Chapter 1

作者: Perfect Timing
The hospital room reeked of disinfectant.

The patient, Ted Wolfe, was curled up on the bed, his face pale as he vomited nonstop.

His family crowded around him, rubbing their hands anxiously and staring at me, waiting for me to decide what to do.

Seeing the scene, my heart sank hard, my nails digging into my palm.

In my last life, this was where I took my first fall and became the department's laughingstock.

Sure enough, the next second, the thoughts of the beautiful intern nurse, Sonya Row, echoed in my ears.

[What should I do? Should I tell the family this painkiller can be addictive and really bad for the body? If they just wait a few more minutes, he'll recover on his own. There's no need to spend money at all.]

I immediately looked toward the corner.

Sonya was lowering her head and fiddling with the IV stand, looking obedient and harmless, but I caught the way her eyes subtly swept over Ted and his family.

Just as expected, the moment her thoughts ended, the expressions on Ted, his wife, Olivia Wolfe, and their daughter, Cheryl Wolfe, all changed.

The three of them turned toward Sonya at the same time, doubt and surprise flashing across their faces.

Meanwhile, the other patients and families in the room showed no reaction at all.

My heart jolted. I hadn't expected Sonya to be able to choose who could hear her thoughts.

"Dr. Strickland!" Olivia shot to her feet, her finger nearly poking my face. "What exactly are you doing? You know this painkiller is addictive, and you still want to use it? Aren't you just trying to rip us off?!"

Cheryl jumped, too, practically spraying spit in my face. "Exactly! My dad doesn't need that harmful junk. You're the worst doctor I've ever met!"

I forced myself to stay calm and explain it to them.

"The vomiting is caused by acute gastrointestinal spasms. Pain medication can relieve the symptoms immediately and prevent dehydration and shock. It's only for short-term use and won't cause addiction."

However, they didn't listen at all.

The sudden commotion left the other patients and families confused, and they all turned to look.

An older woman asked with concern, "What's going on? Why are you all shouting?"

Olivia immediately turned to her and said angrily, "That nurse said this painkiller is addictive, and if we wait a bit, he'll get better anyway. There's no need to spend the money!"

As soon as she said that, the looks from everyone else in the room changed instantly, shifting from confusion to suspicion and blame.

"Is that true? That sounds unethical…"

"I used pain meds yesterday, too. Don't tell me…"

"Doctors these days will do anything for money…"

The buzzing voices closed in, each word stabbing at my ears.

This was exactly how it had happened in my previous life. Sonya's thoughts turned everyone against me.

Thinking of that, I clenched my fist and deliberately raised my voice.

"Fine. If you insist, we won't use the medication. But if the patient's condition worsens, you'll take full responsibility."

"I'm not afraid of you!" Olivia snapped, waving her hand to shoo me away. "Get out. I don't want to…"

Her words suddenly caught in her throat.

On the bed, Ted began convulsing violently. Vomit burst from his mouth, and immediately after, the heart monitor let out a sharp, piercing alarm.

The anger on Olivia's face froze and turned into pure panic. "Wh-what's happening? Didn't you say he'd get better if we waited?"

Sonya barely finished her last sentence when a set of footsteps sounded behind her.Isaiah, who was supposed to have left, returned with two uniformed police officers.Sonya spun around. The smile on her face froze instantly, and all the color drained from her face.At the same time, I slowly straightened up, completely back to normal."Y-You're not poisoned?" Sonya screamed in disbelief."If I hadn't pushed things a little, you would never have admitted it yourself." I looked at her coldly. In truth, the moment she showed up at the hospital tonight, I already knew. So I played along, pretended to be poisoned, and led her straight into saying everything herself."So what if I admitted it?!" Sonya looked like she had snapped, her eyes wild."You didn't die. That's your luck. But what proof do you have? Security cameras? All they prove is that I talked! They can't prove I actually did anything!""What if we add this?" A cold voice rang out from behind the officers. The crowd

Sonya was fired on the spot, while the troublemaking mother and son slunk away in disgrace. The hospital seemed to return to a temporary calm. The process had been terrifying, but at least the outcome cleared my name.Isaiah spoke with me privately, apologized, and affirmed my professionalism and composure. The looks my colleagues gave me returned to their usual trust, even mixed with a bit of sympathy.Convinced that Sonya's inner voice was no longer a threat, I finally relaxed, and my life began to get back on track. However, I underestimated just how vicious Sonya could be.A few days later, something happened again. That night, I was on the night shift when the ER suddenly received two critically injured car crash victims at the same time. Blood was everywhere, the situation was urgent, and the entire department was running nonstop."Dr. Strickland, Bed Three's blood pressure is dropping fast. Suspected internal bleeding. We need surgery right away!" a nurse shouted as she

As soon as those words were spoken, the scene grew noticeably quieter.Ford's shouting caught in his throat, and Grace even forgot to cry. Both of them stared straight at the tablet.Off in the distance, the smug look on Sonya's face vanished instantly. A flash of panic flickered through her eyes. The next second, the head nurse began operating the tablet and turned the screen toward the onlookers, her voice clear and firm."Everyone, take a look for yourselves. This is the camera at the operating room entrance. The timestamps are very clear. Dr. Strickland only arrived when the surgery was nearly finished. And this is a backup camera angle from inside the operating room. The lead surgeon was Dr. Quinn the entire time, with Dr. Clem providing guidance. You can all see it clearly. Dr. Strickland never entered the operating room at all."The high-definition footage and precise timestamps were the strongest proof possible. On the screen, I truly never appeared during the surgery.T

Isaiah's words were like a bucket of cold water dumped straight over Ford's burning rage.Ford's fist froze midair. The vicious look on his face instantly gave way to shock and confusion. He stared at Isaiah, then at me. "Not her? Then… Then who was it?"Justine stepped forward. "Mr. Stokes, I was the lead surgeon. Dr. Clem was present the entire time, overseeing the procedure. The surveillance footage and time records can all prove that Dr. Strickland has never entered the operating room. She was only responsible for informing you about the operation."Ford's momentum collapsed at once. His arm dropped, and doubt crept onto his face as he muttered, "B-But…"Sonya, who was hidden behind the crowd, turned pale in an instant. Her eyes darted around in panic. But only a few seconds later, her expression settled again, and a familiar voice rang in my ears.[Surveillance footage? We can't see that, anyway.[Dr. Clem is obviously covering for her. There must be something going on betw

With a sharp shout from Conrad Clark, a fellow department head, the ward fell dead silent. John's fist froze halfway through the air.In the next second, Conrad strode to the middle of the room and shoved his phone screen right in front of John's face."Look carefully! The security footage is crystal clear. From the moment Dr. Strickland entered the room to when your mother broke down, she never even touched the bedside table."He suddenly turned his head, his gaze locking onto Sonya, who was shrinking into the corner."But you, Sonya. The cameras clearly show that you deliberately opened the medical chart while things were chaotic!"The moment John heard that, his eyes turned bloodshot as he stared viciously at Sonya."So it was you! I'll kill you!" he roared, spittle spraying across Sonya's face as he clenched his fist and swung toward her."N-No, it wasn't me! This has nothing to do with me…"Sonya, who had never faced anything like this, panicked instantly. She screamed wh

The faint color Roberta had been holding onto drained from her face in an instant. Her lips trembled, and her voice shook so badly that it barely sounded like her own."S-Stomach cancer? Am I really…about to die?"Just then, John came back from paying the bill. When he saw her like this, he rushed over in a panic, his voice cracking. "Mom, what's wrong?"Roberta grabbed his arm tightly, tears streaming down her face."The doctor said I'm in late-stage cancer… There's no hope left… Is that true?"Hearing that, John froze as if struck by lightning. Then he suddenly whipped his head around and glared at me, his eyes bloodshot."What the hell did you say to my mom? Didn't I tell you not to tell her? Are you trying to scare her to death?"Noticing the confused looks around us and realizing that Sonya's thoughts had only been heard by Roberta this time, I forced myself to calm down."Mr. Walker, I didn't say anything. You can ask anyone in this room. From the moment I walked in, I ha
