Not His

Days have gone by since the clearing and I’ve mostly tried to keep a distance between Xander and i.

Trying to not make things harder for myself.

I walked through the halls, looking around to see if I could spot Xander anywhere.

So that I could move in the opposite direction.

When I turned the corner, I hit something hard face first, making me drop all my stuff.

The scent made it very obvious who it was.

“Dawn you ok?” I looked directly into those green eyes.

Eyes that reminded me of home.

I felt the sparks on my back and noticed that Xander had caught me before I could fall.

Making sure I was ok. Always being a hero.

I nodded in response to his question, picking up my stuff.

He came down onto his knees to help. His eyes, however, never leaving me.

Even when I tried to look away, it was hard to not notice him staring.

As he passed over my items.

I was about to take it, but he didn’t let go, making me look up at him in question.

“I was hoping we could meet up after school?” he asked.

“I’m busy,” I said coldly.

“then after that?” he raised his brow in question.

"Still busy”, I said, grabbing my things and leaving.

I didn’t want to be this cold.

But it was better to keep away for the time being, to make things easier when the rejection would come along.

Tomorrow would be his birthday. So I had a lot of preparing to do before then. Heart-wrenching preparations.

After school, I stayed in class for a while, getting in some extra studies as I avoid Xander.

When the sun started shining through the window, I knew it was getting late. And the sun would set soon.

So I packed my stuff and made my way home.

Replaying the last week’s events.

Reminiscing about what life could’ve been like had things worked out better.

Had my father had never done what he did. If only I was good enough.

“Dawn,” I heard my name being called by a familiar voice.

I looked up to see Xander leaning against the pillar of my home’s porch, waiting for me.

I stood still, frozen like a deer in headlights.

Xander walked up to me while he scratched the back of his head, clearly nervous.

“I’m sorry for the other day. I shouldn’t have...” he hinted at our kiss.

Part of me was hurt, feeling like I was some sort of mistake.

But deep down, I knew he was right. We never should’ve crossed that line.

“It’s okay,” I said, barely audible.

I looked down at the ground, unable to maintain eye contact with him as my heart shattered in my chest.

He crouched down slightly to look me in the eyes.

“To make it up to you, dinner’s on me,” he said, flashing a bright smile.

Confused, I looked at him.

“What?” I asked.

“I’m taking you out for dinner. Your mom already said it’s fine,” he explained, his smile slightly lessening.

Tears welled up in my eyes as I realized the complexity of our situation.

“We can’t do this, Xander,” I said, my voice trembling.

He seemed determined not to let this ruin our friendship.

“Don’t worry, it’s just a friend date,” he assured me, walking towards the direction of the pack hall.

“Just two good old friends having dinner alone. Nothing weird,” he continued.

Today would probably be our last day as friends, so I decided to make the most of it.

I laughed and followed him, curious to see where this would lead.

He led me to a table on a private balcony, hidden from prying eyes by tinted glass.

The balcony was adorned with beautiful fairy lights, creating a magical and romantic ambiance.

We sat and talked the night away, joking about Amanda and her group, and reminiscing about our childhood.

It felt like old times.

As the conversation turned more serious, Xander asked,

“What do you hope for in your mate?” My heart ached, for I wanted him to be my mate.

. But reality set in, reminding me of the damage Amanda had caused over the years.

“I want him to be strong and protective. But I also want him to be kind and loving. Oh and handsome would be a bonus,” I replied, laughter mingling with sadness.

There was something on Xander’s face, a mix of happiness and frustration.

Curiosity got the better of me, and I couldn’t help but ask,

“And you? What do you hope for in your dream mate?”

He seemed lost in thought for a moment, contemplating his answer.

“I would like her to be humble, caring, and strong. Someone who would make a great Luna,” he said quietly.

The realization hit me hard.

I was neither strong nor fit to be a Luna, and I couldn’t let him be burdened by my shortcomings.

But for now, we enjoyed each other’s company, cherishing the moments we had left as friends.

Little did he know that the truth would soon come out, and rejection would follow.

“oh and beautiful would be a bonus” he added and we laughed once again. although this time round, I faked it.

this time round, I knew I wasn’t the mate he wanted and needed.

  • Waiting for you: Howling Hearts 2   Longing for you

I stood and looked at myself in the mirror. My makeup was light...just enough shimmer around the eyes to make them look larger, more alive, and a soft pink gloss on my lips that made me appear serene, even if my heart was anything but.My hair was pin-straight and thrown over my shoulders, the ends brushing against my hips like silk. I had very little in the way of accessories. Like a thin silver chain and matching earrings... but that was intentional.I wanted the dress to be the center of attention. But no matter what I did, no matter how much I perfected the outer image, the anxiety remained the real star of the evening. It took up space. It whispered, shouted, tugged at the hem of my dress like an impatient child demanding to be acknowledged. My nerves had a way of stealing the spotlight. It always had.I didn’t even hear her enter, but I felt her before I saw her. Two warm hands rested gently on my shoulders, grounding me. I watched in the mirror as my mother placed her chin on

  • Waiting for you: Howling Hearts 2   Bedazzled and boring

The doorbell chimed gently as I stepped into the shop. The familiar scent of lavender and fabric glue filled the air, a scent that always brought a strange sense of comfort. It was a small, cozy boutique tucked in the heart of town, owned by one of the kindest omegas in the pack. She wasn’t just any tailor...she was the tailor.Every year, for every Mateball, she crafted dresses for half the pack. And every year, she managed to outdo herself. She was a werewolf too. One wouldn't guess it because she's so quiet, loving, humble, and probably the sweetest omega that ever existed.I remembered being younger, too young to care about dresses, and yet always finding myself in her care. While the adults had their so-called “important meetings,” which I now realized were just shouting matches disguised under the veil of secrecy, she’d whisk me away to her shop.I used to think my parents and grandparents were talking about secret alpha missions. In hindsight, she was just trying to shield me

When I looked back up at my mother, a smirk crossed her lips. For a moment I believed she knew what was going on between me and Xander. But as she turned her head to the side, curiosity brightening in her eyes, searching for the puzzle of her daughter standing before her, I realized she didn’t. I simply smiled and nodded.“Thanks, Mom,” I whispered beneath my breath. She returned my grin with one of her own, then dove back into the stack of papers scattered across her desk. I reached out, fingers grazing a stray sheet, ready to help, but my mind was already drifting back to Xander. My thoughts kept wandering back to the first step we were going to take very soon.Yes, the fear was still there. It didn’t vanish the instant I realized who I was or where I came from.No.But that terrifying roar in my head had quieted... transformed from a deafening scream to a faint whisper.A whisper that I could ignore. And I chose to.From here on out, I chose courage.Stepping outside, the world had

“I won’t be coming back to Silvermoon,” I said as we walked through the beautiful pack gardens.Xander, however, didn’t stop or even flinch at my words.“I expected it. Asher can’t be Alpha while living in a different pack. The Alpha family as a whole is very important, and even you have your own duties that you have to attend to here.It would make Asher look weak if you came back to Silver moon. But luckily for us that’s only until the mate ball,” he said.I stopped walking. He turned around to look at me.I wasn’t sure if I was ready to take my place beside Xander. I wasn’t sure if I could handle the watchful eyes of the pack. Their judgment, their expectations. I wasn’t sure if I was strong enough to stand in the spotlight just yet.Xander grabbed my hand, holding it tightly between his.“I was hoping we could come out as destined mates there. It would work. It would make sense,” he said, trying to convince me.I nodded, even though I wasn’t sure if I wanted that. But the smile on

The following day, the funeral was held at dusk. As per tradition. The setting sun cast the land in hues of gold and crimson, making long shadows over the gathered mourners. The air was thick with the scent of burning sage and damp earth, the two combining into something that felt both grounding yet suffocating simultaneously.I stood at the edge of the clearing, my fingers clenched tightly around the small coin in my palm. It was cool to the touch; the metal pressing sharply into my skin as if trying to anchor me to the moment. My heart felt heavy, weighed down by grief so deep it threatened to crush me from the inside out. I hadn’t wanted to come. I hadn’t wanted to stand before his lifeless body and accept that he was really gone. But this was his final request. One I couldn’t ignore or pass over to someone else. No matter how much it tore me apart. The entire pack was here, dressed in black, their faces etched with sadness as they stood in respectful silence.Wolves from allied pa

  • Waiting for you: Howling Hearts 2   Calvin Clair

“Are you sure that is all he said? You didn’t miss anything?” Xander asked, his voice laced with extreme worry. Each word carried the weight of something more, something unspoken.I had told him every word the vampire had said to me—except the part where he promised we would see each other again. I wasn’t even sure why I kept that part to myself. It just felt to ominous to share right now.“Yes, Xander. Like I said, he pretty much said nothing.” I shrugged, but deep down, my heart was still racing from the encounter. We walked in silence for a while, only the sound of the leaves and twigs crunching under our feet filling the void between us.The forest that once felt like home had now become unfamiliar as the wind rushed through the leaves reminding me gramps was gone.I could see the way Xander’s jaw tightened making it clear that his mind was working overtime. Something was gnawing at him and I needed to know what it was.“Why are you so worried?” I asked, glancing at him from the c
