Chapter 2

Autor: Egg-Tart
Looking at the smug look on Brandon's face—like he already had me right where he wanted me—all the blood in my body instantly surged straight to my head. I shoved away his hand, which was holding his phone. "Go ahead and post it. I'm calling the cops right this instant! We'll wait for them to get here and have a third-party organization conduct an inspection. Then, we'll see whether these are wild Cerulean sturgeon or farm-raised hybrid sturgeons!"

"You're going to call the cops?" Brandon scoffed, as if he'd just heard the funniest joke in the world. He then slipped his phone back into his pocket. "Fine by me. Go ahead and call them. I'd love to see whether the cops will believe your stack of papers or the public opinion from my three million followers. When my fans surround your restaurant and splash paint all over your storefront, when you can't run your business anymore, and your daughter gets judged by everyone around her, don't say I didn't warn you!"

Having said his piece, he swaggered away. When he left, he deliberately kicked over the plastic stool by the entrance, startling the stray cat who had been crouching there waiting for leftover fish. It let out a sharp meow and darted off.

He walked to the bus stop across the street and came to an abrupt halt before turning back around. Standing at the entrance of my restaurant, I watched as he waved his phone at me. A sinister smirk tugged at the corners of his lips, and he mouthed the words. "Just you wait!"

I stood rooted to the spot, watching his figure disappear into the crowd. My grip on my phone tightened until my knuckles turned white.

I pulled out my phone and was about to dial emergency services when the customer service phone on the counter suddenly blew up. A relentless barrage of WhatsApp notification chimes began ringing out in rapid succession.

My heart sank. I hurriedly grabbed it and unlocked it.

Brandon's video was already live. Within ten minutes, it had already surpassed 100 thousand likes. The comment section was completely flooded with insults directed at me.

"A ten-year-old establishment is actually selling endangered fish? Absolutely despicable!"

"I went there with my kid last week. If anything happens to my child, I won't let him get away with it!"

"Drop the address! I'm heading over right now to splash paint all over his storefront. Scum like him shouldn't be allowed to run a restaurant!"

A deafening crash shattered the air as a brick smashed a gaping hole through the glass door of my restaurant, showering the floor with shards of glass. Someone outside shouted at the top of their lungs. "Get the hell out of this street, you wicked business owner! How dare you sell endangered fish! Why don't you drop dead already?"

I rushed outside to catch them, but they were long gone. Only half a brick remained lying on the ground, with the word "DIE" painted right on it.

The wail of sirens drew closer from a distance. Inspectors from the market regulatory office arrived alongside officers from the police department.

I recognized the officer leading the group, Officer Miller. He had greeted me before during previous hygiene inspections.

Holding up his body camera, his expression was as dark as a thundercloud. "Peter, we received a report that you're selling protected endangered fish. Please come back with us to cooperate with the investigation."

I hastily pulled out all the documents in my drawer—the purchase invoices, quarantine certificates, breeding permits, my chat history with Justin, and payment receipts—and shoved the thick stack into his hands. "Officer Miller, look! These are all legitimate! These are farm-raised hybrid sturgeon, not wild Cerulean sturgeon. That blogger deliberately spread false information! He even demanded 15 grand from me as hush money!"

Officer Miller flipped through the documents in his hands. When he looked up at me, there was a trace of sympathy in his eyes, but also cold professionalism. "Peter, we'll verify these documents. But the video has already gone viral, and tens of thousands of people are watching. We've been ordered to shut down your restaurant immediately.

"The sturgeons will be confiscated and sent for official inspection. Now, you're coming with us to assist with the investigation."

"Inspection?" My voice trembled from anxiety. "In that case, inspect them now! I'll go with you. If the results prove I'm telling the truth, I'll sue that blogger for defamation!"

The young officer beside us frowned. "The results won't be ready for another 15 working days. The public backlash is already getting out of hand. We've been ordered to detain the individuals involved, shut down the restaurant for rectification, and wait until the results come out."

Those words were like a bucket of ice water, instantly snuffing out every last shred of my hope. I'd miss the entire summer peak season in 15 working days. It was bad enough that my down payment on a house in a great school district had gone up in smoke, but how was I going to pay back my suppliers?

Clutching his phone, the young man's face burned one moment and paled the next. He bowed to me right then and there and apologized to me. He also promised he'd never do something so shameful again. Later, he really did change his approach. He started filming honest small businesses hidden in local alleyways and even helped promote the shops in our support group for free. He eventually became a locally well-known ethical food blogger. Last month, he even came by specifically to give me a copy of the food review guide he had made himself. "Thank you for showing me the right path." He wrote on the flyleaf.…Customers started filling the restaurant at lunchtime. Vindicator0001, the person who had previously attacked me online and later came to apologize to me, also showed up. He was now an administrator of my business owners' rights protection support group, helping everyone organize legal materials for everyone pro bono. That day, he went the extra mile and carried in a towerin

A year after our grand reopening, I hung a red banner above the entrance. "One-Year Anniversary Celebration. Everything's 32% Off. Free Plum Juice for Sanitation Workers and Delivery Drivers."Cece, our ginger cat, was curled up into a ball at the feet of the front desk, dozing off. The tip of its tail swayed occasionally as it brushed against the pile of candies next to it.This was the stray cat that Brandon had scared away years ago when he kicked over a stool in my restaurant. Later, when I renovated my restaurant, it came running back on its own. So, I decided to keep it. Flora was the one who named it, claiming it was to commemorate the sturgeon from our family's restaurant that had almost been falsely accused.Once summer vacation started, Flora worked at the restaurant as a little helper. With her hair tied into pigtails, she carried a small tin box filled with candies and offered one to every customer she saw. Her silver tongue won everyone over. The young girl who was s

I agreed on the spot. During the first week of the promotion, both our restaurants' revenues increased by 40%.At the end of the year, I sat down and tallied up the books. Even though I had suffered a major setback earlier in the year, my restaurant's revenue had tripled in the second half of the year. After setting aside the money for the school-district apartment, I still had 30 grand left. I gave all my employees a year-end bonus worth three times their monthly salary, and I also bought each of them a new phone. My employees were all thrilled, promising to give it their all in the following year.…I closed the restaurant and headed back to my hometown with Grace and Flora on Christmas Eve. Mom and Dad had already prepared dinner and were waiting for us. Flora showed them her award certificate. It was the first-place award she had won in her kindergarten drawing competition. The picture she drew was of our grilled fish restaurant. The restaurant was filled with customers, t

In August, the local consumer protection agency reached out to me and invited me to give a seminar to small business owners across the city on ethical business practices and how to protect their legal rights. I put on a crisp, clean shirt and headed over. More than 300 shop owners were seated in the audience. I shared my experience with them, explaining how to preserve evidence and how to defend their legitimate rights and interests. Once I wrapped up my seminar, a bunch of people gathered around me to hand me their business cards, saying they hoped we could stay in touch and exchange ideas in the future. …I received a notice from the court in mid-September. All of Brandon's illicit gains had been recovered and returned. Every single one of the 23 affected business owners had received the money they were owed. The jewelry store owner who had been extorted the most money was the one who had previously been forced to pay Brandon 30 grand. When he received his money back, he went

Flora scampered over and popped a piece of freshly grilled, crispy fish maw into my mouth before using her soft little hands to wipe away the sweat from my forehead. "There were so many people today, Daddy! Will we have this many customers every day from now on?"I ruffled her hair and looked up to catch Grace smiling at me. Bathed in the soft amber glow of the streetlight, she looked even more beautiful than the day I first laid eyes on her. A little ways down the street, mouthwatering aromas wafted from the glowing storefronts. The owner of the cheese fondue restaurant next door was calling out at the top of his lungs to drum up business, while the sweet fragrance of bubble tea drifted over, mingling with the smoky scent of our grilled fish. It was the cozy, familiar bustle of everyday life that I knew so well. When we closed for the night, Grace and I crouched at the entrance, tallying up the day's earnings. The revenue exceeded 30 grand. It was twice as much as what I had ma

I gave each of my employees another five grand as a compensation bonus for the time they had been forced out of work. I called them to let them know that my restaurant was reopening and that anyone who wanted to come back could report to work immediately with a 20% raise. On the other end of the line, the young waitress choked out, "I knew you were framed, Peter. I'll report to work tomorrow!"I didn't pocket the rest of the money, either. I used half of it to upgrade my restaurant's seafood supply chain, switching entirely to live fish that were slaughtered the same day they were delivered. After hanging up the phone, someone tapped me on the shoulder. I looked up and saw Justin, my former supplier. He was carrying two crates of freshly delivered hybrid sturgeon, and he handed them to me, grinning. "I owe you an apology, Peter. I should've told you the shipment had been sourced from another supplier. If I had done that, you wouldn't have gone through so much hardship."Moving fo
