Halport's shipping tycoon is marrying off his daughter and making a high-profile scene by grandly parading 99 wedding ships across Lumina Harbor. Jeremy Sutton, my best friend, excitedly drags me over to watch the spectacle. I instinctively take a photo to send to my girlfriend, Hazel Shepherd. I suddenly see two familiar figures in my camera frame. Hazel, who is supposed to be working overtime, is wearing a diamond-encrusted satin wedding dress and holding the hand of her childhood friend, Chris Lussier, as they board the magnificent lead ship. I freeze for a moment, then angrily try to rush forward and confront them. But Jeremy grabs me and holds me back. "Chris has always been Hazel's fiance. You're just humiliating yourself if you walk over and cause a scene. "I feel so bad for Hazel, who pretended to be poor and stayed with you in that cramped apartment for eight years. I'm saying this as your best friend—show some self-respect and don't be a shameless homewrecker." I feel completely numb inside as the cold sea breeze brushes against my face. It turns out that the woman I have been with for eight years has been lying to me all along. Even Jeremy, my best friend, has known the truth all along and hides it from me. I suddenly receive a message from Hazel. "I just got off work and took on two more tutoring gigs, Sebastian. I'll work hard and save up the 12,000 dollars for the wedding fund soon. I'll then head back to your hometown to get married to you, Sebastian." I look at the wealthy heiress standing on the ship, finding the whole thing utterly ridiculous. "You don't have to do that anymore. Mom is telling me to return home for a blind date."

Chapter 1

Sebastian's POV

In that instant, the reporters from Halport rushed in, and Hazel Shepherd, my girlfriend, glanced back and noticed me standing at the edge of the crowd. She subconsciously withdrew her arm from Chris Lussier's, her smile faltering. "Didn't we say we'd keep this from him? Who invited him over?"

She pushed through the crowd, holding up the heavy, elaborate train of her wedding dress as she stepped off the ship. She rushed toward me recklessly amid a chorus of gasps, her eyes brimming with panic.

"You have to hear me out, Sebastian! I didn't mean to keep this from you. I was just worried the difference in our backgrounds would make you feel bad about yourself. Chris and I are just putting on a show here. Please don't cause a scene, alright, Sebastian?"

I held back my tears and pulled my hand away from hers. "You're still trying to fool me, even at this point!"

I looked past her at Chris, who was dressed in a custom-made designer suit, looking as distinguished as a prince. I then looked at the Patek Philippe watch on his wrist, the one that Hazel, the heiress of the shipping tycoon, had dropped ten million dollars for at auction.

Hazel and I had been together for eight years. She always said her family was tight on money and couldn't afford to pay for a wedding.

She claimed that she was worried that my family would look down on her, so she started saving up for it back in university. She couldn't even save up 12,000 dollars after eight years, though.

Jeremy Sutton, my best friend, furrowed his brow and asked, "Do you really want to ruin the wedding of the century, Sebastian? You honestly don't have the right to cause a scene here. Why can't you be more reasonable about this whole situation, Sebastian?"

I stared at Jeremy in disbelief. He had been my best friend for over a decade. He had nowhere to go after his parents got divorced, so I brought him home and shared half my parents' love with him. I even cut back on my own expenses and begged my parents to cover his tuition and living costs for high school and university.

Yet now, Jeremy was standing up for someone else and turning against me.

Chris chuckled softly as he walked up to Hazel's side. He then shook his head at me, saying, "Your best friend knows how to read the room better than you, Sebastian. Do you even realize what kind of event this is today? What gave you the nerve to come here and cause a scene?"

I felt a sharp pang in my chest and unconsciously raised my voice, yelling, "She's been my girlfriend for eight years, and now she's marrying another man! Do I not deserve an explanation for this ridiculous situation?"

"Shut up! Do you want to announce this embarrassing mess to the entire world?" Hazel hissed under her breath just as she sensed that the reporters from Halport caught wind of the scandal and swarmed closer. She then turned to Jeremy and said, "Please take Sebastian away and get him to calm down, Jeremy."

Jeremy nodded, pinning my shoulder in a tight grip. "You can rest assured that I'll keep Sebastian in line. He won't ruin your wedding, Hazel."

It wasn't until Hazel and Chris walked arm in arm back onto the ship, surrounded by the adoring crowd, that Jeremy finally let go of me. He then sighed with envy, saying, "They really do make a perfect couple. You should just heed my advice, Sebastian. You don't belong in their world, so just give up and stop bothering them."
