The London was bussing this morning. Maya Bennett's heels clicked against the hospital corridor as she made her way to the clinical labs, her white coat around her shoulders. Coffee in hand, notes in the other, she barely noticed anyone around her. Medical school was relentless, she couldn't wait to graduate, leaving no little room for distractions .

Her phone buzzed. A text from Josh.

Don't forget we are watching starwars tonight!

Maya smiled faintly. Josh is handsome, rich, and endlessly patient i would say. He lived in Bath, a city of Georgian terraces and quiet riverside streets. Six months together, and despite their closeness, she had never let herself be intimate. She had been too busy with school and work that paid her bills and kept her independent. Every time the conversation about sex came up, small arguments followed. Josh was sweet and understanding, but he wasn't blind to her hesitation.

It's not about him, she reminded herself. It's about timing, and I'm not ready. Not yet.

By midmorning, Maya's mind shifted back to the corporate world. She had another meeting at Thoreau Systems, the same firm where she had met Lucas Thoreau two weeks ago. That brief encounter still lingered in her mind his eye and calm posture, the unsettling messages that followed.

Arriving at Thoreau Systems, the elevator was quiet Lucas Thoreau was already there, his smell could be perceived from miles away, and his presence filled the room without speaking.

Maya's heartbeat didn't skip, but she noticed him. He was watching her, silently noting how she placed her bag, opened her laptop, and settled into her chair.

"Good morning, Ms Bennett," he said, calm and precise.

"Morning, Mr Thoreau," she replied.

The meeting began efficiently. Every question Lucas asked was about the project timelines, compliance, and medical content accuracy but Maya couldn't ignore the way he observed her.

Maya caught herself doing the same. Observing him. CEO energy, controlled gestures, precision in everything he did.She reminded herself It's work. Nothing more.

After the meeting, she stepped aside with Nadia.

"You were incredible," Nadia whispered. "Did you notice how Lucas keeps watching you? Like... he's studying you?"

Maya shrugged. "He's a CEO of course he looks at everyone that's all."

Nadia smirked knowingly. "Uh-huh. That's all." I smell love in the air though she laughed

Nadia I am dating have you forgotten

Maya let it drop. She couldn't explain the chill that ran through her whenever Lucas looked at her.

That evening, Maya sat on the small balcony of her London flat, overlooking rooftops and the occasional taxi weaving through the streets. Josh's text earlier had made her smile, a faint comfort in the quiet evening.

Her phone buzzed. you looked stunning today couldn't keep my eyes off you.

Maya smiled just looking at the text .

Mr thoreau, she typed. You need to stop sending all these messages. I wanted to ask if

You've never met me before now? she typed. Surely... same school, same area...

No. Never.

Maya exhaled. He claimed never to have seen her before yet he watched her with an almost uncanny attention. It unsettled her.

What are you trying to accomplish? sending your employee a message at night she typed cautiously.

Maya leaned back in her chair. Their six months together had been safe, predictable. She appreciated the normalcy he brought. Yet something about Lucas lingered in her mind unsettling, intriguing, impossible to ignore. Maybe because she felt a Connection every time she set her eyes upon him, like something was actually drawing her close to him

Why am I thinking about him when I have Josh? she whispered aloud.

She didn't answer. She couldn't. The unknown, the tension, the faint chill in her chest that was enough.

The next few days were a careful balance. Maya immersed herself in studies, hospital rounds, and freelance consulting. Josh's messages were grounding, his calls warm and funny. And yet, the tension of Lucas's observation hung in the background, undeniable.

Every glance in the office, every email, every small interaction made her hyper-aware. She was aware that Lucas was watching, that he noticed habits, and behaviours she thought she hid.

And Lucas? He was unaware that Maya was dating Josh. The boyfriend she adored, the man she fought with over little things, the anchor of her life Lucas did not know. All he had was a curious, intelligent woman who worked professionally, efficiently, and without distraction. He had no idea of the ties between Maya and Josh, no idea that she belonged in someone else 's orbit.

Yet even without knowing, Lucas waited for an opportunity

  • Waiting in the shadows    The Long Awaited Wedding

The morning of the wedding arrived with soft sunlight pouring across the Thoreau estate. After everything the families had survived, the atmosphere was filled with laughter, nervous excitement and the beautiful chaos that came with preparing for a wedding everyone thought would never happen. Downstairs workers moved around arranging fresh white roses while musicians prepared quietly near the garden aisle. The entire estate looked breathtaking. Long crystal chandeliers hung beneath the decorated outdoor canopy while soft golden lights wrapped around the trees surrounding the venue.Everything looked like something out of a dream.Inside the bridal suite Maya sat quietly in front of the mirror while makeup artists made final adjustments to her appearance. Her white gown rested perfectly against her body, elegant and soft, flowing beautifully toward the floor. She looked at herself quietly for a moment.A smile slowly touched her lips. After everything she survived, she never imagined sh

  • Waiting in the shadows    Family Rebuilding

The mansion slowly filled with happy noises Maya stood inside the kitchen helping Layrus arrange cookies neatly on a tray while the little boy continued talking nonstop about school." My dad owns many companies," Layrus said Maya laughed softly. "That is not something you should use to intimidate people."Layrus frowned. "But it works""You are impossible."Maya shook her head trying not to smile.Layrus suddenly narrowed his eyes suspiciously while staring at her face. "Mama.""What?""You have been smiling all day.""That's a good thing"."You burnt toast this morning doing that."Before Maya could defend herself footsteps entered the kitchen.Lucas's eyes immediately settled on Maya the moment he walked in wearing a black shirt with the sleeves folded carelessly around his arms.Layrus pointed dramatically. "See? He is smiling as well"Lucas looked confused. "What did I do?""You people are acting suspicious."Maya laughed quietly. "Go help Alicia set the dining table." Layrus co

  • Waiting in the shadows    What Remains After Goodbye

Three months after Sophie's death, the silence she left behind still lingered heavily inside the mansion. The chaos was gone now. Kade was dead. The police investigations had ended. Reporters had stopped camping outside the Thoreau company. London had finally moved on from the nightmare that had consumed the city for months. But healing was not as easy as people imagined. Some wounds stayed long after the danger disappeared.Maya understood that more than anyone. Most mornings she woke up automatically before sunrise because Diya would start crying from her nursery room. The child had grown healthier gradually after months of treatments and medications, but she still needed constant attention. Maya carried her carefully through the mansion hallways almost every day while soft lullabies played quietly from her phone. At first, Lucas worried Maya was exhausting herself too much trying to care for Sophie's child while still carrying her own emotional pain, but Maya never complained. She

  • Waiting in the shadows    The End of Kade

Sophie's burial left a silence inside everyone that no conversation could fix. The mansion no longer felt like the same place. The once luxurious penthouse now carried grief in every corner. Even the staff moved quietly, as though speaking too loudly would reopen wounds nobody was ready to touch again.Maya had not fully recovered from Sophie's death. Some losses stayed inside people differently.Sophie's death was one of them. Three days after the burial, Maya stood quietly inside Diya's nursery watching the little girl sleep peacefully in her crib. The soft afternoon sunlight entered through the curtains gently while the child slept without knowing how much chaos surrounded her existence.Maya slowly adjusted the baby's blanket. Her chest tightened painfully. Diya had lost her mother before she could even remember her face. That thought alone hurt deeply. Behind her, Damein stood leaning quietly against the doorway. Since Sophie's death, he had become calmer, quieter, almost emotion

  • Waiting in the shadows    Her Final Redemption

They rushed to Sophie, who was already spitting out blood from her mouth.Maya was crying, shaking violently."Stay with me Sophie... please... your daughter needs you," she kept repeating, her voice breaking into fragments as if her lungs could no longer carry the weight of the words.Lucas shouted through tears, his hands hovering over Sophie like he was afraid touching her would make it more real."Why did you have to put yourself in the way?" he said, voice cracking at the end, anger and grief twisting together.Sophie, despite everything, still smiled faintly. It was weak, uneven, but it was there."It was my redemption," she whispered.Damein stood frozen. His eyes were wide, unfocused, as if his mind had left his body entirely. The shock had locked his tongue in place. He had seen violence before, betrayal, even death but not like this. Not someone choosing to sacrifice so deliberately.Sophie's breath became shallower. "I'm sorry... for what I did," she continued, blood staini

The warehouse remained swallowed in chaos after Kade's final words. while police sirens echoed louder outside the Bellmont district. Nobody moved for a few seconds after Kade whispered, "It should end here."Then everything exploded at once. Kade suddenly pushed Maya forward violently.Lucas caught her before she hit the floor. "Get Layrus!" he shouted immediately. Gunshots erupted from the second floor instantly as Kade's men opened fire. The entire warehouse became chaos again. Maya screamed when bullets struck the metal rails above her head while Lucas dragged her behind a stack of wooden crates."Stay down!"Damein fired back immediately toward the upper floor while police voices started echoing outside the building."Armed police! Drop your weapons!"Kade laughed loudly through the chaos. "You're too late!"One of his men tried escaping through the back exit but was immediately tackled by officers rushing inside the warehouse. Another opened fire recklessly before being shot in t
