Chapter 4

Author: Counting Stars
The room erupted in suggestive laughter.

When Bethany saw the color drain from my face, her smile turned smug.

"Wait, Julia, you seriously don't know about that? Charles didn't know what he was doing when we first got together. I'm the one who taught him everything, so really, you should be thanking me…"

I cut her off. "Are you done? Do you have to take a shot at me every chance you get?"

As I reached for my glass, my hand clipped the bottle in front of me. It tipped over, spilling across the table and splashing Bethany's dress.

She shot to her feet with a shriek.

"My dress!"

She looked at me as if I had done it on purpose.

"I was just joking! Everyone here knows that's just how I am. But throwing things at me because you can't take a joke is completely out of line."

Without hesitating, Charles took off his jacket and laid it across Bethany's lap.

It was a limited-edition jacket I had saved for months to buy. I had searched all over the city before finally tracking one down.

He frowned at me. "It was a joke. Do you have to take everything so personally? Everyone came here to have a good time. Stop ruining the mood."

My chest tightened until I could barely breathe. Bethany started the whole thing, yet somehow I was the one being blamed.

Charles's friends immediately jumped in.

"If you can't take a joke, then leave. Why are you sitting there glaring at everyone?"

"Charles, I thought you said no one was bringing their girlfriend tonight. She's always the one killing the mood. She clearly doesn't fit in with us, but she keeps forcing her way into everything."

Eva took a sip of her drink, wearing an innocent smile as she delivered the insult.

"Come on. Some people get insecure when they're not used to being around successful people. When you somehow land a guy like Charles, I guess it makes sense to keep him on a short leash."

She turned back to Bethany.

"Okay, next question. What's the sweetest thing Charles ever said to you?"

This time, tears suddenly filled Bethany's eyes. She looked straight at Charles and said, her voice trembling, "He told me he'd marry me."

I instinctively turned toward the man beside me, but something sparkling beneath the table caught my eye.

It was the rhinestones on Bethany's heel.

Hidden beneath the table, she had lifted her foot and was slowly running it up the leg of Charles's dress pants.

Charles didn't stop her. His expression didn't change at all.

Nausea surged into my throat. I covered my mouth, hurried to the restroom, and dry-heaved over the sink.

After wiping the tears from the corners of my eyes, I walked out of the bar without looking back.

I didn't have much to pack. Everything I owned fit into a single suitcase.

I had just zipped it shut when the front door flew open. Charles stood in the doorway, out of breath, panic written across his face.

For one foolish second, I thought he had come back for me.

Instead, he grabbed my arm and hauled me to my feet, his expression ice-cold.

"Did you make that post?"

"What post?"

Charles shoved his phone in front of my face.

A local gossip account had posted:

[Top SAT Scorer's Sister Caught in Messy Love Triangle].

The post had already climbed to the top of the local trending page, with thousands of comments underneath.

I glanced at it and shook my head.

"It wasn't me."

Charles gave a humorless laugh, his voice rising.

"You're still denying it? No one knows more about Beth and me than you do. Who else could have posted it? Do you have any idea what people are saying about her online? She's falling apart! What did she ever do to deserve being framed like this?"

Framed?

Most of the top comments were accusing me of being the other woman, with Eva leading the attack. Only a handful of people were criticizing Bethany.

Did he honestly not see that, or did he simply not care?

I forced the words out. "Look at the comments. Most of them are attacking me."

Charles acted as if he hadn't heard me.

"Apologize to Beth."

That was the last straw.

"Are you blind, or do you just not care?!" I screamed. "I'm the one they're tearing apart online! Me!"

Charles froze, but the accusation was already out of his mouth.

"Are you really that desperate to get married? Are you so scared no one else will want you that you'd do something this disgusting just to force me into it?"

My throat tightened until I could barely breathe.

So that was what he truly thought of me.

All this time, I was the only one looking forward to our wedding.

"Fine. I did it. I'm so desperate to marry you that I'll do anything. Is that what you wanted to hear?"

His only answer was the deafening slam of the door.

My eyes burned, but no tears came. I pulled my suitcase into the elevator. As it carried me down, something inside me finally went still.

Once I was on the train, I saw Bethany's latest Instagram post.

[I was having a rough night, so he drove across town to get tacos from our favorite place near our old high school. Nothing beats having someone who always shows up for you.]

Charles's watch was visible in the corner of the photo.

As the train pulled away from the station, a message appeared on my phone.

[Apologize to Beth, and the wedding can still happen as planned.]

I didn't respond. I blocked him on the spot.

It didn't matter. I had stopped wanting to marry him a long time ago.

I would be just fine without him.

-

Julia Graham remained silent until the night before the wedding.

Charles refused to reach out first, convinced she would eventually give in. He even planned to keep his groomsmen at the hotel and arrive late to the venue the next morning, just to make her panic and teach her a lesson.

Instead, one of them called him first and immediately started yelling.

"Charles, what the hell is going on? You canceled the wedding and didn't bother telling any of us! Are you messing with us?"

Charles's twisted logic almost made me laugh."Do you have any idea how ridiculous you sound? Do you really not understand why I left? Where were you all those times I needed you most?"Charles took a step back, his lips parting as he struggled to answer."I... I admit there were times when I didn't keep enough distance from Beth. But I swear I never cheated on you. I would never do anything to betray you!"I gave him a bitter smile."Betrayal doesn't begin only when things turn physical. Can you admit that every time you stayed silent and let her cross the line, you encouraged her? You made her think she could humiliate me right in front of you and get away with it."Countless memories flashed through my mind.I had lost track of how many nights I had lain awake, staring at a phone he never answered. Meanwhile, he was at Bethany's house, having what he called academic discussions with her. They talked about philosophy and history, subjects I knew little about. Charles had neve

During my first week in Ardenfall, I found a part-time job at a flower shop.Unlike Langford, the weather was mild, and life moved at a slower pace.Working among the flowers, surrounded by their soft fragrance, I finally felt the tension I had carried for so long begin to ease. The only downside was that people kept asking about the wedding.Even after I changed my number, concerned friends and former coworkers still found ways to contact me.No matter who asked, I gave them the same answer.[We realized we weren't right for each other, so we ended things. Thanks for checking in.]Most of them responded with sympathy. They all seemed to think Charles was such a great catch that I would never find anyone else like him. They didn't know the whole story, and I had no interest in explaining it.Besides, living alone was far more peaceful than my life with him had ever been.Only a week had passed, but everything that had happened in Langford already felt like another lifetime.

With his wedding to Julia only days away, Charles had drunk far more than he intended. By then, he had completely lost track of what he was saying or doing. Then something warm brushed against his leg.He looked up in confusion and met Bethany's unfocused gaze.It wasn't as though Charles had been unaware of her feelings for him. Whenever they tutored Eva together, he had always made a point of keeping his distance. The only time he had let his guard down was during their recent trip, when they lost a game at one of the attractions and were assigned a couples' challenge as a penalty. With Eva egging everyone on, the staff assumed Charles and Bethany were together and positioned them side by side before either of them could correct the misunderstanding. When a bucket of water was dumped over them, Charles instinctively stepped in front of Bethany to shield her soaked dress from the crowd.Other than that, nothing inappropriate had ever happened between them. The moment Charles f

Eva's voice was frantic. "Ch-Charles, Beth's drunk, and she's trying to leave with some guy. I don't know who he is, and I'm scared something might happen to her. Can you come?"For years, Eva had acted as though Charles was still the first person Bethany should turn to whenever something went wrong. He had always let it slide, partly because Eva was younger and partly because helping had once seemed harmless. Now, though, the assumption grated on him."Eva, Beth isn't my responsibility anymore."But Eva was crying too hard to even process what he said.Charles was already on edge, and the sound of her sobbing made him want to hang up.Still, he had watched Eva grow up and thought of her as a younger sister. Worried that she might be in trouble too, he went anyway. The moment he stepped into the private lounge, confetti cannons exploded in his face."Surprise!"His friends burst into cheers.Bethany was sitting safely in the middle of the couch with one arm around Eva. The man on the other end let out an impatient laugh."Come on, man. Your number is in the sales contract. How could I have the wrong number? The seller gave it to me and told me to call when I was ready to move in."He gave Julia's name and described the house in exact detail. The longer Charles listened, the less sense any of it made. How could Julia sell the house without even discussing it with him? Was this another one of her attempts to make a point? It was unbelievably childish. He forced himself to keep his temper under control."I'm sorry, but the house is no longer for sale. Whatever you paid, I'll pay you double."After ending the call, Charles immediately dialed Julia's number. A recorded message informed him that the number had been disconnected. He rubbed the space between his eyebrows and forced himself to stay calm, and then sent her a message.[Can you please grow up and stop this?]A single gray check mark appeared beside the message. It had been sent, but no

Charles stiffened. He was already furious that Julia had been ignoring him, and being yelled at for no apparent reason only made his temper spike."I didn't cancel the wedding. What the hell are you talking about?"The man on the other end gave a disbelieving laugh."How are you the last person to know your own wedding was canceled? Call the venue yourself if you don't believe me. They said the reception's off. Don't tell me Julia dragged you through all this when she never planned to marry you in the first place."Charles had no idea what was going on, but he was still clearheaded enough to snap, "Shut the hell up if you don't know what you're talking about! Who are you to accuse Julia of something like that?"He ended the call, got out of bed, and opened the closet, still refusing to believe it.He vaguely remembered Julia bringing home the suit she had ordered for him, but he had been too busy tutoring Eva to even try it on.Now, the closet was empty. Before he could make s
