COURTNEY

He now kills anyhow. Oh, I forgot—he is the Alpha, and in the brutal hierarchy of our world, an Alpha is untouchable. The law of the packs protects him, the elders bow to him, and blood on his hands is just another Tuesday afternoon.

My hands trembled so violently I could barely grasp my cell phone. I immediately dialed Lucas’s number. Ring... ring... ring...

He did not answer.

Panic surged through my chest, hot and suffocating. I am not in a romantic relationship with Lucas, but he had only ever shown me kindness, helped me build my hospital, and stood by my side when no one else would. I could not bear the thought of him going down—or losing everything—all because of me.

Without thinking twice, I grabbed my coat, rushed out of the hospital, and got into my car.

"Drive me to the Silver Fang Pack," I ordered my driver, my voice strained and frantic.

The journey was agonizing. As we crossed the border into Lucas’s territory, the devastation from Diego’s recent attack was sickeningly apparent. Burned-out storefronts, shattered glass, and broken fences lined the streets. But what terrified me the most were the crude, threatening messages painted in heavy red spray paint across the remaining walls.

TELL COURTNEY TO RETURN HOME.

That was the caption written in bold, menacing letters across every building. And to make it worse, large, color-printed pictures of my face—pulled from my hospital profile—were pasted right beside the warnings like a wanted poster.

"Dr. Courtney, this place is not safe for you!" my driver said, slamming on the brakes as he looked out the window at the hostile, angry crowds roaming the streets. "They blame you for what Alpha Diego did! We have to turn back right now!"

"No," I said, shaking my head as tears pricked my eyes. "I need to see Lucas. He must be going through so much, and it's all my fault."

I couldn't let my driver risk his life any further, so I told him to pull down a quiet, tree-lined side lane near the back of the pack lands. From there, using the local knowledge of the terrain I remembered from years past, I pulled up the hood of my coat and slipped out of the vehicle.

Somehow, through sheer adrenaline and careful hiding, I was able to sneak past the pack patrols, weaving through alleys until I reached Lucas’s personal estate.

When I slipped through the back gate, my heart broke all over again. The grand house was a complete mess. Windows were shattered, the front doors were hanging off their hinges, and broken glass and debris littered the porch. Furniture had been tossed outside, and the entire place looked like it had been ransacked by rioters.

"Lucas...?" I whispered, stepping cautiously through the broken doorway into the dark, quiet foyer.

Before I could take another step, a heavy shadow detached itself from the corridor. Then another.

Shouts erupted from behind me. "There she is! That's the doctor woman! That's Courtney!"

I spun around, my breath catching in my throat. A mob of angry, desperate pack members, displaced and grieving from the attack, surrounded the entrance. Their eyes glowed with amber fury, their faces twisted with rage and grief. They didn't see an innocent doctor; they saw the catalyst of their nightmare.

"It’s because of her that the Alpha brought war to our doorstep!" a burly wolf snarled, stepping forward with his fists clenched. "Get her!"

Before I could even scream, the mob surged forward and attacked me.

  • WHEN THE LUNA WALKS AWAY   NO MORE KISSES

COURTNEY"Not in this life, Diego. I will never return to you!" I screamed into the receiver, my voice raw and cracking with pure venom. As I was about to stab my thumb against the screen to end the call, a sudden, frantic noise on the other end froze the breath in my lungs. It wasn't Diego’s voice anymore."Courtney? Oh, dear child, please..."A chorus of terrified, weeping voices broke through the speaker. My heart stopped. It was the nuns from the Monastery of Wolves—the sacred sanctuary where I had sought refuge and peace years ago."Mother General Kim?" I choked out, tears instantly blinding my eyes as I stared at the smoking ashes of the hospital in front of me. "Mother, what is happening? Where are you?""We are locked in the courtyard of the monastery," Mother General Kim sobbed, her fragile voice trembling violently. "Alpha Diego... he came with his entire army. He arrested all of us. He claimed we harbored you, that we taught you defiance and made you leave him. Oh, child...

  • WHEN THE LUNA WALKS AWAY   THE KISS

COURTNEYThe soft hum of the vehicle’s engine was the only sound accompanying us as we drove away from the safehouse. Lucas had insisted on a detour, refusing to tell me where we were heading."With blindfolds on?" I asked, raising an eyebrow as he held up a dark silk cloth in the dim light of the back seat. "Lucas, what are you planning?""Trust me, Courtney," he said softly, a gentle, reassuring smile touching his lips. "Just keep your eyes closed for a few more minutes. Please?"I let out a soft sigh, nodding my head. I closed my eyes tightly, and I felt the smooth, cool fabric wrap around my head, plunging me into absolute darkness. I didn't resist. After everything we had been through—the betrayal, the prison cell, the pills, the near-death experience—trusting Lucas felt like the only safe harbor left in the world. For a long while, I sat in silence, feeling the rhythmic motion of the car as it turned corners and climbed a slight hill. Then, as the vehicle finally came to a smoot

  • WHEN THE LUNA WALKS AWAY   SON OF A GUN

COURTNEYI blinked rapidly, trying to clear the heavy fog from my mind. The beeping of the heart monitor beside the bed sounded steady, clean, and entirely different from the oppressive, silent tension of Diego's mansion."Lucas...?" I whispered, my voice sounding weak and scratchy as my throat burned from the pill overdose. "Where am I? How did I get here?"Lucas leaned in closer, gently brushing a stray lock of hair away from my forehead. His amber eyes were filled with an intense mixture of relief and lingering terror."You're in a secure medical safehouse connected to the outer edge of my territory," Lucas answered softly, his thumb rubbing soothingly against the back of my hand. "You're safe now, Courtney. Just breathe."Memories of the past twenty-four hours came rushing back in a chaotic, agonizing wave—the police cell, Diego throwing my sick son onto the filthy concrete, my humiliating descent to my knees to beg for mercy, the broken glass in Diego's bedroom, and the handful o

  • WHEN THE LUNA WALKS AWAY   BLEEDING

COURTNEYThe heavy iron gates of the grand estate parted, and the familiar, looming architecture of the mansion rose before us. Stepping out of the vehicle, I realized the house had not changed at all. Everything remained exactly the same as it was ten years ago, frozen in time like a monument to my past captivity.I hurried to carry Bryan inside, rushing him to a comfortable bed while pack doctors were immediately summoned to hook him back up to proper monitoring equipment and stabilized oxygen. Once my son was resting safely, I picked up my small duffel bag and turned toward the familiar hallway leading to the guest wing."Where do you think you're going?" Diego’s deep, commanding voice stopped me in my tracks.I froze, turning around to face him as he stood leaning against the doorframe of the master suite, his hands tucked casually into his pockets."I'm going to my room," I murmured quietly, avoiding his intense gaze."You are sharing a room with me," he said, leaving no room for

  • WHEN THE LUNA WALKS AWAY   RETURNED

COURTNEYThe heavy metal door of the police cell slammed shut behind me with a chilling, metallic echo. I was taken away by the police, stripped of my white coat, my dignity, and my freedom, and thrown onto the cold concrete floor of a dark, damp holding cell.I uttered no words. I didn't scream, I didn't beg the guards, and I didn't shed a tear. My body felt numb, hollowed out by the sheer weight of the nightmare unfolding around me. But through the fog of exhaustion and defeat, one thing remained fiercely certain in my mind: I am not returning to Diego. I would rather rot in this concrete cage than crawl back to his bed."Prisoner in cell four! Your family is here to see you," a gruff police officer barked, rattling the iron bars with his baton.I sat up slowly, staring into the dark corner. "I have no family," I replied flatly, my voice hoarse.A few minutes later, heavy footsteps echoed down the concrete hallway. The officer unlocked the cell door and swung it open. Standing in th

  • WHEN THE LUNA WALKS AWAY   LOCKED UP

COURTNEYI don't want to go back to Diego. I couldn't. The mere thought of returning to that cold, loveless cage made my skin crawl and my chest tighten with suffocation. I ignored the nurse's sharp words, turned on my heel, and headed straight to my house. As I sat alone in the quiet darkness of my living room, my mind spun out of control. Maybe I should just leave everything behind, I thought, tears burning my eyes. Maybe I should go back to the Monastery of Wolves, take up my gray robes, and live the rest of my life offering sacrifices and prayers to the Goddess of the Moon instead of returning to Diego. At least there, my soul would be safe. At least there, I wouldn't have to choose between my dignity and my child.Exhausted, broken, and emotionally drained, I eventually collapsed onto my bed and fell into a deep, troubled sleep. In my dream, the world was pitch black. I saw my son, Bryan, lying on a cold, barren floor, sick, frail, and utterly helpless. His skin was pale, his bre
