COURTNEY

Two days on, the world I had carefully built around me came crashing down through the screen of my office television.

I was reviewing surgical charts when a breaking news alert flashed across the local pack network. My heart instantly stopped. There had been a brutal, unprovoked attack on the Silver Fang Pack—Lucas’s pack.

It was a smaller pack, at least far smaller and less militarized than Diego’s massive empire, leaving them utterly defenseless against the sudden assault.

The images on the screen showed burning timber, shattered homes, and weeping survivors huddled in the mud. As the news anchor read off the casualty reports, my breath caught in my throat. Lives were lost. Innocent wolves, elders, children, and even pregnant women had died in the crossfire. Their homes were scattered, their livelihoods reduced to ash and rubble.

As I watched all the death, the homeless, and the helpless crying out in agony, a crushing, suffocating weight settled over my chest.

Tears streamed down my face, hot and blinding, as a horrifying realization tore through me. All of this happened because of me.

Lucas had only extended a hand to help me secure my hospital loan because he cared for me. Diego had targeted him, blockaded his pack, and now unleashed a merciless military strike not because of territory or politics, but purely out of a psychotic, possessive rage. I had been with Diego years ago. He had treated me like trash, discarded me like an old piece of furniture, and now he was burning down houses and destroying innocent lives just so he could bend me to his will and have me back in his bed.

The grief inside me instantly morphed into a blazing, terrifying fury.

With shaking hands, I grabbed my desk phone. I didn't care about his blockades anymore. I didn't care about his threats. I dialed his direct private number, the one he had boasted was secured by his communications network, and waited for it to ring.

It picked up on the second ring.

"Courtney," Diego’s deep, smooth baritone purred through the speaker, dripping with arrogant satisfaction. "I was wondering when you would finally call. Have you realized that fighting me is entirely useless?"

"You monster," I choked out, my voice trembling with raw rage and tears. "You attacked Lucas's pack. Innocent people are dead, Diego! Pregnant women are dead! Because of your sick obsession with me!"

"I am a man who removes obstacles, Courtney," Diego replied casually, completely unfazed by my accusations. "Lucas thinks he can shelter you, play the hero, and keep what belongs to me. That was merely a warning. If he doesn't step aside, the next strike won't be on a border village; it will be right at his doorstep."

"I want to see you," I demanded, cutting him off, my voice dropping into a cold, lethal register. "Right now. Name the place."

There was a brief pause on the line, and then a low, victorious chuckle vibrated through the receiver.

"Come to my private estate tonight," Diego said smoothly. "An appointment is fixed, my love. I’ll be waiting for—"

Before he could finish his sentence, a sudden commotion erupted in the background on his end of the line. Muffled shouting echoed through the phone, sharp and frantic.

"Diego, you insane bastard!" a woman's voice shrieked shrilly. It was Chloe, his young, bubbly wife who had mocked my son in the hospital lobby just days ago. "I saw the news! You’re destroying everything, you're bringing a war to our doorstep over a woman who walked out years ago! I will not let you bring her back into this house! I am your wife, and I—"

BANG.

A deafening gunshot cracked through the speaker, so loud and sudden that I dropped the phone an inch from my ear, gasping in absolute horror. The shouting stopped instantly, replaced by a heavy, sickening thud against the hardwood floor.

"Diego...?" I whispered, my blood running completely cold, my whole body starting to violently shiver. "What... what did you just do?"

A second later, Diego picked the phone back up. His breathing was steady, calm, and utterly devoid of any human emotion, as if he had just swatted away an annoying fly instead of shooting his own wife in cold blood.

"She was loud, she was useless, and she had outlived her welcome," Diego said smoothly, his voice chillingly relaxed. "I just killed the last obstacle blocking us from coming back together, Courtney. Now, do you want me to do the same to Lucas, or are you ready to come home?"

The phone went dead with a sharp click as he ended the call.

I stood frozen in the middle of my silent office, the receiver slipping from my limp fingers to crash against the desk. I began to shiver uncontrollably, my teeth chattering as the dark, terrifying reality washed over me. The man I had once loved wasn't just cold. He was a monster, and he was coming for me next.

COURTNEY"Not in this life, Diego. I will never return to you!" I screamed into the receiver, my voice raw and cracking with pure venom. As I was about to stab my thumb against the screen to end the call, a sudden, frantic noise on the other end froze the breath in my lungs. It wasn't Diego’s voice anymore."Courtney? Oh, dear child, please..."A chorus of terrified, weeping voices broke through the speaker. My heart stopped. It was the nuns from the Monastery of Wolves—the sacred sanctuary where I had sought refuge and peace years ago."Mother General Kim?" I choked out, tears instantly blinding my eyes as I stared at the smoking ashes of the hospital in front of me. "Mother, what is happening? Where are you?""We are locked in the courtyard of the monastery," Mother General Kim sobbed, her fragile voice trembling violently. "Alpha Diego... he came with his entire army. He arrested all of us. He claimed we harbored you, that we taught you defiance and made you leave him. Oh, child...

  • WHEN THE LUNA WALKS AWAY   THE KISS

COURTNEYThe soft hum of the vehicle’s engine was the only sound accompanying us as we drove away from the safehouse. Lucas had insisted on a detour, refusing to tell me where we were heading."With blindfolds on?" I asked, raising an eyebrow as he held up a dark silk cloth in the dim light of the back seat. "Lucas, what are you planning?""Trust me, Courtney," he said softly, a gentle, reassuring smile touching his lips. "Just keep your eyes closed for a few more minutes. Please?"I let out a soft sigh, nodding my head. I closed my eyes tightly, and I felt the smooth, cool fabric wrap around my head, plunging me into absolute darkness. I didn't resist. After everything we had been through—the betrayal, the prison cell, the pills, the near-death experience—trusting Lucas felt like the only safe harbor left in the world. For a long while, I sat in silence, feeling the rhythmic motion of the car as it turned corners and climbed a slight hill. Then, as the vehicle finally came to a smoot

  • WHEN THE LUNA WALKS AWAY   SON OF A GUN

COURTNEYI blinked rapidly, trying to clear the heavy fog from my mind. The beeping of the heart monitor beside the bed sounded steady, clean, and entirely different from the oppressive, silent tension of Diego's mansion."Lucas...?" I whispered, my voice sounding weak and scratchy as my throat burned from the pill overdose. "Where am I? How did I get here?"Lucas leaned in closer, gently brushing a stray lock of hair away from my forehead. His amber eyes were filled with an intense mixture of relief and lingering terror."You're in a secure medical safehouse connected to the outer edge of my territory," Lucas answered softly, his thumb rubbing soothingly against the back of my hand. "You're safe now, Courtney. Just breathe."Memories of the past twenty-four hours came rushing back in a chaotic, agonizing wave—the police cell, Diego throwing my sick son onto the filthy concrete, my humiliating descent to my knees to beg for mercy, the broken glass in Diego's bedroom, and the handful o

  • WHEN THE LUNA WALKS AWAY   BLEEDING

COURTNEYThe heavy iron gates of the grand estate parted, and the familiar, looming architecture of the mansion rose before us. Stepping out of the vehicle, I realized the house had not changed at all. Everything remained exactly the same as it was ten years ago, frozen in time like a monument to my past captivity.I hurried to carry Bryan inside, rushing him to a comfortable bed while pack doctors were immediately summoned to hook him back up to proper monitoring equipment and stabilized oxygen. Once my son was resting safely, I picked up my small duffel bag and turned toward the familiar hallway leading to the guest wing."Where do you think you're going?" Diego’s deep, commanding voice stopped me in my tracks.I froze, turning around to face him as he stood leaning against the doorframe of the master suite, his hands tucked casually into his pockets."I'm going to my room," I murmured quietly, avoiding his intense gaze."You are sharing a room with me," he said, leaving no room for

  • WHEN THE LUNA WALKS AWAY   RETURNED

COURTNEYThe heavy metal door of the police cell slammed shut behind me with a chilling, metallic echo. I was taken away by the police, stripped of my white coat, my dignity, and my freedom, and thrown onto the cold concrete floor of a dark, damp holding cell.I uttered no words. I didn't scream, I didn't beg the guards, and I didn't shed a tear. My body felt numb, hollowed out by the sheer weight of the nightmare unfolding around me. But through the fog of exhaustion and defeat, one thing remained fiercely certain in my mind: I am not returning to Diego. I would rather rot in this concrete cage than crawl back to his bed."Prisoner in cell four! Your family is here to see you," a gruff police officer barked, rattling the iron bars with his baton.I sat up slowly, staring into the dark corner. "I have no family," I replied flatly, my voice hoarse.A few minutes later, heavy footsteps echoed down the concrete hallway. The officer unlocked the cell door and swung it open. Standing in th

  • WHEN THE LUNA WALKS AWAY   LOCKED UP

COURTNEYI don't want to go back to Diego. I couldn't. The mere thought of returning to that cold, loveless cage made my skin crawl and my chest tighten with suffocation. I ignored the nurse's sharp words, turned on my heel, and headed straight to my house. As I sat alone in the quiet darkness of my living room, my mind spun out of control. Maybe I should just leave everything behind, I thought, tears burning my eyes. Maybe I should go back to the Monastery of Wolves, take up my gray robes, and live the rest of my life offering sacrifices and prayers to the Goddess of the Moon instead of returning to Diego. At least there, my soul would be safe. At least there, I wouldn't have to choose between my dignity and my child.Exhausted, broken, and emotionally drained, I eventually collapsed onto my bed and fell into a deep, troubled sleep. In my dream, the world was pitch black. I saw my son, Bryan, lying on a cold, barren floor, sick, frail, and utterly helpless. His skin was pale, his bre
