Wren's POV

"What promise? What are you talking about?"

My voice cracked on the question, and the father's eyes stayed fixed on me, unreadable, like he was deciding how much truth I could handle in one sitting.

"Sit," he said, gesturing toward the chair I had occupied hours earlier. "This isn't a conversation for standing."

I didn't move. "I've been dragged, threatened, and claimed three times over in the last twelve hours. I think I've earned the right to hear this standing up."

Something flickered across his face, approval maybe, though he didn't say so. He walked to the fireplace instead, his back to the room, hands clasped behind him. "Twenty three years ago, your father and I were partners. Not enemies. Not debtor and creditor. Partners."

Damian's head turned sharply. "You never mentioned that."

"There was no reason to, until now." The father's voice stayed even, controlled, though something underneath it had shifted. "We built the foundation of this empire together. Split evenly. Equal shares, equal risk."

"So what happened?" I asked.

He turned to face me, firelight catching the sharp lines of his face. "He got scared. The life we were building required sacrifices he wasn't willing to make. So he took his half of everything, disappeared, and left me to finish building this alone."

"That still doesn't explain a promise," I said.

"I'm getting there." He studied me a long moment before continuing. "Before he left, we made an agreement. If either of our families ever needed protecting, the other would provide it. No matter the cost. Your father sealed it the same way every serious vow in this world gets sealed."

My stomach turned. "Blood."

"Blood," he confirmed. "And an unborn child."

The room went utterly silent. Kane's hand tightened slightly against my wrist, though he said nothing. Adrian's expression sharpened, calculating something I couldn't follow. Damian simply stared at his father like the ground beneath him had shifted.

"What does that mean," I said slowly, "an unborn child?"

The father's eyes softened, just barely, an emotion I couldn't name passing behind them. "It means the day you were born, your father promised you to this family. Not as a debt. As the seal of the agreement itself."

"That's insane," I whispered. "You can't promise a baby to anyone."

"In your world, no," he said. "In ours, it happens more than you'd like to know."

Damian stepped forward, his voice tight. "Are you saying she was always meant to come here? That none of this was actually about money?"

"The money was real," the father said. "But it was never the true debt. Your father used it as an excuse to buy himself more time, hoping I would forget the original promise before he had to honor it." His gaze slid back to me. "He was wrong."

I felt the walls closing in, my pulse pounding in my ears. "So this whole time, everyone thought I was here because of unpaid debt, but really you were just waiting for the excuse to collect on some promise from before I could even talk."

"Yes," he said simply, no apology in his tone.

"That's disgusting."

"That's survival," he corrected. "In this family, promises are the only currency that never loses value."

Kane finally spoke, his voice low and rough beside me. "Does this change anything? The vow, the claim, any of it?"

The father considered the question for a long moment, his eyes moving slowly between his three sons before landing back on me. "It changes everything," he said. "Because now the vow isn't simply about a debt owed. It's about a promise made before she ever had a choice in any of it."

"I still have a choice now," I said, forcing steel into my voice despite the way my hands were shaking. "Whatever agreement you made with my father, I never agreed to any of it."

"That's true," he said, surprising me. "Which is why tonight's vow ceremony will look a little different than my sons originally planned."

Damian's jaw tightened. "Meaning what, exactly?"

The father's eyes locked onto mine, cold and calculating once again. "Meaning she gets a choice after all. One night to decide. Accept the vow willingly, bind herself to this family and everything that comes with it, or walk out that door and never look back, debt and promise forgiven completely."

Hope flickered in my chest for the first time since the warehouse. "You'd really let me leave?"

"I would," he said. "But before you decide, there's one more thing you should know."

"What?"

His expression darkened, the warmth from a moment ago vanishing completely. "The promise your father made wasn't only about protection. It included one more detail he never told anyone outside this room until tonight."

"Which is?"

The father's voice dropped low, final, each word landing like a stone.

"If you walk out that door tonight, the protection this family has quietly provided your father for the last twenty three years disappears with you. And there are people out there who have been waiting a very long time to finally get their hands on him.”

"He doesn't wait for backup when someone he cares about is in danger.""Then we go after him," I said immediately."No," Damian and Adrian said at almost the exact same moment, both turning to look at me with matching expressions of refusal."I'm not asking permission," I said, straightening despite the fear still shaking through me. "He went out there because of me. I'm not sitting in a basement while he gets himself killed."Viktor let out a low, pained laugh despite the blood soaking through his shirt. "She really is her mother's daughter.""Now is not the time," Adrian said sharply, kneeling beside Viktor to examine the wound, his hands steady despite the tension in his voice."There's never going to be a good time," I said. Wern's Pov The silence stretched unbearably long after Damian disappeared through the door, each second dragging like it refused to move forward."He'll be fine," Adrian said, though his voice lacked the certainty the words were meant to carry."You don't actually believe that," I said."No," Adrian admitted. "But saying it out loud felt better than saying nothing at all."I paced the small room, my arms wrapped tightly around myself, trying to steady the tremor running through my hands. "This is my fault," I said. "If I hadn't come here, none of this would be happening.""This isn't about you," Adrian said. "Not really. This started long before you were born, Wren. You just happened to be standing in the middle of it when it finally came due.""That doesn't make me feel better.""I wasn't trying to make you feel better," Adrian said. "I was trying to make you understand."I turned to face him fully, studying the calm mask he wore even now, even with gunfire echoing somewhere above u

Wern's Pov Darkness swallowed the room whole, and for a moment nobody moved."Nobody should panic," Damian said, his voice cutting through the black with surprising calm. "This has happened before. It's probably just the generator.""It's not the generator," Adrian said sharply. "The backup system doesn't fail like this. Not without help."My heart slammed against my ribs. "Someone did this on purpose?""Stay where you are," Kane said, his hand finding my arm in the darkness, fingers wrapping firmly around my wrist. "Don't move until we know what we're dealing with.""That's not exactly comforting," I said, my voice shakier than I wanted it to be."It's not meant to be comforting," Kane said. "It's meant to keep you alive."Footsteps sounded near the hallway outside, quick and controlled, followed by the low murmur of voices I didn't recognize. Damian moved first, positioning himself between me and the door before I even registered him shifting."Guards," Viktor said quietly. "Two, m

Wern's Pov "All of us," Damian said. The words hung in the air longer than they should have, heavy enough that even Viktor seemed to be waiting for someone to take them back. Nobody did."That's not how vows work," I said, my voice unsteady despite my best effort to sound sure of myself. "You can't all just decide to share something like this among yourselves before I even agree.""We're not deciding for you," Adrian said, stepping away from the door for the first time since we entered the room. "We're telling you what's already true.""That's the same thing.""It isn't," Kane said, his eyes never leaving mine. "You still get to say yes or no. We just refuse to pretend one of us is going to walk away quietly once you do."Viktor watched the exchange with an expression that was almost amused, the kind of look a man wears when he has already seen this exact moment play out before and knows exactly how it ends. "This is precisely why the vow exists," he said. "To settle what three stubb

Viktor watched me with the same unreadable calm he had carried since the moment he walked into the room, not even a flicker of guilt crossing his face."I'm not the one deciding his fate," Viktor said. " But you are.""That's not fair and you know it," I said, almost immediately."Fair has nothing to do with survival." Viktor turned toward the fireplace, his voice dropping lower, almost thoughtful. "Your father understood that once. It seems the lesson never reached you."Damian stepped closer to me, his shoulder brushing mine. "Whatever you decide tonight," Damian said quietly, "you decide it as someone who already belongs to this house."Kane's jaw was tight, his eyes locked on his father with something close to anger simmering beneath the surface. "She's not a bargaining chip," Kane said. "She's mine to protect, vow or no vow."Adria
