Diana's POV

I stood in the center of Bianca’s opulent bedroom, the ivory lace gown draped over my arms like a heavy, silken shroud. The fabric was cold—colder than it had any right to be—and the thousands of hand-stitched seed pearls felt like tiny, frozen tears against my skin.

Across the room, Bianca was a whirlwind of frantic, jagged motion, her shadow dancing like a specter against the cold stone. She had discarded her silk finery, pulling on a sturdy traveling tunic and heavy wool trousers I recognized as my own—stolen from the drying racks weeks ago. She didn't look like a bride. She looked like a thief preparing to vanish into the mist.

"I can't do this, Bianca," I whispered, the words catching in a throat that felt like it was closing up. "This isn't just a lie. This is high treason. If Alpha Thorne realizes I’m not you, he won't just kill me. He’ll use my bones to bridge the gap between our packs."

Bianca stopped, a leather satchel of stolen jewelry slung over her shoulder. She turned, her eyes flashing with a predatory light that made my stomach heave. "He lives in a tomb, Diana. He hasn't looked a woman in the eye since the fire. He wants a Vane to occupy the space beside him so he can feel powerful again. You are a Vane. You have the scent, you have the height, and god knows you have the habit of being silent and obedient. You’re perfect for the role."

"And the poison?" I asked, my voice trembling. "The foxglove you stole from my cabinet? You said you were going to use it."

"I was," she said, a cruel smirk touching her lips as she checked the servant’s passage behind the heavy velvet tapestry. "But why should I do the dirty work when I can let the 'Monster of Thorne Manor' rot in his own misery? If I'm gone, my father can't use me as a pawn. And if you’re there, Thorne stays satisfied long enough for me to reach the coast."

She stepped closer, her voice dropping to a hiss. "But if you speak up—if you tell the guards I’ve fled—I will ensure my father knows it was your idea. I will tell him you convinced me to run away. I’ll tell him you’ve been skimming the silver-root and nightshade for months. Who do you think the pack will execute first? The Alpha’s daughter, or the bastard niece who plays with poisons?"

The threat was a physical blow. I looked at the gown again. It was a masterpiece of deception.

Thud. Thud. Thud.

The sound of heavy, rhythmic footsteps began to vibrate through the floorboards. It wasn't the clumsy tread of our pack warriors. It was the synchronized, lethal march of the Amberclaw Shadow Guards.

"They’re in the foyer," Bianca whispered, her face going pale. "Put it on. Now!"

With shaking hands, I began to unbutton my wool dress. My skin felt pebbled with gooseflesh as the night air hit me. I stepped into the layers of silk and lace, the weight of the gown nearly pulling me to my knees. Bianca worked with frantic speed behind me, zipping the spine of the dress and shoving my feet into the white satin heels.

Then came the veil.

"Put it on. Now!" Bianca commanded. She shoved the heavy, three-tiered lace veil over my head. The world disappeared into a blur of cream mesh.

It was a heavy, three-tiered monstrosity of antique lace, weighted at the edges with silver thread. The room became a blur of cream and shadow, my vision obscured by the intricate floral patterns of the mesh. I felt like I was being buried alive.

"Stay here. Don't speak until you're in the carriage. Give me ten minutes to reach the tree line." she said.

The tapestry rustled, and she was gone.

I stood paralyzed, a ghost in a stolen dress. But as the seconds ticked by, panic overrode my fear of Bianca. If I let her escape with that poison, she might still kill him later, or the pack would be razed when the lie was uncovered. I couldn't just stand there.

"Bianca!" my uncle’s voice boomed. He sounded drunk—on scotch, on fear, or perhaps both. "The enforcers are losing patience. They say the moon is crossing the meridian. If you aren't at the altar by midnight, they’re authorized to take the debt in blood."

I hiked up the heavy skirts of the gown and bolted. I didn't go for the door; I followed her through the servant’s passage, out into the biting chill of the night.

Diana's POVThe heavy iron bolt within my door didn't just snap this time; it remained withdrawn, a hollow silence that felt more like a summons to an execution than a gesture of freedom."The Alpha is waiting," a guard’s voice rasped from the shadows of the hallway.I smoothed the skirts of the charcoal-colored silk gown Silas had left for me—a somber, high-collared garment of heavy weave that made me feel as though I were already draped in mourning. I did not reach for the lace veil. The rule was absolute: he dwelt in the dark. A veil would only make me a blind target in this kingdom of ghosts.I followed the guard through the labyrinth of the North Wing. The manor was a hushed cathedral of shadow, lit only by the faint, sickly pulse of foxfire set into the baseboards, tracking our movement like glowing eyes. We reached a set of towering obsidian doors. They swung open on silent, greased hinges, revealing a dining hall so vast the vaulted ceiling was swallowed by the gloom. In the c

Diana's POV I hadn't slept. I spent the night huddled in a silk robe that felt like cold water against my skin, watching the moon crawl across the reinforced glass of my windows. Every few hours, the muffled sounds of agony would drift through the marble wall—a low groan, the sharp shatter of glass, or that terrifying, wet cough. At dawn, the heavy iron bolt within my door withdrew with a hollow, resonant thud. The great oak panels groaned on their hinges, swinging inward as if moved by an invisible hand, the sound echoing through the cold morning silence like a predatory sigh. I stood by the window, my back stiff, as a man st

Diana's POVThe heavy iron doors of the chapel groaned shut behind me, the sound echoing like a guillotine blade hitting the block. I wasn’t walked to my new quarters; I was marched. Two Shadow Guards flanked me, their movements as precise and cold as the high-tech fortress that housed them. The transition from the ancient, rotting chapel to the heart of Thorne Manor offered no relief, only a different kind of dread. The air grew heavy and stagnant, thick with the scent of burning ambergris and the cold, metallic tang of old blood. We moved through vaulted corridors of polished obsidian and rib-like arches of blackened iron, past narrow lancet windows that looked out onto the jagged, moonlit teeth of the Amberclaw mountains. Finally, we reached a set of massive, iron-bound oak doors at the end of the North Wing, carved with weeping saints. One of the guards pressed a signet ring into a hidden groove in the stone; the heavy bolts groaned, and the doors swung inward with a long, low ras

Diana's POVThe interior of the carriage was as cold and sterile as a tomb, smelling of despair, expensive velvet, and the lingering, suffocating scent of my own terror. I sat huddled against the far door, the ruined ivory lace of the gown feeling like a leaden weight. Every time I tried to speak—to beg the guards one last time to look at the herb-stains on my skin, to see the callouses that didn't belong to a pampered princess—the man in the front would growl a warning that made the very air in the carriage vibrate. They didn't want the truth. They wanted a body to fill a requirement. We crossed the border into Amberclaw territory under the oppressive, judgmental glare of a blood moon. The gates of Thorne Manor didn't just open; they hissed apart—massive slabs of obsidian-veined stone reinforced with shimmering steel fences. This wasn't a home. It was an isolated fortress built of rough-hewn grey stone, its towers towering over the misty valley. It designed to keep the world out, or

Diana's POVThe hem of the ivory gown was no longer pristine. It snagged on brambles and soaked up the dark, freezing mud of the Blackwood forest as I lunged through the underbrush. The heavy veil had been tossed back over my shoulders, fluttering behind me like the broken wings of a moth—a white beacon of treason against the obsidian trees."Bianca! Stop!" I screamed, my lungs burning from the icy night air. "You can’t do this! If you disappear, they’ll kill everyone! Uncle Alaric, the pack... me!"Ahead of me, a flash of a dark traveling cloak disappeared behind a cluster of ancient hemlocks. Bianca was faster, fueled by a selfish adrenaline I couldn't match. She had always been the predator, and I, the healer who followed behind to mend what she broke."Go back, Diana!" her voice floated through the trees, ghostly and distant. "Tell them I drowned in the ravine! Tell them I was taken by a rogue! Just let me go!""I can’t lie for you anymore!" I tripped over a gnarled root, the sati
