Chapter 8

Ember had already left, while Penelope’s ankle was wounded so she couldn’t move. As such, Caleb couldn’t simply leave at this moment.

Caleb hesitated before turning around, removed his coat, covered Penelope, and then picked her up like a princess before walking out.

In a place that Caleb couldn’t see, Penelope smirked.

So what if Ember was back? As long as Penelope acted pitiful, Caleb would remain by her side without hesitation!

There was nothing but coldness in her eyes as her hatred toward Ember had deepened.

Once in the car, Penelope grabbed Caleb’s arm and said, “Caleb, I want to go to Haverhill Hospital.”

Haverhill Hospital was quite famous, so it made sense that Penelope wanted to go there.

Caleb also had his own agenda, thinking that once Ember was back, she would head to the hospital. So, he agreed almost instantly.

While they were on their way to Haverhill Hospital, Caleb seemed distracted.

“Caleb! It’s a red light!”

Penelope cried out, snapping him back to reality.

He lit up another cigarette with a calm expression. As he looked at the traffic in front of him, he was getting a bit annoyed.

“Is something bothering you?” Penelope forced herself to ask despite knowing the answer.

All she saw was him shaking his head lightly. “No.”

Penelope wanted to press further, but the car had already arrived at Haverhill Hospital. The sudden break made Penelope’s face go pale from the pain.

She looked at Caleb pitifully, but he didn’t even look at her and simply went down and pushed a wheelchair over.

Penelope quietly tightened her fists, but quickly let go as she put on a gentle expression. She got into the wheelchair and simply let Caleb push her into the hospital.

Her ankle had a fracture, but it wasn’t too serious. After the doctor bandaged it, she could be discharged.

However, after hearing it, Penelope narrowed her eyes and quickly said, “No. I’m in a lot of pain. I want to be admitted into the hospital.”

The doctor didn’t say anything. The fracture could turn out to be serious in the end, so it was fine if she were to request to stay. So, he issued her a letter of admission.

She let out a sigh of relief. Once everyone had left, she pressed the bell.

The nurse heard the bell and walked over. “Is something wrong, Ms. Penelope?”

Penelope let out a smile and apologized, “I’m so sorry, but my foot is still in a lot of pain. I wonder if it was properly bandaged?”

“Our hospital won’t make such a mistake. I’ll help you check.”

“Yes, please. I heard that your hospital’s Dr. Ember is back?” Penelope let out a gentle smile and made a passing remark.

The nurse nodded. “So you heard about Dr. Ember too, Ms. Penelope? She was abroad for her further studies and just returned recently.”

When Penelope heard the nurse’s words, her expression shifted slightly. She faked a smile and pretended to relax as she wanted to learn more. “It must be hard for Dr. Ember to be abroad alone.”

The nurse didn’t overthink her intention. They could hear all kinds of rumors all the time and liked to gossip whenever they had the time.

“Of course. But luckily, Dr. Lugh was with her. They are very good friends.”

Dr. Lugh? There was a glint in Penelope’s eyes. She knew that Ember wouldn’t be so well-behaved when she was abroad on her own.

“Your foot is a bit swollen. I’ve checked it for you, however. There’s nothing wrong with the bandage, but you have to be careful not to let it get wet.”

“Understood. Thanks.” Penelope smiled gently, just in time to see Caleb approaching. She quickly dismissed the nurse.

Seeing Caleb coming in, she smiled. “Caleb, there’s a Dr. Ember in their hospital too. I heard that she’s recommended by Dr. Lugh.”

Caleb’s hand froze, and he looked at Penelope with a frown.

“Caleb, she left without giving you a reason, but she didn’t finalize the divorce too. And then...

“She secretly got together with another man. If word got out, you...”

“Enough, Penny.” Caleb stopped Penelope from continuing by raising his hand with a tired look.

“I don’t want to listen to gossip about her.”

Penelope pitifully lowered her head, looking sad. When she looked up, she saw Caleb already looking outside a few times.

His heart was not with her.

That made her feel even worse. Ember had already left for four years... Yet he still couldn’t forget her.

“Is there anything you want to buy? I’ll buy it for you,” Caleb got up, wanting to get some fresh air.

She took a deep breath and shook her head with a smile. “I’m already very happy that you can accompany me. I don’t need anything else.”

“You have to eat a little. Wait here.”

With that, Caleb left without even looking back.

There was regret in Penelope’s eyes. But there was nothing she could do with the pain in her ankle. All she could do was to see Caleb’s figure disappearing from the room.

“Long time no see, Mr. Lane.”

A cold voice came from behind. He could hear a sense of longing and mixed feelings in that tone.
