Chapter 8

Author: Nocturne Flower
When I looked at Stanley, I felt surprisingly calm deep down.

"I know she loves me, but love isn’t all that there is."

He froze.

"She may love me, but she loves herself more. The fact that she loves me is the reason she thinks I would forgive her, no matter how she treats me. It’s the reason she takes my patience for granted." I fixed a look at him. "Stanley. I want you to know that I never resented you."

He looked up at me.

"You’re only twenty-two. You’re a young man who used the wrong app

She stopped sending me texts after that.Last I heard, she went back to Ambrough. She seemed not to be coping very well after Stanley left. However, it was none of my business anymore. What’s in the past should stay in the past.I had spent the last seven years of my life knocking on that door. I was not going to look back.A year later, it was spring in Hafort. The flowers had bloomed earlier than expected. My wedding with Juniper was set for May. We were going to get married in a small chapel by the sea. We did not invite many guests. It was just going to be our families and some close friends in attendance.A few days before the wedding, I received a letter. It was from an anonymous sender. My name was written on the cover.Upon opening it, its only contents were a picture. It was a picture of Clementine and me on my eighteenth birthday. She was wearing a white dress, while I was dressed rather casually. We were both smiling happily.Written on the back of the picture was a

I looked at her. She was the woman who had once sworn to spend her life with me.I had known her for the past seven years.I had seen her at her best and at her worst. I knew what she was like when she was flourishing and when she was worn out.But now, she looked like a stranger to me."Clementine, go home.""I won’t!""Go." I shut the door in her face. "And don’t come back."She wailed for a long time before the security came to take her away. The same night, Juniper came to have dinner with me."Is she gone?" she asked.I nodded."Are you sad?"I thought for a moment before shaking my head. "No, I’m not. It just feels… like I just took off a coat that I have been wearing for many years. I’m not used to how it feels, but it doesn’t feel bad."She looked gently at me. "Luke, can I ask you a question?""Go ahead.""Would you say yes if I proposed to date you now?"I was caught off guard. She chuckled. "Just kidding. I know you need time.""Juniper," I suddenly blurted

I want you to know that I never resented you."He looked up at me."You’re only twenty-two. You’re a young man who used the wrong approach to love someone. But it’s not the same in her case. She was the one who was supposed to protect me, but she ended up pushing me away."Stanley cried.I handed him a tissue. "You should go. Don’t do something like this ever again."He nodded before turning to leave.I watched as his figure disappeared into the crowd.Soon, my phone rang. It was a text from Juniper. "Are you free tonight? I’d like to take you somewhere."I replied, "Sure."That evening, she drove to pick me up.We dr

I took a deep breath. "Clementine, I’m done knocking."With that, I shut the door. She stayed outside for a long time. I heard her knocking and calling my name until her voice turned sore. Eventually, it turned into choking sobs.Still, I did not open the door.Juniper invited me to dinner with her the same evening. We went to the rooftop restaurant at the hotel. It boasted a panoramic view of Hafort’s skyline at night. When I arrived, she was already there."Is your hand feeling better?" she asked."Much better."As she proceeded to pour me tea, I noted how delicate her movements were."I heard Clementine is here," she spoke calmly.I nodded."Did you see her?""Yes.""What did she say?""She begged me to go back."Juniper picked up her teacup but did not look at me when she asked, "What did you think of it?"I turned to look at the city at night. Thousands of lights, and yet not one of them was mine. "I’m not getting back with her. What’s done is done, there’s no use

There were hundreds of unread messages.I read the latest ones."Luke, where are you?""Luke, I was wrong. Please come back.""I received the agreement to annul the engagement. I’m not signing it. It’s never going to happen.""I went to your family to look for you. Your Dad says you’re in Hafort. What are you doing over there?""Luke, quit scaring me…""Are you there to see Juniper Keegan? Do you know her? How could you trust her?""Luke, I'm going to Hafort tomorrow. Wait for me."The latest text was from this afternoon."I’m in Hafort right now. Which hotel are you at? Tell me so we can talk in person."I stared at the screen for ages. Then, I switched it off again before tossing it back to the bedside table.I heard the sound of waves crashing against something outside the window. I shut my eyes. She should manage to track me down by tomorrow. Given her resources, I was sure she could manage it.Fine, I would meet her. I would tell her everything that needed to be said

The plane landed in Hafort around two in the afternoon.Streaks of sunlight spilling through the glass dome of the arrival hall blinded my eyes.I squinted and dragged my suitcase with my uninjured hand. The cast on my left arm felt especially heavy. When I got to the exit, I spotted someone holding a sign spelling my name, so I approached them. The man holding the sign was a young man dressed in a black suit. He greeted me courteously. "Mr. Everett, Miss Keegan requested me to pick you up. The car is right outside."I followed him out of the airport. Before getting in the car, I glanced back at the terminal. I was now thousands of kilometers away from Ambrough, but her face would not stop flashing across my mind.I shook my head to brush off the thought before entering the car.The driver took me to downtown Hafort. The climate in Hafort was warmer than in Ambrough. I saw rows of trees I had never seen before lining the streets, and there was a damp, salty smell lingering in
