LOGINJason Ashford walked to the office and placed the tray on the coffee table, then they hugged each other and sat on the sofa. The Cartwright family and the Ashford family had been friends for decades.
The smile on Jason’s face vanished. He looked at his friend with sorrow in his eyes and said, “Life has played a cruel joke on me, Hiram. My future wife got married today.”
Hiram searched his friend’s face for any hint of a joke. However, all he saw was a quiet, steady peace he hadn't seen in years. When did his best friend start dating?
There was a mix of emotions in his eyes when he heard that his best friend had moved on after mourning his late girlfriend for three years.
Before he could respond, his Executive Secretary walked into his boss’s office with a porcelain cup in his hand.
After his Executive Secretary left, Hiram looked at his best friend with eyes full of concern and asked, “Are you alright, Jason? Who has the guts to steal your future wife?”
Jason shook his head and replied, “I feel like my heart has been torn apart, Hiram. I went to the hospital to confess my love to her, but I was told that she was going to Home Affairs to get married.
When I arrived at Home Affairs, I found her in the parking lot, her face covered in tears. Her husband left her stranded at Home Affairs and told her that he didn’t love her.
I don’t understand why he married my future wife because he has been dating your sister for years.”
Hiram was so shocked to hear that the heartless man had been dating his baby sister and said, “I think you are mistaken, Jason. My baby sister told me this morning that she is not dating anyone. Who is that despicable person?”
Jason laughed, but there was no humour in it, and replied, “Hiram, everyone knows that your sister has been dating Preston James since high school.”
A surge of anger rose in Hiram’s heart to know that his beloved sister lied to him with a straight face.
Hiram pulled out his phone and dialled their friend, Seth West’s number. When the call was connected, he said, “Hello, Seth. How are you doing?”
Seth smiled broadly and replied, “Hello, Hiram. I am well. Thank you. How are you?” Hiram forced a smile and said, “All is well with me, Seth. There is a rumour that Preston James got married today. Do you know what the rush was?”
Seth laughed and replied, “I was shocked to hear that Preston married a random girl because he has been dating your sister for a long time, and I didn’t hear about their breakup.
I heard that his grandfather promised to give Preston company shares should he get married within three months. Did you forbid your beloved sister to marry Preston?”
Hiram couldn’t believe that everyone knew about Preston and his baby sister’s relationship, but he was in the dark.
Hiram looked at Jason and replied, “Vivica hid that information from us. She told me that she was still young, and she didn’t want to date anyone yet.” Hiram bade his friend goodbye, then they hung up.
It dawned on Jason that Preston had used Brooklyn as a tool to gain control of the company shares.
Jason was so angry that he laughed and said, “I am so angry at Preston for hurting my future wife. From today onward, Preston is my arch-rival. I will snatch everything from his hand.”
Hiram looked at Jason and replied, “To show my support, my friend, I will terminate the partnership between the Cartwright Group and the James Group. Then I will hand the renewable energy project over to you to teach Preston a lesson.
To be honest with you, Jason, I bypassed the standard selection process and handed the renewable energy project to the James Group as a personal favour to my baby sister. They didn’t even deserve it.” Jason was happy to hear that.
Hiram looked at his friend and asked, “Jason, don’t you want to join my family to celebrate my sister’s birthday?”
Jason shook his head and replied, “I am afraid of Grandpa Cartwright’s matchmaking. He had told me several times that he would be over the moon if I could be his grandson-in-law.”
Then Jason pulled out an exquisite box from his suit jacket and handed it to Hiram and said, “Please give this gift to your sister and tell her I wish her all the best.”
Hiram laughed out loud and said, “Thank you, Jason. My sister will be over the moon. I will be thrilled to have you as my brother-in-law, too, Jason.” Then they left the office chatting and laughing.
At Brooklyn’s apartment, crumpled tissues were scattered around Brooklyn like fallen petals. The crimson rim of her eyes betrayed the hours she had spent in tears. Preston had played with her feelings, and it hurt so much.
At that moment, someone knocked on the door. She quickly tidied up the crumpled tissues, then she approached the door, her hand lingering on the knob in a moment of hesitation before opening it.
Standing at the door was her best friend, Fiona Duncan, whose bright smile was almost as vibrant as the balloons and cake she carried to celebrate the dual occasion of her friend’s birthday and marriage.
The cheerful greeting died on Fiona’s lips when she saw the sorrow etched into her best friend’s face. She had expected a glowing bride and birthday girl.
Fiona looked at her best friend with concern in her eyes and asked, “What happened, Brooklyn? I have been calling you for the whole day.”
Brooklyn ushered Fiona to the living room and replied, “Preston doesn’t love me, Fiona. The ink on our marriage certificate was barely dry when my new husband abandoned me at Home Affairs.
He informed me that I was nothing but a wife in name only, then he took our marriage certificate and left. Fiona, I can’t stop wondering why he tied his life to mine when his heart was never in it.” Then tears streamed down her stunning face.
A gasp escaped Fiona’s lips, and her eyes were wide in disbelief at the cruelty of Preston leaving his new bride alone at Home Affairs.
Fiona hugged her best friend tightly with tears brimming in her eyes and said, “I am so sorry, my dearest Brooklyn. Preston doesn’t deserve you. Why didn’t you call me after that heartless man abandoned you? I would have come and picked you up.”
At Mr Ashford Senior’s private ward, he was surrounded by the people he loved the most. He looked at his son, Victor, then to his daughter-in-law and said, “I miss my wife so much, my children. I am ready to join her in heaven.”Before they could respond, Jason walked into the private ward and said, “Grandpa, please give me two years. You can’t go to heaven without meeting my beautiful wife.”The private ward, which was thick with the heavy silence of a final goodbye, suddenly shifted. Jason’s words hung in the air, a startling contrast to the quiet resignation of his grandfather’s plea. The old man turned his head slowly, his cloudy eyes focusing on Jason. A faint, knowing smile flickered on his lips and asked, his voice barely a whisper, "Two years?"Jason’s parents exchanged a look of stunned hope. They had been preparing for the end, but their son had just handed his grandfather a reason to check the calendar instead of the clock.Jason stepped closer and took his grandfather's fra
When Brooklyn walked out of the James family mansion, her husband tried to follow her, but his mother stopped him.She looked at her son, her eyes flashing with a cold, desperate resolve, and barked, “Don't you dare follow that girl, Preston. I refuse to have a common janitor staining our family tree.Do you want our social circle laughing at us? You must cut her off now, before the scandal becomes permanent. Vivica is the only one who belongs in this house.Forget about the company shares, Son. We will find a way to manage the inheritance until Vivica turns twenty-one, but I will never sit across from that girl for another meal."Ziva looked at his brother with tears brimming in her eyes and said, “Big Brother, please listen to Mom. That girl is nothing but a social climber who has forgotten her place. Please divorce her as soon as possible, Big Brother. We need to erase this mistake before anyone finds out that she is your nominal wife.”Before Preston could respond, Mr James Senior
Brooklyn turned to Ziva and said, her tone laced with quiet disappointment, “Some people have such narrow minds. Tell me, what exactly is the shame in being a janitor? Or does this house only respect people with titles and pedigrees?”Ziva was caught off guard. She had expected a fragile orphan she could break with a few well-placed insults, but Brooklyn’s unflinching composure told a different story. She realized that her new sister-in-law wasn’t a pushover to be bullied.Ziva’s mouth hung open, her words dying in her throat as she struggled to find a comeback. Unable to speak, she glared at Brooklyn, her eyes burning with a raw, unchecked hatred.Across the table, Preston shot his wife a warning glare, his eyes like shards of ice, silently commanding her to submit. However, Brooklyn ignored his cold gaze entirely, which made his authority feel hollow. Her mother-in-law slammed her hand against the dining table and shrieked, her voice vibrating against the walls, “How dare you! A girl
At the James family residence, when Ziva heard the sound of the car, she stepped outside the mansion. She then stood in the driveway, her posture stiff and her hands firmly on her hips. She wasn’t there to offer a warm welcome to her new sister-in-law. Her presence was a silent, cold threat designed to intimidate Brooklyn before a single word was even spoken. She wanted to avenge her best friend, Vavica.Brooklyn got out of her car, then she met Ziva’s glare with a steady, unbreakable gaze. She didn't look like a nervous newcomer. However, she looked like a woman who had already weathered enough chaos to be immune to Ziva's petty power plays.Ziva stepped forward and linked her arm through her brother’s, pulling him toward the mansion as if her brother’s wife didn't exist.Preston allowed himself to be led, his silence a stinging betrayal as they vanished into the living room together. Ziva paused at the door, then she glanced back with a look of pure, cold satisfaction before disappea
In the dining room, Vivica sat at the long dining table, her bandaged feet hidden beneath her silk gown, looking small and fragile. She lowered her eyes to hide the flicker of resentment still burning inside her heart. She spoke with a quiet, practiced humility and said, "Grandpa, I have come to apologize for my rebellious conduct.I let my impulses get the better of me, and I deeply regret it. I hope you can find it in your heart to forgive me."For a moment, the room fell still, leaving nothing but the steady, rhythmic ticking of the grandfather clock to fill the void.Vivica kept her head bowed, playing the part of the penitent to perfection. She knew that if she wanted to see Preston. She had to get back into Grandpa’s good graces first. Her grandfather didn't soften his gaze. He let the silence stretch until Vivica’s shoulders began to tremble. Finally, he leaned forward, his massive frame casting a shadow that seemed to swallow the light from the dining table. His eyes cut throug
Hiram ran a hand over his face, the exhaustion etched into every line of his features, and said, "I am at my wits’ end, Jason. She won’t listen. I have begged, threatened, and reasoned until I am blue in the face, but she has dug her heels in over that man.Do you know what she did the previous day? She sacked Uncle Raymond on the spot because the poor man was in the way of her secret rendezvous with Preston.”Jason couldn’t believe his ears and asked, “So, who is taking her to the university, Hiram?”A faint, satisfied smile played on Hiram’s handsome face. The amusement was clear in his voice, and he replied, “Grandpa finally stepped in. He told her that if she is old enough to fire the family driver, she is old enough to find her way to the university.Jason, you should have seen her face. The shock alone was worth it. She looked like the world had just ended.”Jason laughed out loud, clutching his sides as if they might split, and said, “Please tell me she didn’t actually walk the
Preston opened and closed his mouth, but nothing came forth. He was already planning to use his grandfather as a shield to keep his nominal wife bound to him for two years. His silence was too heavy, his excuses too convenient.Brooklyn realized with a sinking heart that she was being played. Her hu

Hiram was shocked to hear that his baby sister was seen getting into a married man’s car. He looked at his brothers and replied, “When I was at the university, I saw Preston in the parking lot.I made it clear that he must stay away from my sister. I won't stand by while she drags our family’s repu
At the Cartwright family estate, Mr Cartwright Senior looked at his granddaughter coldly and said, “I am so disappointed in you, Vivica.
