Chapter 5

Caleb then recalled her strange behavior last night.

He felt regret, worry, and guilt all at once.

[What is she there for?]

[I’m not sure yet.]

Rubbish!

Caleb stepped on the gas, but his phone slipped. It was a lost cause trying to grab it.

When Penelope saw it, she understood the whole thing as if everything had gone according to plan. The assassin she had sent should have dealt with that troublesome woman already.

The Maybach sped on the highway like lightning.

In less than five minutes, Caleb was already going through the hospital’s main door.

There was only one name in his mind. Ember.

“Which room is Ember Lane in?!”

The front desk was taken by surprise as she was roared at. She then quickly checked and said, “I-In room 302.”

The man anxiously reached the room and opened the door.

Then, his gaze fell upon the white sheet on the bed.

And all he could focus on was the stain of blood on the sheet.

“Ah!”

Penelope screamed as she covered her mouth with her hands in terror.

“Someone! Anyone! Help!”

Caleb let out a terrifying roar, feeling his blood boil.

The pain that he was feeling was nothing like he had ever felt before.

On the hospital bed, a woman was lying there with a wound on her neck. There was blood on her chest, and in her hand was a sharp knife.

“Ember?”

Caleb walked over, pulling away the long hair that was covering her face.

In that instance, he calmed down.

It was the face of a stranger. The woman who had died wasn’t Ember!

Then... Where could she be?

Penelope was so shocked that she stumbled back as her face turned white as a sheet, as genuine terror overwhelmed her.

That fool Nimbus had killed the wrong woman?!

Ember must have noticed something!

She had escaped!

If Caleb found out about it, Penelope knew that she would end up ten thousand times worse than the corpse on the hospital bed!

Penelope could already feel herself collapsing as her eyes darted everywhere, her heart thumping nervously.

“Find Ember! I need to know she’s safe!”

Caleb pushed through the crowd outside, and Allen was already waiting there with his men.

Only at that moment did Caleb realize that Ember, that quiet woman, was extremely important to him!

“Understood!”

-

The tall man was sitting on the hospital couch in the hospital’s corridor, surrounded by an aura of loneliness.

“How’s the search going?”

Caleb didn’t even look, not wanting to face the disappointing result.

“I’m sorry, sir. We couldn’t find her.”

They had done a blanket search since the afternoon, but Ember had completely disappeared.

The only clue was that the room number’s plate had been tampered with.

“Boss, the woman that was killed was a patient with severe depression. She was temporarily moved to the third floor. While it was made to look like a suicide, there were signs of it being a murder.”

Caleb narrowed his eyes, and his words were filled with aggression. “Continue.”

“The number plates had been changed. We managed to lift two sets of fingerprints, one belonged to the madam and another belonged to a doctor named Lugh. He’s the hospital’s gynecologist.” Allen paused as he looked at Caleb with melancholy.

Gynecologist?

Caleb suddenly stood up. Ember was pregnant?

Penelope once again returned to Caleb’s side as the man began to wonder.

“Caleb, did you find her?”

“She’s gone. Together with the baby inside of her and another doctor.”

Caleb had said that calmly as the sun was setting.

As the darkness shrouded him, he somehow felt that something was missing inside of him.

“Is it possible that she had that doctor’s child and they eloped?”

Penelope also began to plant conspiracy into his mind.

“Then why didn’t she simply go through with the divorce and start on a clean slate?”

The man simply left.

Penelope was stunned as her excitement was all gone.

Did that mean she had to be a homewrecker for the rest of her life?!

Back in the mansion, the third wine bottle had been emptied and the red liquid stained Caleb’s shirt, revealing the strong muscles hidden underneath.

The man stumbled to the ground. His expression was blank despite his red eyes.

Once back from the hospital, he called the director, Maeve. Ember had passed the interview and signed a contract with the hospital that she would become a resident four years later.

Ember had already planned to leave. She had prepared a way out without showing any signs of it.

He was beginning to regret forcing the divorce.

Caleb’s tie was hanging around his neck loosely. He shut his eyes, hearing nothing but the flowing sands of time.

And now, their situations had been switched. He was the one alone in the dark abyss that was called loneliness.

Ember had taken good care of him all this while and endured his bad temper, but he had been thinking of another woman all along.

He was pathetic!

As he shut his eyes in despair, the air was becoming colder. He felt like he was drowned in the depths of the ocean with flickering lights in front of him. Then, he could feel his chest squeezing, overwhelming all his senses.

He was extremely familiar with the sensation. It was a sign of his heart condition getting triggered.

He didn’t take the medicine.

In the past, every time when his heart condition was going to trigger, Ember would hold him in her arms. Her body temperature would calm him down.

“Em... I’m so sorry...”

But all there was at this time was the loudest silence.

The specific drug was inside the nightstand’s drawer. Caleb pulled open the drawer with a trembling hand and shoved the pills into his throat.

There was a piece of paper underneath the bottle of drugs.

It was the pregnancy report.

There were dried stains on the slip. They looked like tears.

-

Four years later.

“This is the afternoon news. This morning, Ms. Penelope of the Ferguson family had purchased the land belonging to Saint Lucia Convent in Southfeld, south of Haverhill City. The ribbon cutting ceremony will be held later at 5 in the evening. However, the relocation of the orphans in the all-girls schools has become the topic of discussion among the netizens...”

The woman’s voice that could make people yawn continued being played through the screen in Peachford Airport.

A slender woman wearing sunglasses and a coat of light tan was walking through with a young boy holding her hand.

“Mommy, isn’t Saint Lucia Convent the place you grew up in?”

The boy asked as he raised his head.

“That’s right, Avery.” The woman’s voice was calm and there wasn’t much expression on her face.

However, all she could do was snicker coldly in her heart.

It had only been a few years, but Penelope was already getting quite bold. Saint Lucia Convent’s assets had been given to her by the previous principal, Robin in her will. It had nothing to do with Penelope.

However, when the assistant principal Donelle Smith saw that Ember was gone for four years, she then worked together with Penelope with the intention of making a profit through the school!

‘Penelope... It’s time for us to settle our score.’
