~Vincent~

I waited until dinner.

Luciano sat at the head of the table like the day had tried to kill him and lost. Sleeves rolled up, top button undone, that same unreadable calm on his face. I pushed food around my plate and made a decision.

I needed him to stop watching me so carefully.

After the soirée, after the study, after Carlos caught me with my hand on that compartment, Luciano’s attention had turned into something heavier. Something that felt like he was waiting for me to slip again.

~Luciano~The call came just after midnight.I was still in the study when my phone lit up. Carlos’s name.“They took it,” he said the second I answered. “The fake route we leaked. Two trucks. They hit the warehouse on 17th twenty minutes ago.”I leaned back in the chair. “Casualties?”“None of ours. We weren’t really there. But they left three of their own on the floor. Kadvash men, from the tattoos.”“Good.”“They’re getting bolder.”“Or more desperate.” I stared at the dark window. “Clean it up. Make sure nothing traces back to the real shipment. And find out who inside gave them the confidence to move this fast.”“Already on it.”I hung up.The trap had worked. Someone under the upper seat was still feeding information to the Kadvash family. Now I had proof they were willing to act on it. The next step would be tighter. Bloodier.I stayed in the study longer than I needed to, turning the brass chain over between my fingers the way I had started doing when the house went quiet. Vi

I pushed food around my plate and made a decision.I needed him to stop watching me so carefully. After the soirée, after the study, after Carlos caught me with my hand on that compartment, Luciano’s attention had turned into something heavier. Something that felt like he was waiting for me to slip again. If I kept acting shaken or careful, he would only dig deeper. So I put the old version of myself back on. The one that got under his skin on purpose. The one that made him roll his eyes instead of study me like a problem.I leaned back in my chair and kept my voice light.“I want Hugh to stay here for a few days.”Luciano didn’t look up. “No.”“That was fast.”“I don’t need strangers in my house.”“He’s not a stranger. He’s my friend. And I’m already stuck here, so what’s one more person?” I til

  • Vengeful Obsession    Chapter 15 The Call

~Vincent~I waited until the house had settled into its usual late-night quiet before I pulled the photograph out from under the mattress. My mother’s face looked back at me under the soft glow of the bedside lamp. Younger. Almost soft. Standing next to Vangand like she belonged there. And that third man, the one I still didn’t recognize, half in shadow behind them.See you soon.I turned the photo over again, as if the handwriting might suddenly explain itself. It didn’t.I grabbed my phone, locked the bathroom door behind me, and sat on the closed lid of the toilet. It was the only place in this house that felt even slightly private.Hugh answered on the second ring.“You only call this late when something’s wrong,” he said. No greeting. Just that.I kept my voice low. “I found something.”There was a short pause. “Where are you?”“Bathroom. Door locked.”“Talk.”I told him about the study. The hidden compartment. The photograph. The PRIVATE file I never got to open. I left out the

~Luciano~Carlos was waiting for me the moment I stepped through the front doors. He didn’t speak until the staff had cleared the hallway and we were alone near the study.“Your husband was in there,” he said, tipping his head toward the closed doors. “This afternoon.”I stopped walking.Carlos leaned a shoulder against the wall, voice dropping into the familiar, easy tone like he was bored already. “Found him standing by the bookshelf. Hidden compartment wide open. That PRIVATE file just sitting there with the lid up. He didn’t take it, but he was definitely looking.”I turned my head slightly. “And?”“Had something shoved under his shirt. Kept his hand glued to his chest the whole time I was talking to him. When I asked what the hell he was doing, he said he was looking for a book. Claimed he dropped his phone and noticed the wood sticking out.”Carlos huffed a quiet laugh that had no real humor in it.“Kid was shaking like a leaf. Tried to play it cool. Didn’t work.”I stared at th

~Vincent~The door opened, and Carlos came into view.My heart slammed so hard against my ribs I was sure Carlos could hear it.He stepped inside, one hand still on the handle, eyes already scanning the room the way he always did, slow, thorough, missing nothing. Those sharp, assessing eyes that never seemed to blink at the wrong moment.I kept the photograph pressed flat against my chest under my shirt, fingers digging into the edge of the paper hard enough to crease it. The sharp corner bit into my skin. I didn’t dare move.“Vincent.”His voice was calm. Too calm.I forced my face into something resembling boredom and lifted one shoulder. “Carlos.”He closed the door behind him with a soft click. The sound felt louder than it should have.“What are you doing in here?”“Looking for a book.” The lie came out smoother than I expected. I even managed to sound mildly annoyed. “Luciano has a whole library and I’m bored out of my mind. Thought I’d find something that isn’t about business o

~Vincent~I woke up to the sound of rustling.I rubbed my eyes and looked around, still half asleep. It took me a few seconds to remember where I was.Luciano's room. I turned my head and found him already standing in front of the wardrobe, getting dressed. He glanced at me through the mirror.“Morning.”His voice was calm and as cold as usual.“Morning,” I mumbled, my voice still groggy.“Food would be here soon. Feel free to go back to your room. I won't be back till night, not sure yet. Guards will be stationed all over the house, so you'll feel safer.”I pushed myself up against the headboard.“Ohh. Can I call Hugh over then?”“No. That'll be when I'm in the house with you.”I frowned slightly. That was strange, but I didn't question it.“Okay.”Luciano finished dressing and walked toward me. He stopped beside the bed and pulled out his phone.“I already put my number in your phone. Weird you never had it.”“I didn't—”“Call me if anything's wrong.”I stared at him for a moment be
