Sarah POV

Monday | 4:15 PM

The meeting had run over. Again.

Gabriel had barely let me sleep last night after we returned from the lake, his body still adjusting from our weekend away. I didn’t blame him. It was a shift, a beautiful one, yes, but a shift nonetheless. He had clung to me all night like an anchor in a storm.

And now, here I was, bone-tired and running on two oat milk lattes and pure resolve, staring across a polished boardroom table at Adrian.

He was watching me. Not in the sharp, business-focused way. This was different. Quieter. Personal. His tie was a bit loose, sleeves rolled up to his elbows.

His laptop sat open, forgotten. My last slide still glowed on the screen behind me, quarterly projections and international expansion forecasts, but his attention had long since drifted.

“Sarah,” Adrian said as the others filed out. “Can we talk for a moment?”

I looked down at my notes. “If this is about the client dinner Wednesday, I already spoke with,”

“It’s not about work,”

Sarah’s POVThursday | 3:45 PMJoint Venture MeetingThe room carried a subtle scent of citrus and fresh leather, a trademark of Alessandro’s group. The boardroom featured glossy marble surfaces, windows from floor to ceiling, and an atmosphere dense with tension. The elongated table was adorned with elegant black folders, espresso cups, and the meticulously composed faces of influential individuals accustomed to high-pressure situations.I sat with my tablet angled in front of me, nodding as one of Alessandro’s project managers outlined the updated integration timelines. I was fully present. At least, I tried to be.My mind was still echoing with Adrian’s voice from last night. “I miss us.”No. No room for that. I locked the thought away with everything else that belonged to the past. Alessandro sat two seats down, stiff, unreadable, flipping through the pages of the brief. He hadn’t looked at me once since I entered the room. Which only made the space between us more unbearable.“Lo

Adrian POVWednesday | 7:20 PMThe restaurant hadn’t changed. It remains faintly lighted, with salt-stained windows providing a foggy glimpse of the nighttime traffic. The faint hum of talking and clinking silverware enveloped me like a cloud, yet I scarcely heard anything.I was watching the door.It had been years since Sarah and I sat across from each other at this restaurant. Back then, we were still married, at least on paper. In public, we wore the mask of a polished power couple, the kind that people in our world admired and envied. But behind closed doors, the truth was far uglier. While Sarah tried to breathe life into a dying marriage, I was already suffocating it with my own selfishness. I was seeing Jessica on the side, recklessly. I convinced myself it was harmless, justified it as Jessica as my love, and Sarah as liability. The dinners we had at this very table were part of a script, a performance for our family, media, and our curated image. I’d show up in a tailored s

Sarah POVSaturday | 9:12 AMSarah's Apartment. The knock came just as I settled Gabriel into his high chair with a half-mashed banana and his favorite teether giraffe. I wasn’t expecting anyone. Not this early. Not after the week we’d had. I padded barefoot to the door, brushing a loose strand of hair behind my ear, still in a faded sleep shirt and leggings with one of Gabriel’s oatmeal handprints near my hip.I opened the door, and there he was.Alessandro.In jeans and a navy sweater, casual in a way I rarely saw him. No tailored suit, no phone glued to his ear. Just him with his hair slightly wind-swept and a duffel slung over one shoulder. And a car seat carrier in his free hand.My brows lifted. “Are you having a midlife crisis?”He smirked. “Close. I’m kidnapping you. Both of you.”“Excuse me?”“Weekend getaway,” he said, his voice low and calm. “No, Adrian. No press. No emails. Just you, me, and Gabriel.”I blinked. He leaned slightly forward, lowering his voice. “I already cl

Sarah POVManhattan | 8:00 PMThe rooftop was empty when I arrived, just the echo of my heels against concrete and the low hum of city noise below. Manhattan stretched out beneath me in a web of lights, oblivious to the storm I’d spent the day faking in that glass conference room. Then I saw him.Alessandro stood near the edge, framed by the night, his jacket off, sleeves rolled, hair slightly tousled like he’d run his hand through it more than once since the meeting. He turned at the sound of my approach, and in that moment, there was no tension. No company. No Adrian. No game.Just us.He murmured, "I'm glad you came," with a crooked smile that hadn't been on my face for weeks.Tired. Raw. Almost shy.I walked past him toward the table set up under the overhang, low lights, real candles, two plates, and a bottle of the Montepulciano I’d once said reminded me of Amalfi summers. Of course, he remembered."You're lucky I didn't throw this wine at you," I muttered as I settled into the

Sarah POVNext weekI’d never walked into a meeting so aware of every pair of eyes in the room. The glass conference room on the top floor of Alessandro’s company headquarters was as sleek and intimidating as ever, polished wood, minimalist decor, floor-to-ceiling windows framing the Manhattan skyline like a taunt. The kind of place built for power plays.I straightened my blazer and kept my expression cool. Ester shot me a small, reassuring look from across the table as we took our seats. Adrian walked in just after us, exuding easy confidence as he greeted the executive team like he owned the room. And Alessandro? He was already there. Positioned at the head of the table dressed in a crisp navy suit, arms crossed, jaw clenched. When his gaze connected with mine, nothing stirredNo heat. No softness.Just cold calculation. Just business.Exactly what we’d agreed on.I hadn’t spoken to him outside of our encrypted Signal chats and one short phone call since that night. We’d promised o
