for three years... She knows how Caleb is doing physically better than any of us here. Not to mention that she’s the one that made the specific drug for his condition.”

There was a creak, and the door opened.

Ember couldn’t care about anything else and immediately kneeled on the ground, her voice filled with nervousness.

“Give me a glass of warm water.”

Her voice wasn’t loud, but it was firm and filled with power. Even Penelope automatically moved to the side.

She then put the pill into Caleb’s mouth and washed it down with water before massaging him professionally.

In a short while, Caleb opened his eyes.

Ember got up and let out a sigh of relief.

“Don’t leave me again, alright?”

Caleb suddenly sat up and said. He then pulled Penelope into his arms, as if he wanted her to meld into his body.

His eyes were red, and indulgence filled his handsome face.

There was silence in the air. There was only the song coming from the room next door. It was the song “Beloved” by the singer Brigid.

“My beloved, now is the most passionate moment in my life...”

The scene was both awkward and heartbreaking.

Ember simply turned around and left with her head hung low as everyone watched.

“Ember!”

Caleb ran out. Crowds were coming and going in the corridor, but that slender figure was no longer there.

While he had been unconscious, he could hear Ember’s calm voice and familiar scent.

However, when he got up, he hugged Penelope instead. Then he saw Ember left with her head low.

At that moment, he felt that something had been forcefully ejected from inside of him, leaving behind a howling pain.

“Caleb, is Ms. Ember gone?”

Penelope also chased after him in a jog, putting her chin on Caleb’s shoulder as she looked at him with her head raised.

Tears filled her eyes. Only then did Caleb turn around and look at her.

“Did I do anything wrong?” Penelope said with a sob.

“You did nothing wrong, but I won’t be able to accompany you tonight. I need to go home now.”

“But...” Tears rolled down Penelope’s eyes. “Nick and I... We prepared a surprise for you...”

“I’m sorry, but I really have to go tonight.”

-

White clouds rolled in the sky as the sun seared the highway.

The car zoomed on the highway, but the driver’s mind was numb.

Wind blew through her hair, and she raised her hand and wiped her eyes. It was wet and cold. Ember didn’t know when she started crying, and the tears hadn’t stopped since then.

Penelope was exquisite, and she had the grace of a proper lady. She looked picturesque even when she cried. Most importantly, she had something that Ember lacked... The confidence to be loved.

If she told Caleb about the baby, would she have a place in his heart?

Ember shook her head with a bitter smile. She felt like a joke, a jester.

Once she was home, she pulled the blanket to cover herself and went to bed.

She didn’t know how long she had slept. A warm embrace covered her icy body.

“I’m sorry.”

Those were the only words that Caleb could think of. He had hurt Ember too much.

Ember said nothing, but simply had her back to the man as she sniveled.

Her eyes were red as she said, “Don’t forget your medicine from now on. After the divorce, I’ll no longer be obliged to get to you as soon as possible, like a tool.”

Caleb frowned extremely deeply.

If he were to be honest, he had not thought of living his life without Ember yet.

A thought flashed through his mind. Had he fallen for her?

“Ember...” Caleb pulled the blanket away and held Ember’s hand. “We have to separate. I’ve promised Penny that she would be Mrs. Lane.”

His promise to Penelope made him say words like that.

She had looked at those eyes endless times. Even when the two of them were intertwining with each other, those eyes were still as frigid as ever.

But when he talked about Penelope, warmth filled his eyes.

“I understand.

“I’ll go back to the hospital later in the evening. Send me over.”

“Sure.”

On their way to Haverhill Hospital, Ember looked at the lights outside the windows with disinterest.

The fragrance of the car was quite weird. She began sweating after smelling it for too long, as if ants were biting her insides. Her stomach was also getting very uncomfortable.

“We can work on the divorce papers tomorrow morning. I’ll see you at the clerk’s office at eleven.”

Ember was not someone who would drag her feet. Once she knew that there was no turning back, she took the initiative instead.

“Sure.”

When Caleb was waiting for the red light, he looked at the woman next to him. There were uncertainties in those calm eyes.

She looked slender but had quite the figure. She had loosely tied her long hair up, revealing the glistening health of the skin on her neck. Despite her dispassionate expression, she looked very amiable. Few would ever notice that she was even angry.

“Ugh...”

Ember could feel a tug from her womb, and she couldn’t help but take a deep breath.

It was the fragrance!

There was a lot of spice mixed into the fragrance. After separating out the different scents, she noticed that there was deer musk inside!

Deer musk had a stimulating effect on the womb and would make it contract.

Ember immediately pulled down the car window, letting the fresh air outside into her lungs.

“How long?”

Ember didn’t want to expose the fact that she was pregnant. She gritted her teeth and looked away.

“Almost there.”

Caleb wanted to ask something else, but saw how Ember was being stubborn and refused to talk to anyone.

Ember’s heart rate sped up as the veins on her forehead were showing. Each breath she took was getting even more painful. All she could do was to gasp for air carefully.

‘Almost... There...’

Ember immediately opened the car door and aimed her face in a direction that Caleb couldn’t see.

Caleb thought it was weird. However, when he saw the text messages that kept coming from Penelope, he stepped on the gas.

Vroom!
