Chapter 5: The Poisoned Well

The wood of the door groaned under Gregory Bellweather’s fist, a sound like a gavel striking a death sentence. Adrian’s heart was no longer just hammering; it was a frantic, trapped thing clawing at his ribs. He looked at Theodore, who stood in the center of the room with a terrifying, calm grace, casually buttoning his charcoal shirt as if the world wasn't ending outside the frame of the door.

"The dressing room," Adrian hissed, his voice a jagged whisper. "Go. Now."

Theodore’s eyes flickered with a dark, amused spark. "You’re really going to hide me like a cheap affair, Adrian? After everything we just did?"

"Theo, if he sees you, the merger is the least of our problems. My father will literally kill us both. Move!"

Theodore leaned in, his scent—now mixed with the salt and musk of their shared hours—filling Adrian’s head one last time. He stole a quick, bruising kiss that tasted of possession. "This is going to cost you, sweetheart. Remember that."

With a silent tread, Theodore vanished into the walk-in dressing room, the heavy door clicking shut just as Adrian scrambled to the main entrance. He took a shuddering breath, smoothed his hair with trembling fingers, and turned the key.

Gregory Bellweather practically fell into the room. The man looked like he’d aged a decade in the last three hours. His tie was loose, and his face was a sickly shade of gray.

"God, Adrian! Why was the door locked? I’ve been shouting for five minutes!"

"I... I take a sleeping pill sometimes, Gregory. I was dead to the world," Adrian lied, his voice sounding thin to his own ears. "What’s going on? You said something about a breach?"

Gregory pushed past him, pacing the length of the opulent suite. "It’s a bloodbath. Someone leaked the internal audits of the Hollingsworth shipping funds to the federal regulators. The Feds are freezing everything. They’re claiming the 'Asset Realignment' clause in the merger was a front for money laundering."

Adrian felt the floor tilt. "Money laundering? That’s insane. My father would never—"

"Your father is a lot of things, Adrian, but he isn't stupid," Gregory snapped, stopping to stare out the window at the dark estate grounds. "But whoever leaked this knew exactly where the skeletons were buried. The Wexford shares are tanking in response, and Arthur Wexford is currently in the study screaming about a breach of contract. We’re ruined. If we can't prove this was a setup by the end of the week, the Hollingsworth name is worth less than the paper it’s printed on."

"Who would do that?" Adrian asked, his gaze drifting involuntarily toward the dressing room door. "Who has that kind of access?"

"That’s what we’re trying to find out. Your father wants you downstairs. Now. He’s calling in Simon Fairmont."

Adrian stiffened. "Fairmont? The 'Fixer'? If we’re calling him, we’re already in the dirt."

"We’re deeper than the dirt, kid. We’re in the grave. Get dressed. Ten minutes."

Gregory vanished as quickly as he’d arrived, his footsteps echoing down the hallway. The silence that followed was heavy, suffocating. A moment later, the dressing room door swung open. Theodore stepped out, his expression unreadable, his eyes fixed on Adrian’s pale face.

"Federal investigation," Theodore mused, his voice a low, dangerous hum. "That’s a bold move."

"Did you do it?" Adrian’s voice was a whip-crack in the quiet room. "Is this part of the 'ruining me' plan, Theo? You wait until I’m in your bed and then you pull the trigger on my father’s life's work?"

Theodore walked toward him, his presence narrowing the world down to the two of them. He stopped inches away, his heat a mocking reminder of the intimacy they’d just shared. "If I were going to destroy your father, Adrian, I wouldn't need the Feds to do my dirty work. I’d do it with my own hands. Besides, I lose money if this merger dies. A lot of it."

"Then who?"

"Maybe you should ask your father what he’s been hiding in those offshore accounts," Theodore said, reaching out to brush a stray hair from Adrian’s forehead. His touch was lingering, almost tender, which made it all the more terrifying. "Go on. Go play the loyal son. See what the 'Fixer' has to say."

The breakfast room at Blackwood Manor felt more like a war room. The smell of expensive coffee and smoked bacon was nauseatingly normal against the backdrop of the shouting coming from the head of the table.

Lawrence Hollingsworth looked like a ghost. Across from him, Arthur Wexford was red-faced, slamming a fist onto the mahogany.

"You promised me a clean slate, Lawrence! This is a goddamn federal sting!"

"I didn't know!" Lawrence roared back. "Someone fed them false data!"

The doors opened, and a man in a razor-sharp charcoal suit stepped in. Simon Fairmont didn't look like a lawyer; he looked like a hitman who happened to carry a briefcase. He gave a curt nod to the room, his eyes lingering on Adrian for a fraction of a second too long.

"Gentlemen," Simon said, his voice like ice water. "Let’s skip the theatrics. I’ve spent the last two hours tracing the digital footprint of the leak. It didn't come from the outside."

The table went silent. Adrian felt a chill crawl up his spine.

"What do you mean, not from the outside?" Arthur Wexford demanded.

"The documents were uploaded from a terminal within the Hollingsworth private network," Simon explained, opening a folder and sliding a printout across the table. "Specifically, from a device registered to a family member. We have a whistleblower in the inner circle."

Lawrence turned his gaze toward Adrian, his eyes wide with a mixture of shock and burgeoning rage. "Adrian? You were in London last month. You had access to the server."

"Dad, you can't be serious," Adrian said, his heart dropping into his stomach. "I spent the whole month trying to finalize the shipping routes. Why would I destroy my own inheritance?"

"Maybe because you’ve always hated the way I run things," Lawrence muttered, his voice shaking.

"Or maybe," Theodore’s voice cut through the tension, smooth and lethal as he stepped into the room, "we should look at who stands to gain from a lower valuation of the Hollingsworth assets. If the company is under investigation, the price drops. Someone could buy the whole thing for pennies on the dollar."

Simon Fairmont smiled, a thin, predatory expression. "Mr. Wexford is right. And interestingly enough, the leak coincided with a series of short-sell orders on Hollingsworth stock. Orders placed through a shell company called 'Sandalwood Holdings'."

Adrian’s breath caught. Sandalwood. The scent that followed Theodore everywhere. He looked at Theodore, but the man was perfectly composed, leaning against the sideboard with a cup of coffee.

"I’ll look into it," Simon said, snapping his briefcase shut. "In the meantime, I suggest no one leaves the estate. The Feds will be here by noon to take statements."

The meeting broke up in a flurry of hushed, angry whispers. Adrian felt Theodore’s eyes on him the entire time, a heavy weight that he couldn't shake. As the others filed out to the study, Adrian took a detour. He knew Blackwood Manor better than most; he’d spent summers here as a boy. He knew where Arthur Wexford—and now Theodore—kept their private records.

He slipped into the East Wing, his heart racing. He reached Theodore’s private study, a room filled with the scent of old paper and that same, maddening sandalwood. The door was unlocked.

Adrian didn't know what he was looking for until he saw it. On the desk, half-hidden under a stack of merger drafts, was a small, black leather-bound ledger. It looked out of place among the high-tech monitors and sleek office supplies.

He opened it, his fingers fumbling.

It wasn't a business ledger. It was a hit list. Page after page of Hollingsworth assets, marked not for "realignment," but for total liquidation. He saw his father’s name at the top of a column titled 'Liability Erasure.' But it was the final page that broke him.

A list of dates. The dates Adrian had been in London five years ago. And next to them, a series of payments made to private investigators. Theodore hadn't just been a "summer fling." He’d been tracking Adrian even then.

But the most damning part was the bottom line. 'Final Goal: Total Bankrupting of L.H. - Estimated Completion: Quarter 3.'

Theodore wasn't trying to merge with the Hollingsworths. He was trying to erase them from existence. Every touch, every kiss, every word whispered in the dark of the Gold Suite had been a distraction while he tightened the noose around Adrian’s neck.

"You really should have stayed at breakfast, sweetheart. The omelets were actually decent."

Adrian spun around, the ledger clutched to his chest. Theodore was standing in the doorway, the light from the hallway silhouetting his broad frame. He didn't look angry. He looked disappointed, like a teacher catching a favorite student in a lie.

"You’re sick," Adrian whispered, his voice cracking with a devastating mix of betrayal and lingering desire. "You planned this. All of it. The merger, the leak, the Sandalwood shell company... you’re not just taking the company. You’re taking everything. Why? Because I left you in London?"

Theodore stepped into the room, closing the door behind him with a slow, deliberate click. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, folded piece of paper—the other half of the ledger page Adrian was holding.

"You think this is about a broken heart, Adrian? You really are as vain as your father," Theodore said, his voice dropping to a low, gravelly register. He walked toward Adrian, his presence overwhelming the small space. "This isn't about revenge for a summer fling. This is about justice for what your father did to mine thirty years ago. He didn't build the Hollingsworth legacy; he stole it from the Wexfords."

He stopped right in front of Adrian, his hand reaching out to grip Adrian’s jaw, forcing him to look up. His eyes were cold, dark, and utterly devoid of the warmth they’d held just hours before.

"And as for you," Theodore murmured, his thumb tracing the line of Adrian’s lip, "you were just the most delicious part of the collateral damage."

Adrian tried to pull away, but Theodore’s grip was like iron. He leaned in, his breath hot against Adrian’s ear.

"Did you find what you were looking for, brother?" Theodore whispered, the word 'brother' dripping with a mocking, cruel irony that suggested secrets far deeper than a simple corporate takeover. "Because now that you know the truth, I can't let you leave this room."

His lungs felt too small for the amount of air he was trying to pull in. Theodore’s scent—that maddening mix of expensive sandalwood and something raw—still hung in the air, mocking him.He looked down at his hands. They were still shaking. With a frustrated hiss, he shoved them into his pockets and forced himself to move. He couldn't go back to the ballroom yet. He couldn't face the flashes of the cameras or his father’s expectant, shark-like grin.He slipped out of the side exit, moving through the dimly lit service corridor until he reached the heavy, iron-bound doors of the Hollingsworth library. It was the only room in the manor that felt like it belonged to him, not the 'legacy.'He swung the doors open and didn't bother turning on the main lights. The amber glow from the firepla

He stared into the vanity mirror, his fingers trembling slightly as he adjusted his onyx cufflinks. The reflection staring back was a masterpiece of old-money refinement, but behind the eyes, there was only a simmering, breathless dread."You’re overthinking the tie, Adrian. It’s perfect. You’re perfect. Now, let’s go before the press starts wondering if the groom’s son has cold feet on behalf of his father."Adrian didn't turn around. He could see Lawrence Redfield’s reflection leaning against the doorframe, checking his gold watch with a frown."It’s not my wedding, Dad. It’s a merger with a guest list," Adrian said, his voice flat."Same thing in our world, kid. You know that. Just keep that 'Hollingsworth charm' switched on for another three hours. Can you do that for me?"Adrian finally turned, his expression a mask of bored in
