Chapter 2

Author: Mohini
Isaac's POV

Sherry froze for a moment before dragging me straight out of the private room.

Once we were away from the noise inside, she finally lost her patience with me.

"Isaac Jahn, what the hell are you trying to do? I've been trying to help you fit into my circle. Can't you see that?"

Back then, I didn't want her to have to choose between her friends and me. So, I drank alcohol that I didn't like, tried to get along with people I wasn't fond of, and forced myself to talk about things I didn't care about.

I thought that if I kept trying, I'd eventually become one of them. But no matter how much I compromised, they always took Cole's side. They deliberately left me sitting on the sidelines.

I would always be an outsider in their little circle.

Cole followed us out and shoved the ring back into my hand while lecturing me. "You don't have to force her to give up her friends. When her company ran into trouble, we were the ones who helped her raise the money to get through it. We're friends who'd go to hell and back for each other.

"You don't drink. So when she wants someone to drink with, she can only come to me. And when something's bothering her, I'm the one she can talk to. Like when your mom got into that car accident.

"You should reflect on why you can never seem to blend with the crowd instead of grilling her."

After my mom's accident, I'd wandered the streets in a daze and nearly collapsed from exhaustion. In my desperation, I'd called Sherry over and over again. She hadn't answered a single call.

I'd later learned that she'd been drinking with Cole to drown her sorrows.

My heart sank to my stomach with a dull, crushing ache. I couldn't even bring myself to clench my hand around the ring.

Sherry finally turned on Cole with a grim expression and ordered, "Get back inside."

Cole rolled his eyes and waved the auction card in his hand. "I won't bother you guys. They're still playing the auction game in there. I'm putting my room up for auction tonight. If you two don't want to play, that's your loss."

Sherry's expression shifted as she stared in the direction he had gone.

Then she patted my arm and said, "You should get a ride home first. He's had too much to drink. He'll probably do something stupid again later."

I stared at the ring in my palm and suddenly found all the effort I'd put in over the years utterly ridiculous.

As soon as I reached home by cab, a new post from Cole popped up on my Instagram feed.

He wrote, "True friends have no problem sleeping in the same bed!"

In the photo, he was wrapped in a towel with his abs barely concealed. Sherry lay beside him, fast asleep.

The comments section blew up.

"Wait, you two really slept together? Mad respect!"

"Sherry's so petty. We were supposed to drink with you until sunrise, but she kicked us all out after offering us 30 grand."

"If Isaac sees this, I bet he's going to cry. Haha."

I didn't cry.

Instead, I liked the post.

A short while later, Sherry texted me.

"What are you trying to achieve by giving the post a Like? Are you trying to piss me off? Your dad used to do the same thing and drove your mom away with his crazy behavior. And now, you're doing the same? I thought you'd have learned your lesson by now."

I stared at those words for a long time.

My mom had cheated on my dad. When he threw the evidence in her face, she had left without looking back, taking her lover with her.

My dad had eventually ended up in a psychiatric hospital. Every day, he rambled about how he didn't want me to get married because he was afraid I'd end up following in his footsteps.

But I had simply smiled and said to him, "Dad, Sherry is different."

Looking back now, I realized she wasn't so different after all.

I called my dad, who was still at the psychiatric hospital. "Dad, I'll listen to you. I'm not getting married anymore. I've agreed to join my company's overseas project. It'll be a closed-door assignment."

Isaac's POVSherry froze and stared at me in disbelief.Cole scoffed and cut in. "Can you cut the act already? She's giving you an out. Just take it. Keep this up, and maybe she'll really be done with you."He looked stubbornly at Sherry and asked, "Right?""Shut up!" Sherry shoved him away. "If all you do is talk nonsense, get your ass back home!"Cole glared at me before storming off. Sherry turned around and was about to say something to me, but I turned and walked back into the restaurant. For the next few days, Sherry didn't show up again. My life returned to normal. I did occasionally notice someone watching me from a distance, though. Then, just as I walked out of the office one day, Cole stopped me. "We need to talk."He took me to a nearby coffee shop and spoke bluntly. "Sherry's practically losing her mind over you. She's barely eating or drinking. Do you really have the heart to do this to her? I never would've guessed someone as mild-mannered as you could have a hea

She clearly still couldn't believe I would really leave her.I gave her messages a cursory glance before blocking her number. I was done putting up with her arrogance and the disdainful treatment from her friends.A week after I left, Sherry's friends took turns calling me."Sherry's practically losing her mind trying to find you. Just call her back. Don't be so heartless.""If we wronged you somehow, you could've taken it out on us. Sherry didn't do anything wrong.""Is this because of Cole? He's already moved to another city and cut ties with Sherry."There was a whole crowd talking over each other on the other end of the phone.I was about to hang up when Sherry finally spoke, her voice trembling with emotion. "Isaac, can't we just talk things out? Do you really have to take things this far? Where are you? I'll come pick you up right now. Let's sit down and talk."I fell silent for a mome

Are you sure you didn't make a mistake?"The guard immediately called over the hotel manager, who checked the records and informed her of the situation."Ms. Schmidt, this wedding is indeed for another couple. Your groom, Mr. Jahn, canceled the wedding himself. He said he wasn't getting married anymore.""What?" Sherry blurted, her frown deepening. She quickly pulled up the refund records. Sure enough, Isaac's signature was right there.Sherry said in disbelief, "How could he have canceled the wedding?"Just then, Cole and the bridesmaids hurried over. After hearing what had happened, Cole let out a mocking laugh. "I didn't expect him to have that much backbone. Who's he trying to make a point to? Is he doing all this just for me to see? Marrying someone like that would be-""Shut up!" Sherry snapped. She had never yelled at him like that before. Cole froze and imm

Isaac's clothes had been cleared out of the closet too.Sherry rubbed her eyes, finally realizing that what she was seeing was real. But after only a second, she let out a cold laugh. "So he ran away from home, huh? It doesn't matter since he'll still come crawling back on the wedding day."She didn't even realize that her grip on the doorknob had tightened as she said that. That evening, Cole showed up at her place with the others and mocked Sherry to her face. "I told you she was a coward. Sure enough, she came back early. What a disappointment."Her friend couldn't help laughing either. "She was acting so tough before. Who would've thought she'd chicken out this fast?"Sherry cleared her throat and nodded toward the bedroom. "If I hadn't come back early, I wouldn't have known Isaac had a backbone. He ran away from home just to get a re

Isaac's POVA few hours before I was supposed to leave, I took a cab to the psychiatric hospital to visit my dad. When I walked into his room, I was stunned to find a man and a woman standing beside his bed.As I got closer, I realized it was Sherry and Cole.A bad feeling immediately rose in my heart. "Why did you bring him here?" I asked Sherry.Cole pursed his lips and answered for her. "I'm not some kind of monster. Why can't I come visit Mr. Jahn? I even bought him a new outfit."I turned around.Dad was wearing a white burial robe. He was clapping happily at his reflection in the mirror and saying, "Looks good."My mind went completely blank. "What the hell is wrong with you two?"I was about to confront Cole, but Sherry immediately stepped in front of me. "Cole meant well. He just didn't know what it was. He thought it symbolized a long and healthy life."Cole raised an eyebrow and nodded. "I didn't know what a burial robe was. I just thought it looked elegant, so I b

Isaac's POVThe next morning, I was woken by the raucous laughter coming from the living room. When I opened the door, I found all of Sherry's friends gathered outside.Cole was sitting in the middle, wearing my wedding suit. "This thing is way too tight. On the actual wedding day, everyone's going to get a full view of the groom's pathetic physique."The room erupted in laughter that shook the ceiling. "Exactly! Haha!"Sherry just sat there without saying a word in my defense. The moment she saw me, the smile disappeared from her face. She came over and reached for my hand. She said, "Why didn't you reply to my messages last night? You had me worried sick all night."I ignored her and looked at her with bloodshot eyes. "How can you just sit there and listen while they make those disgusting jokes about me?"She froze and searched for the right words to say.Cole immediately stepped in to smooth things over. "How is it disgusting? It's right there in the open. What exactly ar
