COURTNEY

The soft hum of the vehicle’s engine was the only sound accompanying us as we drove away from the safehouse. Lucas had insisted on a detour, refusing to tell me where we were heading.

"With blindfolds on?" I asked, raising an eyebrow as he held up a dark silk cloth in the dim light of the back seat. "Lucas, what are you planning?"

"Trust me, Courtney," he said softly, a gentle, reassuring smile touching his lips. "Just keep your eyes closed for a few more minutes. Please?"

I let out a soft sigh, nodding my head. I closed my eyes tightly, and I felt the smooth, cool fabric wrap around my head, plunging me into absolute darkness. I didn't resist. After everything we had been through—the betrayal, the prison cell, the pills, the near-death experience—trusting Lucas felt like the only safe harbor left in the world.

For a long while, I sat in silence, feeling the rhythmic motion of the car as it turned corners and climbed a slight hill. Then, as the vehicle finally came to a smooth halt and the doors clicked open, the ambient sounds of the outside world rushed in.

I heard music playing softly from a distance—a warm, celebratory melody. I heard the low hum of a crowd talking and murmuring, though I could not quite catch what they were saying. To be honest, I wasn't even listening to hear. My heart was simply pounding with a quiet, anxious curiosity.

I felt his warm, steady hands gently resting by my side, guiding my steps forward over steady pavement.

"Keep your eyes closed," Lucas whispered close to my ear, his breath brushing against my cheek.

I waited, standing still in the open air. Then, after a breathless moment, the music drifted to a pause. I felt his fingers brush against the back of my head, untying the knot of the blindfold.

The silk fell away. I blinked rapidly against the bright afternoon sunlight, letting my eyes adjust.

When my vision cleared, my breath caught painfully in my throat.

In front of me stood a magnificent, newly constructed building. It was a big hospital, gleaming with clean glass panels and modern white stone. Maybe it wasn't quite as massive as the towering mega-empire Diego had stolen and torn away from me, but it was remarkably grand, beautiful, and fully equipped with emergency bays and welcoming double doors. Above the main entrance, a fresh silver plaque caught the sunlight: THE SILVER FANG COMMUNITY MEDICAL CENTER.

"You..." I gasped, turning my head to look at Lucas, tears instantly blurring my vision. "You built this? For me?"

"You said your life's work was taken from you," Lucas said quietly, his amber eyes shining with absolute devotion. "An Alpha can destroy a building, Courtney, but no one can ever destroy what you hold in your hands. This is yours. A fresh start. Where you can heal people without looking over your shoulder."

All the emotion, the gratitude, the overwhelming wave of respect and fierce affection I had been holding back burst through my chest like a shattered dam. I lost complete control.

Without thinking about who was watching, without caring about pack laws or societal expectations, I threw my arms around his neck, pulled him down, and kissed him passionately on the lips.

It wasn't a tentative kiss. It was deep, hungry, and filled with all the raw survival, pain, and hope that had been eating away at me for weeks. In the open air, with dozens of pack members, nurses, and local citizens standing around us, our lips locked in a desperate embrace.

When I finally pulled back, gasping for air, I could see his face. Lucas was completely stunned, his eyes wide and his cheeks flushed. He looked utterly shocked that I had kissed him out in the open like that.

Maybe I shouldn't have, a small voice whispered in the back of my mind. We have a war on our hands. Diego is still out there.

But the next second, I knew he deserved it. After everything he had risked—walking into a dictator's fortress with a gun, pulling me from the jaws of despair, and building me a sanctuary—he deserved to know he wasn't alone.

For a second, the crowd around us went completely, deadeningly numb. Total silence blanketed the courtyard.

Then, a bitter, hostile voice cut through the stillness like a knife.

"Look at that! That is Luna Courtney! Alpha Diego's wife!" a voice snarled from the edge of the crowd, belonging to a visiting emissary from the Crescent Moon Pack. "She is a mated female, bound by blood law! She should not be seen kissing another man when her divorce with our Alpha is not finalized!"

The crowd immediately erupted. Shouts, gasps, and furious arguments broke out among the people.

"She’s a free woman! Diego threw her away!" someone from the Silver Fang Pack yelled back defensively.

"She belongs to our Alpha! Luna Courtney must return to our pack, she is the universal doctor and her loyalty belongs to Diego!" the Crescent Moon loyalists roared, stepping forward with hostile postures.

"Like hell she does! This is our territory!" Lucas’s pack members shouted back, forming a protective wall around us.

Just like a powder keg touching an open flame, the argument escalated instantly. Voices turned into shoving, shoving turned into aggressive shifts, and before anyone could stop it, a full-scale, brutal brawl erupted between the two packs right there in the pristine courtyard.

Shifters transformed partially, claws flashing, teeth bared, and fists flying as the courtyard turned into a war zone.

"Lucas, stop them!" I cried out, grabbing his arm as the chaos spiraled out of control.

"Stay behind me!" Lucas ordered, stepping in front of me as a group of Diego’s loyalists charged forward, weaponizing the riot to strike a blow against the Silver Fang territory.

The fight was ferocious, vicious, and entirely unmanageable. In the middle of the melee, fires broke out near the lower wing of the building. Without a functioning fire suppression system yet activated, the flames spread with terrifying speed through the timber and drywall.

Within an hour, the battle was over, but the damage was irreversible. Standing amidst the smoke and ash, I watched in absolute horror as the newly built hospital—the symbol of hope Lucas had given me—was completely destroyed, raised down to the ground, and burned to black ashes.

I fell to my knees in the soot, covering my face with my soot-stained hands, and wept bitterly on Lucas’s shoulder as he held me tight against his chest, both of us defeated by the violence of the world we were trapped in.

Amidst the crackling of the dying embers and the heavy silence of our defeat, my phone suddenly rang in the pocket of my coat.

With shaking, trembling fingers, I pulled it out. The screen lit up with a single, terrifying name: Diego.

I hit accept and pressed the phone slowly to my ear.

"Did you enjoy your little game, my love?" Diego’s voice purred through the speaker, chillingly calm, smooth, and laced with absolute triumph. "Everything you build turns to dust when you try to run from me. Now stop wasting time... just come back home."

COURTNEY"Not in this life, Diego. I will never return to you!" I screamed into the receiver, my voice raw and cracking with pure venom. As I was about to stab my thumb against the screen to end the call, a sudden, frantic noise on the other end froze the breath in my lungs. It wasn't Diego’s voice anymore."Courtney? Oh, dear child, please..."A chorus of terrified, weeping voices broke through the speaker. My heart stopped. It was the nuns from the Monastery of Wolves—the sacred sanctuary where I had sought refuge and peace years ago."Mother General Kim?" I choked out, tears instantly blinding my eyes as I stared at the smoking ashes of the hospital in front of me. "Mother, what is happening? Where are you?""We are locked in the courtyard of the monastery," Mother General Kim sobbed, her fragile voice trembling violently. "Alpha Diego... he came with his entire army. He arrested all of us. He claimed we harbored you, that we taught you defiance and made you leave him. Oh, child...

  • WHEN THE LUNA WALKS AWAY   SON OF A GUN

COURTNEYI blinked rapidly, trying to clear the heavy fog from my mind. The beeping of the heart monitor beside the bed sounded steady, clean, and entirely different from the oppressive, silent tension of Diego's mansion."Lucas...?" I whispered, my voice sounding weak and scratchy as my throat burned from the pill overdose. "Where am I? How did I get here?"Lucas leaned in closer, gently brushing a stray lock of hair away from my forehead. His amber eyes were filled with an intense mixture of relief and lingering terror."You're in a secure medical safehouse connected to the outer edge of my territory," Lucas answered softly, his thumb rubbing soothingly against the back of my hand. "You're safe now, Courtney. Just breathe."Memories of the past twenty-four hours came rushing back in a chaotic, agonizing wave—the police cell, Diego throwing my sick son onto the filthy concrete, my humiliating descent to my knees to beg for mercy, the broken glass in Diego's bedroom, and the handful o

  • WHEN THE LUNA WALKS AWAY   BLEEDING

COURTNEYThe heavy iron gates of the grand estate parted, and the familiar, looming architecture of the mansion rose before us. Stepping out of the vehicle, I realized the house had not changed at all. Everything remained exactly the same as it was ten years ago, frozen in time like a monument to my past captivity.I hurried to carry Bryan inside, rushing him to a comfortable bed while pack doctors were immediately summoned to hook him back up to proper monitoring equipment and stabilized oxygen. Once my son was resting safely, I picked up my small duffel bag and turned toward the familiar hallway leading to the guest wing."Where do you think you're going?" Diego’s deep, commanding voice stopped me in my tracks.I froze, turning around to face him as he stood leaning against the doorframe of the master suite, his hands tucked casually into his pockets."I'm going to my room," I murmured quietly, avoiding his intense gaze."You are sharing a room with me," he said, leaving no room for

  • WHEN THE LUNA WALKS AWAY   RETURNED

COURTNEYThe heavy metal door of the police cell slammed shut behind me with a chilling, metallic echo. I was taken away by the police, stripped of my white coat, my dignity, and my freedom, and thrown onto the cold concrete floor of a dark, damp holding cell.I uttered no words. I didn't scream, I didn't beg the guards, and I didn't shed a tear. My body felt numb, hollowed out by the sheer weight of the nightmare unfolding around me. But through the fog of exhaustion and defeat, one thing remained fiercely certain in my mind: I am not returning to Diego. I would rather rot in this concrete cage than crawl back to his bed."Prisoner in cell four! Your family is here to see you," a gruff police officer barked, rattling the iron bars with his baton.I sat up slowly, staring into the dark corner. "I have no family," I replied flatly, my voice hoarse.A few minutes later, heavy footsteps echoed down the concrete hallway. The officer unlocked the cell door and swung it open. Standing in th

  • WHEN THE LUNA WALKS AWAY   LOCKED UP

COURTNEYI don't want to go back to Diego. I couldn't. The mere thought of returning to that cold, loveless cage made my skin crawl and my chest tighten with suffocation. I ignored the nurse's sharp words, turned on my heel, and headed straight to my house. As I sat alone in the quiet darkness of my living room, my mind spun out of control. Maybe I should just leave everything behind, I thought, tears burning my eyes. Maybe I should go back to the Monastery of Wolves, take up my gray robes, and live the rest of my life offering sacrifices and prayers to the Goddess of the Moon instead of returning to Diego. At least there, my soul would be safe. At least there, I wouldn't have to choose between my dignity and my child.Exhausted, broken, and emotionally drained, I eventually collapsed onto my bed and fell into a deep, troubled sleep. In my dream, the world was pitch black. I saw my son, Bryan, lying on a cold, barren floor, sick, frail, and utterly helpless. His skin was pale, his bre
