The London sky was pale that morning. Maya Bennett's heels clicked against the polished hospital corridor as she made her way to the clinical labs, her white coat snug around her shoulders. Coffee in hand, notes in the other, she barely noticed the hum of morning activity. Medical school was relentless, she couldn't wait to graduate, leaving no little room for distractions and Maya had learned long ago to guard her focus fiercely.

Her phone buzzed. A text from Josh.

Don't forget dessert tonight!

Maya smiled faintly. Josh is handsome, rich, and endlessly patient i would say. He lived in Bath, a city of Georgian terraces and quiet riverside streets. Six months together, and despite their closeness, she had never let herself be intimate. She had been too busy with rotations, lectures, assignments, and freelance consulting projects that paid her bills and kept her independent. Every time the conversation about sex came up, small arguments followed. Josh was sweet and understanding, but he wasn't blind to her hesitation.

It's not about him, she reminded herself. It's about timing, and I'm not ready. Not yet.

By mid-morning, Maya's mind shifted back to the corporate world. She had another meeting at Thoreau Systems, the same firm where she had met Lucas Thoreau two weeks ago. That brief encounter still lingered in her mind his gaze, calm and deliberate; the unsettling messages that followed.

Observation is not communication. Not yet.

The words had stayed with her. Cold. Precise. Calculated. Exactly like him.

Arriving at Thoreau Systems, the elevator ride was quiet. On the twenty-fifth floor, the boardroom smelled faintly of polished wood and leather. Lucas Thoreau was already there, reviewing reports. His posture was sharp and controlled, his smell could be perceived from miles away, and his presence filled the room without speaking.

Maya's heartbeat didn't skip, but she noticed him. He was watching her, silently noting how she placed her bag, opened her laptop, and settled into her chair. Professional. Efficient. Detached. Exactly what he expected, perhaps.

"Good morning, Ms Bennett," he said, calm and precise.

"Morning, Mr Thoreau," she replied, neutral.

The meeting began efficiently. Every question Lucas asked was about the project timelines, compliance, and medical content accuracy but Maya couldn't ignore the way he observed her. Not attraction. Just... attention. Focus. A careful, deliberate evaluation of her professionalism.

Maya caught herself doing the same. Observing him. CEO energy, controlled gestures, precision in everything he did. Nothing wasted. No unnecessary motion. She reminded herself: It's work. Nothing more.

After the meeting, she stepped aside with Nadia.

"You were incredible," Nadia whispered. "Did you notice how Lucas keeps watching you? Like... he's studying you?"

Maya shrugged. "He's a CEO. Focused. That's all."

Nadia smirked knowingly. "Uh-huh. That's all." I smell love in the air though she laughed

Nadia I am dating have you forgotten

Maya let it drop. She couldn't explain the chill that ran through her whenever Lucas looked at her. She shook her head and focused on her next rotation, her mind shifting to exams, patient charts, and assignments.

That evening, Maya sat on the small balcony of her London flat, overlooking rooftops and the occasional taxi weaving through the streets. Josh's text earlier had made her smile, a faint comfort in the quiet evening.

Her phone buzzed. Unknown number.

I know where you are.

Maya froze. Fingers hovered over the screen.

Lucas Thoreau, she typed. You need to stop sending cryptic messages.

I am not sending cryptic messages.

You texted first, she replied.

Maya shivered slightly. Observation. Not communication. The precision of his words unnerved her.

You've never met me before today? she typed. Surely... same school, same area...

No. Never.

Maya exhaled. He claimed never to have seen her before yet he watched her with an almost uncanny attention. It unsettled her.

What are you trying to accomplish? she typed cautiously.

Nothing. Yet.

Maya leaned back in her chair, the city lights blurred behind her. Josh. Warm, dependable. Their six months together had been safe, predictable. She appreciated the normalcy he brought. Yet something about Lucas lingered in her mind unsettling, intriguing, impossible to ignore. Maybe because she felt a Connection every time she set her eyes upon him, like something was actually drawing her close to him

Why am I thinking about him when I have Josh? she whispered aloud.

She didn't answer. She couldn't. The unknown, the tension, the faint chill in her chest that was enough.

The next few days were a careful balance. Maya immersed herself in studies, hospital rounds, and freelance consulting. Josh's messages were grounding, his calls warm and funny. And yet, the tension of Lucas's observation hung in the background, subtle but undeniable.

Every glance in the office, every email, every small interaction made her hyper-aware. She was aware that Lucas was watching, that he noticed patterns, habits, and behaviours she thought she hid.

And Lucas? He was unaware that Maya was dating Josh. The boyfriend she adored, the man she fought with over little things, the anchor of her life Lucas did not know. All he had was a curious, intelligent woman who worked professionally, efficiently, and without distraction. He had no idea of the ties between Maya and Josh, no idea that she belonged in someone else 's orbit.

Yet even without knowing, Lucas calculated. He watched. He waited.

Somewhere in his sleek office overlooking London, Lucas allowed himself the satisfaction of a quiet observation. The pieces were in motion. The game had only just begun.

Maya, oblivious to how entwined their worlds would become, thought of her life medical school, Josh, London, work. Everything was controlled. Balanced. Predictable.

Lucas closed his eyes briefly. If she had moved on... then he would too.He had to.The contraction came like a wave splitting stone.Maya gasped, fingers gripping the hospital sheets as her body arched against the pain. The sterile scent of antiseptic burned her lungs. Monitors beeped in uneven rhythm."Breathe, Maya," the nurse urged gently. "You're progressing."Anoth

Damien carried a small container of strawberry ice cream. He placed it gently on the kitchen counter. "Here," he said softly. "I know it won't reach the baby, but... I wanted you to have it."Maya's fingers brushed the lid. She smiled faintly, her lips trembling with exhaustion. "Thank you, Damien. Even if it doesn't make it to the baby... it still feels... normal."Damien leaned closer, a glint in his eyes. "You just started enjoying Sweden, and this happened, and now strawberry ice cream. That counts as normal, right?"She laughed softly, the sound fragile and delicate. "I suppose... it does."Without thinking, she touched Damien's lips with cotton wool to clean the blood on his lips."Hey!" he said, startled, but his eyes sparkled.Maya grinned, removing her hands, sorry, I was just trying to help.He chuckled, reaching out to steady her hand. "You're impossible," he murmured."I'm just... surviving," she whispered, her voice barely audible.Damien's gaze softened. "And you're doin

As the call ended.Lucas went straight to Sophie. The front door shut behind him with controlled force. Not loud enough to be called a slam, but firm enough to announce that something had shifted.Sophie was in the living room, seated comfortably, her phone in hand. She looked calm. Too calm for someone who had just shaken his world with a single post.Lucas stopped in front of her and held out his phone. The screen glowed between them. Her announcement. Her claim. Her certainty."Explain this," he said. His voice was low. Controlled. The kind of control that meant anger was sitting just beneath the surface.Sophie glanced at the phone, then back at him. She did not look ashamed."I'm fighting for my right," she replied evenly.Lucas's jaw tightened."You're right?" he repeated. "You post something like this without speaking to me first?"She stood slowly, placing her phone down."You only remember I exist when Maya is angry with you," she shot back. "The moment she calls you, the mom

The cold Swedish night wrapped around Maya as soon as she stepped outside Damien's family's house. The warmth, the laughter, the comfort she had briefly allowed herself to feel vanished the moment the door closed behind her. The crisp air as Damien and Maya walked up the steps to his family's home. The stairs were neat, Maya felt a nervous flutter. She had never met a host family like this before, and she wasn't sure what to expect. Before Damien could knock, the door swung open, and a tall, warm-faced woman peered out, smiling broadly."Damien! At last!" she exclaimed, stepping aside to usher them in. "And who is this?" Her eyes landed on Maya instantly, taking in her poised stance and calm smile.Maya froze for a moment. She hadn't expected such immediate scrutiny. "I... I'm Maya. Hello."The woman's eyes sparkled with curiosity, a little suspicion, and delight all at once. "Ah! So you're Damien's girlfriend?"Maya blinked. Damien's jaw tightened, his hand brushing hers lightly as he tried to intervene. "Mom! No - Maya isn't -"But Mrs Bergström wasn't listening. "Girlfriend, of course! I can see it the way you walk together, arriving side by side, the way he looks at you..." She beamed. "I was wonderin

The moment she stepped into the sleek Swedish clinic, she felt a surprising sense of calm."Hello! How can I help you?" a tall, kind-faced man greeted her."I... just need to register," Maya said, trying to hide her nerves."I'm Dr Damien," he said with a soft smile.
