Chapter 3

Autor: Egg-Tart
My employees' wages were still sitting in the business account. How was I supposed to access it now that my restaurant was shut down?"

I took a step back. "No, I can't go with you! I still have more than 20 reservations on the books. My suppliers will be here to collect payment the day after tomorrow, and I haven't paid my employees their wages for this month yet!" I rambled. "I seriously didn't break the law!"

Yet, two cops grabbed me by the shoulders and pinned me in place. My arms were twisted behind my back, and the pain made me gasp. "Please cooperate with us, Peter. We're just following protocol."

I thrashed wildly against their grip, but my arms were handcuffed, the cold metal digging painfully into my wrists.

I looked up and noticed a crowd of onlookers had gathered outside, gawking and pointing fingers at me.

"Look, he's still resisting. He definitely has a guilty conscience!"

"I used to think he was an honest person. Now, I know you really can't judge a book by its cover."

"He'll be sentenced for at least five years for selling endangered fish, right? Serves him right!"

I was frog-marched toward the police cruiser.

When I walked past the street across from my restaurant, I spotted Brandon standing in front of a bubble tea shop, holding up his phone and filming me. The corners of his lips were curled into a smirk, and he even made a throat-slitting gesture at me.

I was so furious that my eyes almost popped out of their sockets. If I hadn't been restrained, I would have charged over and torn his face apart.

When I arrived at the police station, I was taken into the interrogation room. The overhead light was so blinding that I could barely keep my eyes open.

The officers across from me flipped through the documents in their hands. "Fess up, Peter. Where did you really get these fish?"

"I've told you countless times already. They're farm-raised hybrid sturgeon delivered to me by Justin! All my permits are in order. In fact, you can look into Justin's fish farm!" I screamed until my throat was raw.

The officer across from me knocked on the table. "We have looked into it. Justin's farm was actually ordered to suspend operations for rectification due to fire safety violations half a month ago. You claim you received the shipment from him, yet your invoice is dated just three days ago. How do you explain that?"

My mind spun. Justin did tell me a few days ago that he needed to make some fire safety adjustments. He said this batch was transferred from another supplier in the industry and that all the paperwork was in order, so I didn't think much of it.

I parted my lips and was about to explain when the officer beat me to it. "The video has gone viral. It's been viewed millions of times, and the damage it's caused is severe. If you refuse to give us an explanation, then once the inspection results come out, even if your fish turns out to be farm-raised hybrid sturgeon, you can kiss your restaurant goodbye."

He paused for a moment before looking up at me. "Oh, by the way, your wife is here with your daughter."

The iron door was pushed open, and my wife, Grace Ortiz, stood at the entrance with Flora in her arms.

Flora was clutching the small dinosaur plushie that I had bought for her yesterday.

The moment she spotted me, she burst into tears. "Daddy… Daddy, what happened to you?" Her little face was flushed crimson from crying, and her voice pierced my heart like a needle.

Grace's eyes were red too, and her lips trembled so much that she could barely make a sound. "Peter, can't you just admit you were wrong? The regulatory officers told me that as long as you release an apology statement, admit that you failed to properly check the goods when you purchased them, and pay a 200-thousand-dollar fine, we can still fight for a lighter penalty.

"If you don't, our restaurant will be shut down, you'll have a criminal record, and Flora's future schooling will be affected! What are we supposed to do then?"

Looking at Flora, who was bawling her eyes out, and Grace, whose face was streaked with tears, all the strength I'd been holding on to suddenly drained away. It dawned on me that Brandon had never been afraid of the evidence I had against him.

He had calculated everything. He had calculated the rate at which public opinion would escalate, how the regulators would prioritize appeasing the netizens over finding the truth, how a small business owner like me couldn't afford to wait 15 days for the inspection results, and how I would crumble the moment I saw my wife and child in tears. He understood this entire game far too well.

Gazing at Flora, who was crying so hard that she had started hiccupping, I felt my Adam's apple ache as I swallowed hard. Ultimately, I nodded and rasped, "Fine. I'll apologize and pay the fine."

The officer across from me breathed a sigh of relief.

I looked up at him. "But I have one condition. You have to follow the official verification process. Find an authoritative third-party organization to conduct the inspection and have the entire process notarized. I want the final report to state clearly whether these are Cerulean sturgeon or farm-raised hybrid sturgeon."

Clutching his phone, the young man's face burned one moment and paled the next. He bowed to me right then and there and apologized to me. He also promised he'd never do something so shameful again. Later, he really did change his approach. He started filming honest small businesses hidden in local alleyways and even helped promote the shops in our support group for free. He eventually became a locally well-known ethical food blogger. Last month, he even came by specifically to give me a copy of the food review guide he had made himself. "Thank you for showing me the right path." He wrote on the flyleaf.…Customers started filling the restaurant at lunchtime. Vindicator0001, the person who had previously attacked me online and later came to apologize to me, also showed up. He was now an administrator of my business owners' rights protection support group, helping everyone organize legal materials for everyone pro bono. A year after our grand reopening, I hung a red banner above the entrance. "One-Year Anniversary Celebration. Everything's 32% Off. Free Plum Juice for Sanitation Workers and Delivery Drivers."Cece, our ginger cat, was curled up into a ball at the feet of the front desk, dozing off. The tip of its tail swayed occasionally as it brushed against the pile of candies next to it.This was the stray cat that Brandon had scared away years ago when he kicked over a stool in my restaurant. Later, when I renovated my restaurant, it came running back on its own. So, I decided to keep it. Flora was the one who named it, claiming it was to commemorate the sturgeon from our family's restaurant that had almost been falsely accused.Once summer vacation started, Flora worked at the restaurant as a little helper. With her hair tied into pigtails, she carried a small tin box filled with candies and offered one to every customer she saw. Her silver tongue won everyone over. The young girl who was s

I agreed on the spot. During the first week of the promotion, both our restaurants' revenues increased by 40%.At the end of the year, I sat down and tallied up the books. Even though I had suffered a major setback earlier in the year, my restaurant's revenue had tripled in the second half of the year. After setting aside the money for the school-district apartment, I still had 30 grand left. I gave all my employees a year-end bonus worth three times their monthly salary, and I also bought each of them a new phone. My employees were all thrilled, promising to give it their all in the following year.…I closed the restaurant and headed back to my hometown with Grace and Flora on Christmas Eve. Mom and Dad had already prepared dinner and were waiting for us. Flora showed them her award certificate. It was the first-place award she had won in her kindergarten drawing competition. The picture she drew was of our grilled fish restaurant. The restaurant was filled with customers, t

In August, the local consumer protection agency reached out to me and invited me to give a seminar to small business owners across the city on ethical business practices and how to protect their legal rights. I put on a crisp, clean shirt and headed over. More than 300 shop owners were seated in the audience. I shared my experience with them, explaining how to preserve evidence and how to defend their legitimate rights and interests. Once I wrapped up my seminar, a bunch of people gathered around me to hand me their business cards, saying they hoped we could stay in touch and exchange ideas in the future. …I received a notice from the court in mid-September. All of Brandon's illicit gains had been recovered and returned. Every single one of the 23 affected business owners had received the money they were owed. The jewelry store owner who had been extorted the most money was the one who had previously been forced to pay Brandon 30 grand. When he received his money back, he went

Flora scampered over and popped a piece of freshly grilled, crispy fish maw into my mouth before using her soft little hands to wipe away the sweat from my forehead. "There were so many people today, Daddy! Will we have this many customers every day from now on?"I ruffled her hair and looked up to catch Grace smiling at me. Bathed in the soft amber glow of the streetlight, she looked even more beautiful than the day I first laid eyes on her. A little ways down the street, mouthwatering aromas wafted from the glowing storefronts. The owner of the cheese fondue restaurant next door was calling out at the top of his lungs to drum up business, while the sweet fragrance of bubble tea drifted over, mingling with the smoky scent of our grilled fish. It was the cozy, familiar bustle of everyday life that I knew so well. When we closed for the night, Grace and I crouched at the entrance, tallying up the day's earnings. The revenue exceeded 30 grand. It was twice as much as what I had ma

I gave each of my employees another five grand as a compensation bonus for the time they had been forced out of work. I called them to let them know that my restaurant was reopening and that anyone who wanted to come back could report to work immediately with a 20% raise. On the other end of the line, the young waitress choked out, "I knew you were framed, Peter. I'll report to work tomorrow!"I didn't pocket the rest of the money, either. I used half of it to upgrade my restaurant's seafood supply chain, switching entirely to live fish that were slaughtered the same day they were delivered. After hanging up the phone, someone tapped me on the shoulder. I looked up and saw Justin, my former supplier. He was carrying two crates of freshly delivered hybrid sturgeon, and he handed them to me, grinning. "I owe you an apology, Peter. I should've told you the shipment had been sourced from another supplier. If I had done that, you wouldn't have gone through so much hardship."Moving fo
