LOGINERIC:
I spent long minutes preparing the kind of meal that could make the air feel thick with love. A pair of juicy, pan-seared steaks rested beside mounds of velvety mashed potatoes laced with truffle oil, their aroma melting into the scent of roasted garlic and butter. Sauted asparagus glistened with olive oil and a sprinkle of Parmesan, while towers of sliced mozzarella and ripe tomatoes sat like little artworks, drizzled with dark balsamic glaze. Two glasses of red wine, half full, still breathing, completed the homely yet luxurious feast. Turning from the table, I jolted… “Dear me,” I gasped, regaining my breath. Leonard stood silently behind me. I hadn’t noticed his presence until then. God knows how long he’d been there, watching me arrange dish after dish. “Perfect timing.” I motioned to a chair. He ignored it and chose a different seat. Great. He sat still, either stunned by the spread or waiting for me to serve him. I did so gladly, spooning small portions onto a plate for myself too. With a spoon in hand and the plate before him, he just stared… at the food, at nothing. I recognised that look. He was debating if this was a trap: poisoned food or a romantic hex. “Go on,” I said, smiling as our eyes met. “It is delicious. I promise.” He took a spoonful, chewed, then paused. “How is it?” I asked, already wearing a proud grin. He didn’t need to answer. That pause was the silence of someone pleasantly betrayed by their taste buds. Of course, it was good. I spent all my savings at an English culinary institution. “Want some more?” I offered before he could answer. Leonard kept chewing, then gave the smallest nod, as if not to admit I’d won. I laughed. But served him to his fill. Dinner went great. Later, Leonard retired to a couch. I did the dishes, took a cold shower, and came back for dessert… a cup of ice cream I had stashed earlier in the refrigerator. He was still glued to his tablet. I sat across from him, ice cream in hand, stealing a glance every few seconds. His focus was captivating—lashes blinking rhythmically, forehead creased slightly, fingers tapping in sync with his thoughts. Time felt slower around him. I know saying Leonard is handsome would sound so boring from repetition, but mehn, that man makes me throb. My mind was running through a thousand things he could do to me if… Until he caught me staring. I quickly leaned back and shovelled a spoonful of ice cream into my mouth. “What are you doing?” he asked, his voice tinged with surprise and something else I couldn’t place. “Nothing,” I shrugged, pretending to focus on my ice cream. “You just ate an ice cream, Erica,” he said more firmly, lowering the tablet. I glanced at the cup, then at him, still confused. “Oh,” I smiled, thinking I’d figured out the issue. “I’ve got a few more cups in the fridge. Want one?” “What?” His reaction stunned me. That flicker of surprise turned to shock. Before I could lift another spoonful, he lunged forward, snatched both the cup and spoon from me, splashing cream all over me. “What the hell, Leonard?!” He froze. I wasn’t having it. “Why did you do that? Is eating ice cream against your house rules?!” He didn’t move. “You could’ve just said so instead of making a mess!” Then, his voice came softly. “Are you…okay?” “I should be asking you that. Are you okay, Leonard?” “Erica,” he said even gentler, “do you really feel okay?” “No. I don’t! I am mad. You just ruined my dessert!” I stormed off to the fridge, grabbed another cup, and stomped upstairs. “You can finish that one!’ I shouted behind me. Fvcking Leonard. Up in my room, I devoured the ice cream like a punishment—though I wasn’t sure who I was punishing. When the fury overflowed, I called Lucas. “Maybe that’s just his way of being overbearing,” Lucas said. “What’s so wrong about eating ice cream in his house?” “There might be a bad story behind it.” “Well, I’m going to flood this house with every dâmn flavour I can find.” I lay awake imagining his living room stacked with melting cups of vengeance. Overbearing Leonard? He’d learn I could outdo him. “Eric!” Erica’s voice called from the hallway the next morning. Shît! I’d fallen asleep on last night’s rage. “Eric!” I opened the door. She was pale and panting. “Is something wrong?” I asked. “Did you…” she struggled. Her eyes fell on my bed. On the empty cup of ice cream that had slept beside me. “Did you have that?” she asked, panic rising. “Can you eat an ice cream?” Right. Not in Leonard’s presence. “You may want to sit,” I said. “I can’t eat ice cream,” she blurted, heart racing. “I don’t understand.” “I am allergic to milk. I can’t eat cream.” The memory of last night rewound in slow horror. “Shît!” “Did Mr. Hays see that?” she asked. “And the mess in the living room, who made that?” Fvcking Eric. “Leonard…” I mumbled, “he tried to stop me. I thought he was being controlling.” “This is not good.” No, it isn’t. Leonard is too observant. Calculative. Allergies leave no tighter ends—only clues. We are screwed! “What should we do?” I asked. “This is my fault.” It was. Erica had been leaving out too much information. No pictures to help me identify people, now this—an allergy she forgot to mention? What exactly is her plan? To run back to Nathan? This is why I can’t stand women in charge. So many loose ends. But this isn’t the time to shame her. “I think we should call Lucas,” I suggested. Because honestly? I’m as lost as she is. My brain doesn’t work under pressure, and now, I was drowning in it. Only Lucas could think on our behalf. My call to Lucas was still ringing when a knock sounded on the door. “Erica!” Leonard called. My heart plummeted. Erica’s spine locked. And we turned in the same breath…staring at the door that was about to burst open from Leonard’s knock.LEONARD: Dropping my jacket on another couch, I sat on the glass table in front of Eric, taking in his radiant face. It was still unbelievable how a man could be so beautiful. With naturally carved-sleek eyebrows, long lashes, full lips, and flawless cheeks…Eric could easily pass a woman. He did, clearly. Even as I had witnessed the thing between his legs, I still swore to myself that he was a woman. When I thought of it, Bernard was the one who had fallen for the wrong gender. He was the gay one, not me. Because all I did was fall for the woman in front of me, while he fell for a woman… claiming she was a man. Okay. I’m also becoming senseless. I lifted my hand to his hair, brushing the fallen strands from his face. Though he kept it short, it was still long enough to give him a feminine edge. He shifted at my touch, stretching and parting his lips slightly. The attraction came at once. The force—that pull to those lips…magnetised my reasoning. Before I could stop myself, I lea
LEONARD: ‘Explain things to Bernard?’ Eric thinks talking to Bernard would be cheap? And what exactly does he intend to say? Ask him to forget all they had because he is in love with his friend? Has Eric always been a dummy, or is he refusing to see the mess he’s made? He’s pulled Bernard and me into a suffocating triangle, forcing us to meet each other with racing hearts for the first time. I arrived at Vinelight first, as I wanted. Ordered food I knew neither Bernard nor I would touch. He wouldn’t have the appetite, and me…I wouldn’t dare fill up the space that was meant for the food waiting for me in the office. Exactly. I would be claiming that lunchbox as soon as I get back. Bernard slid into the chair opposite me, clearly avoiding my eyes. “You don’t look good, man,” I said. He looked worse than Eric. I had never seen him like this—It was disturbing. “And you’re healthy,” he shot back. “I suppose the whole backstab was meant for me.” “Don’t be sassy.” “I look like a w
LEONARD: The instruction was to grant his requests, but not let him leave the hotel. I didn’t want him out, not only to protect him from hungry reporters but to prevent this exact kind of collapse: him pulling me into a whirlpool of anxiety and shock. My hotel management would pay for putting me in this state of helplessness and breathlessness. “Should I let him in?” Tracey asked. He was already inside, slipping his cap from his head. Eric stood behind Tracey, and even as I looked past her, she hadn’t noticed. I couldn’t blame her. Eric looked like a walking ghost. With his dull eyes, pale lips and a too-thin frame, he was hardly visible. He wore a full male outfit—simple, casual—but disarmingly beautiful: a soft linen shirt with sleeves slightly rolled. The fabric clung just enough to hint at his slender body without flaunting it. Nothing about him screamed for attention, yet I found him seductive. Even the slim leather bracelet at his wrist seemed to whisper something persona
LEONARD: Bernard slipped away to his bedroom without us noticing. By the time Jimmy and I finished outlining how the investigation would begin, Bernard was already gone. It was better that way. I still hadn’t decided how to process everything about him and Eric, and I knew he was struggling too. It was best that we take our time in approaching that chapter. Jimmy, on the other hand, provided a perfect lead. He said Erica had met a woman during their trip. Something about the woman seemed off—he couldn’t place it, but with the chaos unravelling now, he believed she was the right place to start. “You should go back to Panila,” I said. The company trip had covered several cities in the country, Panila included. That was where Erica met the woman—and also where I’d taken Eric from. Panila was the hole worth digging. Jimmy drove me home, then went off to prepare for what would be a long investigation. The reporters had finally cleared from my gates. But online clips showed that they
LEONARD: I pulled up to the building, rode the elevator, and knocked as if I’d rented the whole apartment for Eric and his crew. I knew Erica would be inside…she’d have left the office with Jimmy the moment news about our wedding escalated, except she had come straight to this crib. The nerd opened the door and immediately slumped to the floor in shock. This is worse than I thought—he urgently needs rejuvenation. It’s becoming abnormal for a man to be so fragile. I wasn’t wrong. Erica stood behind the couch, taking in the scene with a shaky body. “Eric!” I called into the room, ignoring both of them. “Eric!” A door creaked, and Eric stepped out. He was still in the gown, eyes puffy, skinnier than he had been minutes ago. He looked pale, like he could collapse at any moment. My heart constricted at the sight. Yet, I coldly crossed the room to him. His eyes found mine. He opened his mouth to speak, closed it again. I hesitated, wondering whether to ask if he needed time to grab a
LEONARD: I couldn’t believe I was willing to hear him out. Maybe I needed a conviction. Except I wasn’t sure why. Because no matter what he said, it wouldn’t make him a real woman. I still wouldn’t own him. “Talk then,” I repeated when he said nothing but sob. “I didn’t mean to lie to you. To deceive you. It was a callous thing to do. I’m sorry.” “That’s it?” I asked after a few seconds of silence. “I…” He clasped his fingers together. “I was supposed to disappear before you found out about us. You weren’t meant to know. But the mission kept taking wild turns, forcing me to stay.” “What mission?” “About Erica and me. About our birth history.” “What about it?” “We…are biologically related.” Shit. They’re twins. Identically created. Not that I hadn’t suspected Lucia might be Erica’s sibling…but hearing it confirmed still disappointed me. I truly disliked the Gerux family. And now that I… Wait. What? What the hell was that impossible thought? “Leonard…” “What’s your name?”
