Chapter 2

مؤلف: Clarity
Jeremy flagged down a cab and said, "I won't be taking you home since I still have things to take care of at the clinic. I really hope you learn to have some self-respect. I honestly don't want to be friends with a homewrecker, Sebastian."

I suddenly realized that Jeremy wasn't there to watch the spectacle. He had purposely brought me there so I would find out about Hazel and Chris' wedding. I felt a sharp pang in my chest at that thought.

I then noticed that the cab driver was looking at me through the rearview mirror with a look of disgust, making me feel deeply uncomfortable.

I returned to my tiny 108-square-foot room, where I could see the entire room's layout in a single glance right after I pushed the door open. There was a four-foot-wide bed and a desk pushed right up against it, with a Hermes handbag placed on top of it.

Hazel had begged me for a designer handbag because she was competing for a supervisor position. She said she needed something expensive to help her make a good impression, so I eventually spent half my annual salary on it.

She actually broke into a wide grin on the day I paid for that handbag, despite seeing my pained expression.

I suddenly recalled the ten-million-dollar Patek Philippe watch Hazel had given Chris. It turned out that she hadn't been laughing because she was happy about receiving a gift. She had been laughing at how broke I was.

I felt my eyes sting as I realized that my genuine feelings had been taken for granted. I grabbed a pair of scissors, cut the Hermes handbag, and tossed it into the trash.

I then hurriedly gathered Hazel's belongings, stuffed them into a suitcase, and tossed them outside. "It's over between us, Hazel. Get over here and pick up your belongings."

I blocked her and deleted her contact after sending the message. I collapsed onto the bed and stared blankly at the ceiling once that was done.

I suddenly recalled my second year in university. I was working a part-time job in the dining hall when I overheard Hazel complaining that she could barely afford to eat. I felt bad for her, so I gave her my lunchbox.

I remembered how she shot me a weird look back then, but I was too busy working to think much of it. I realized now that she probably thought I was a joke back then; after all, a broke student working his way through university had actually taken pity on the heiress of the shipping tycoon of Halport.

Hazel began pursuing me after that, and once we graduated, I followed her to Halport to make a living. Halport was a city where every inch of land was worth a fortune, and the rent was absurdly high. I had to pay 1,800 dollars every month just for this cramped 108-square-foot room.

I felt bad for Hazel, who had to work so hard to save for her own wedding fund, so I took care of the rent and every single daily expense.

Hazel eventually managed to save up 14,800 dollars, but she lost everything once she accidentally clicked a phishing link. She then donated the money she saved up to a young girl with leukemia. She accidentally rear-ended another car while working as a driver for hire after that.

She never managed to save up 12,000 dollars after eight years for the wedding. She didn't actually lack the 12,000 dollars. She simply had no intention of marrying me.

It was then that someone suddenly pushed open the door. Hazel, drenched from head to toe, rushed in and held me tightly. She buried her head in the crook of my neck, her voice trembling while saying, "I don't want to break up with you, Sebastian. I'll definitely marry you, so just wait for me a little longer."

I could feel her cold, wet clothes soaking through mine. I faltered for a moment and instinctively went to get a towel to dry her off. I suddenly saw the expensive Hermes handbag in the trash can and snapped back to my senses. I reached out and pushed her away, saying, "You're already married, Hazel."

Hazel froze for a moment, then tightened her arms around me. "My brother is gone, and my father has been unconscious ever since his brain hemorrhage, Sebastian.

"You don't understand the complicated world of wealthy families because you've never been part of that world. Chris is the only one who has the power to help me.

"You're the only one I'll love, though—and also the only one I want to marry. Can you wait six months for me, Sebastian, until I can stabilize the situation…"

Hazel's voice trailed off, making it hard for me to make out what she was saying.

I suddenly recalled something that happened a month ago, when we were getting ready to celebrate our eighth anniversary. She went pale after answering a call. She then told me that something had happened to her family and that she needed to leave for a while.

I handed her my bank card, which held the 112,000 dollars I had saved after working for five years for a house down payment.

I worked desperately to save money for a marital home because she kept promising that we'd move back to my hometown, get married, and settle down as soon as she saved up enough money for the wedding.

"I really don't understand the matters between wealthy families, but I've already waited for you for eight years. I don't want to wait anymore. I've promised Mom that if I'm not married by 27 years old, I'll return to my hometown and let her set me up on blind dates."

I had intended to put the marital home under Bianca's name alone, offer her 130,000 dollars for the wedding fund, and hand over all my salary. Bianca, however, insisted that we put both of our names on the house, returned all the wedding gifts, and even bought us a brand-new BMW.It was only then that I realized a woman who genuinely wanted to marry you would always put herself in your shoes and think about your needs. She would give her all to build a family and a home together with you.Having finally secured her position at the company, Hazel came to Caldoria to look for me. She walked right into my successful proposal, catching Bianca and me in a tight embrace. She rushed over, grabbing me and pulling me away without giving me a chance to speak. "I've missed you every single second for the past six months, Sebastian! How could you be so heartless and not even give me a call?"She gripped my hand so tightly that I couldn't help but wince from the pain.Bianca, who was usually

Sebastian's POVI received a message from Mom right after I stepped out of the hillside villa half a month ago. Thanks to the 112,000 dollars Bianca Livingston had transferred to the hospital in time, Elira received her much-needed surgery.I booked a flight home overnight. It was truly fortunate that the surgery went well, as by the time I arrived at the hospital, Elira had already been wheeled out of the OR and was lying peacefully in her hospital bed. I couldn't help but break down in tears when I looked at her deathly pale complexion."You have nothing to worry about since the doctor said the surgery went well, Sebastian," Mom said, her eyes brimming with tears as she patted my back. "You probably haven't had a chance to eat yet, right? Do you mind taking him to grab a meal, Bianca?"Bianca, the stunning woman in the hospital ward, nodded and extended her hand to me. "It's nice to meet you, Mr. Lister. I'm Bianca Livingston."She was the daughter of Dad's former comrade-in-arm

Hazel was swamped in the days that followed. Her father showed no signs of waking up, so her uncles started vying for power and recruiting shareholders, triggering nonstop infighting within the company.Thankfully, with the backing of the Lussier family, Hazel managed to keep her head above water. She couldn't wait to drive to the villa to see Sebastian once she caught her breath. She realized that she had been ignoring him for half a month, so she went out of her way to buy his favorite palmiers before heading to the villa. She pushed open the door, only to find that the villa was completely empty. She noticed that there was no sign that anyone had ever stayed there. She suddenly felt a surge of dread. She took out her phone and tried calling Sebastian, but the call wouldn't go through. She thought of something before shaking her head with resignation. She returned to her car and drove to the old neighborhood. She arrived at the cramped apartment where they had lived together for

Third-Person POVUpon seeing Sebastian walk away despondently, Hazel felt a pang in her chest. She instinctively wanted to chase after him, but one look at Chris made her stop dead in her tracks. She had already humiliated Chris enough when she went to visit Sebastian during their wedding night, so she couldn't possibly humiliate him again tonight, especially since all their friends were present.Chris handed Hazel a glass of champagne and said, "It's just 112,000 dollars, Hazel—just treat it as severance pay. Sebastian stuck around with you for eight years, so I'm not going to be stingy about it.""You're truly the heir to the casino tycoon, Chris! You're such a high roller!""You truly hit the jackpot marrying Chris, Hazel! You'd better treat him well; otherwise, we won't let you hear the end of it!"Hazel's best friends chuckled and playfully teased her.Hazel chuckled too, taking the champagne and clinking glasses with her best friends. "You don't need to tell me that. You'

Mom continued, "Elira got very worked up after watching Jeremy's interview. She was distracted while she was walking and didn't see a construction worker drop a rebar rod, which went straight through her stomach! She can be operated on, but the hospital's refusing to start until we pay upfront. "They said they'll have to move her to the back of the queue for the OR if we don't get the money together within the hour. There's no time for us to take out a mortgage against the house now. Do you have 44,000 dollars on you right now, Sebastian?"I could feel my heart beating violently as I broke out in a cold sweat. "You have nothing to worry about, Mom! I have 112,000 dollars on me, so I'll transfer it to you right away!"I opened the banking app and frantically tried to send the 112,000 dollars I had saved up for the down payment for the house to Mom, but the transaction failed. I then recalled that I had handed my bank card over to Hazel a month ago when she told me she had a family e

Hazel clung to me tightly, her eyes bloodshot. "You've been with me for eight years! How could you go on a blind date with someone else? I won't allow it, Sebastian!"I was fuming as I shoved her away. "You're already married to Chris! You have no right to interfere in my life anymore, Hazel!"Hazel explained, "It was only a marriage of convenience! You've already spent eight years waiting for me, so why can't you wait another six months? You have nothing to worry about, Sebastian. Chris is pretty laid-back about this. He won't bother you as long as you don't make a scene."I was trembling all over with rage as I pushed her straight out the door. "Get out! I never want to see you again!"Hazel continued to softly coax me into becoming her kept man through the closed door. "How about I buy you a villa, Sebastian? You can bring your parents over to Halport, and I'll give you 15,000 dollars a month for living expenses. "You won't have to get up early and cram onto the subway for wor
