Chapter 3

When the car left, Ember clenched her stomach tightly. She gritted her teeth and walked into the hospital as if she had spent the last of her strength.

She felt like she was choking as she couldn’t make a sound.

The elevator door opened. At this time, the elevator was empty.

Third floor… She remembered the gynecology department was on the third floor...

Her consciousness began fading...

A powerful sense of dizziness came.

Thump!

Crimson liquid began flowing between Ember’s thighs. She immediately lost strength, and her body went limp. She collapsed inside the elevator.

-

All she could see was a dark-colored ceiling. It was like the beginning of a movie.

The smell of disinfectant... And the sound of wheels squeaking as they rolled on the floor...

Ember couldn’t tell whether she was in a dream or back in reality.

“Ember... Stay awake.”

“Prepare the surgery theater! Get to the blood bank and prepare for a blood transfusion!”

“Of course...”

In her dreams was Saint Lucia Convent.

Ember was the survivor of a shipwreck when she was little. Her father passed away, and her mother was in a coma. Her mother’s best friend, Robin Hansen, took her to the all-girls school. She raised her there, and gave her food and shelter.

But nothing could predict what happened there. Ms. Robin passed away. Without the principal’s protection, her life back then had never been bleaker.

She could still remember rope that had become pale from overuse in the yard, and the smell of cheap detergent.

Ember was already quite skinny. She was working through the middle of the night when she lost consciousness after a daze.

When her consciousness returned, she was lying on the back of a boy. The boy was still young, but he was carrying her on her back firmly.

He was mumbling, “Don’t worry. We’ll be at the hospital soon. It’s lucky that I’m around here, otherwise you’re going to get frozen into a popsicle by the cold weather.”

The reassurance in his voice calmed her down.

“What’s your name?”

“Caleb Lane.”

And she remembered that name for seven years.

The feeling of gratitude that was seeded in her heart slowly sprouted and matured. As they grew up, she slowly realized just how great he was. As for her, she used her knowledge to change her fate. She wanted to stand in the light for him to notice her.

The second time she met Caleb was out of coincidence.

The man was the representative of Lane Group for the donation ceremony. Back then, he was calmly delivering a speech in the medical school's hall. The way he spoke and interacted with the people was amazing, and it felt like he was a dazzling presence among them.

In the middle of his speech, Caleb unexpectedly suffered a sudden heart attack and crumpled to the ground. Before anyone else could react, Ember had already rushed onto the stage and began the emergency procedure. That was how she had gained Caleb’s grandmother’s attention.

Ember had wanted to tell Caleb about how he saved her when she was little during the night of their wedding, but Caleb cut her off and told her in honesty that all his heart belonged to a woman called Penelope.

In their marriage, he would get treatment and his needs satisfied. Meanwhile, she would get wealth. It was a fair trade.

She loved him for seven years, but he didn’t say anything even once.

Everyone had their own desires, and Ember’s desire was Caleb’s genuine love.

But could one’s genuine love get another person’s genuine love in exchange?

The anesthesia was wearing off, and the pain once again allowed Ember to feel her surroundings.

She opened her eyes, and she saw the curtains fluttering in the wind. Warm sunlight was spilling into the room.

“Lugh?”

A handsome man wearing a white coat was sitting next to her. He woke up and slowly opened his eyes after he heard the voice.

“You’re awake, Ember?”

The man’s voice was gentle. He was wearing a pair of glasses on his nose, and his eyes were filled with blood. It was obvious that he had worked through the night.

Lugh Archer was Ember’s peer when she was in medical school. He was already the best gynecologist in Haverhill Hospital.
