Sarah POV

The office had that late-afternoon hush, a quiet that came when most people had left or were counting down the final minutes before doing so. The files spread before me were lit by my desk lamp's small, warm glow. Instead, my very own mind kept drifting from the quarterly reports to something far more personal.

Upon the screen, a familiar name lit up when my phone buzzed.

Alessandro: Lunch?

I smiled to myself. “Have you eaten?” was the code; he didn’t mean “let's have lunch” really.

Me: Yes. I finished even the salad you insisted that I take.

Seconds later, he replied.

Alessandro: Good. Be certain that you stand up and stretch also."

I could picture him at his desk with his suit jacket off shirt sleeves rolled his intense gaze softening only when speaking to me.

“Yes, boss”, I replied back just before my fingers hovered over the screen.

A pause. Then—

Alessandro: Sweetheart, I would personally get you up from that chair if I were able.

I did laugh at the very thought. I type

  • Wedcuffed   Chapter 343

Alessandro POVThe morning began in the way I had always hoped it would.I used to carry fear's gnawing weight for Sarah, not under shadows, not with her past's echoes. No. This morning was light. The kind that is one with a forgiving feel.Gabriel's bright soft laughter spilled down the hall like sound sunlight. Ester chased him with his overalls, and the boy squealed with joy so infectious my chest ached wonderfully. As the warm, sweet scent curled into the kitchen, as the batter bubbled into pancakes on the hissing pan. I hummed softly, not any certain tune though just something steady that was matching morning's rhythm.I glanced at Sarah then over my shoulder. Her hair was loose around her shoulders as she sat there at the dining table. Her belly felt circles from one absent hand. I took at the sight. My throat tightened. Nine months. Almost. She never grumbled, never wavered, but she bore both fatigue and power in that body every day. I always looked forward to that though the b

Sarah POVThe morning began like mornings usually do.Gabriel's warm melodic laughter drifted down the hallway as Ester tried to coax him into his tiny overalls. Alessandro's quiet hum, moving to the rhythm from the sizzling pan, mingled with the faint sweetness from pancakes and freshly brewed coffee. One hand held my belly's swell as I sat at the dining table my other hand tracing circles on my mug. Nine months, almost. Just another few weeks were to be expected before arrival of the baby. However, the baby came early. For urgency was nowhere to be found for today, but my body had grown so heavy in ways unimaginable before now. The home felt alive with ordinary comfort offered. That same comfort was all of that which mattered. There it was, yet even then. A strange, low ache was pulling within my abdomen. It was persistent and not sharp like distant thunder faintly rolling before a storm. I froze then, with my hand pressed softly against the curve of my stomach, and I felt then the

Sarah POVSundayThe late afternoon sunlight spilled into our living room windows, with warm golden stripes painting the hardwood floor. I was curled up on that sofa with but one leg tucked just beneath me. Comfortably the other leg rested on the ottoman. As a constant reminder of the impending growth of our family in a couple of months, my swollen belly pressed against my knees whenever I shifted.Gabriel was sitting on soft rug among wooden blocks and stuffed animals. I watched him as he played with that tiny blue truck Alessandro bought him last month. He was muttering alone using few real words plus much sweet rubbish. He also tried to place two blocks one over the other. His fine little brows knitted together in concentration just like Alessandro’s did for a design sketch. That well known ache came to my heart.Eighteen months. Eighteen months did characterize my baby boy. He was still my little bundle somehow in addition to a small determined person opining about stuffed animal

Sarah POVThe house had settled into that quiet stillness after a full and long day comes to pass. Upstairs, Gabriel was asleep. Only sound filled his nursery with his soft even breaths. I had just finished putting away the last few dishes after dinner. The dishwasher's warm hum, a type of white noise, filled the kitchen.Lauren was in my office during this afternoon, she offered a sincere apology; her hands trembled; the memory still lingered. At that moment I had said, “I never want Gabriel to be like Adrian. I never want anyone to suffer what I went through,” I had felt something strengthen inside me. It wasn't just wishing, it was vowing. A boundary deep enough toward carving the rest of my life's guide.I did move to the living room as the glow of a soft lamp pooled in the corner. That is when I did notice Alessandro near the window, and also his silhouette was sharp toward the city lights just beyond. Gabriel stirred a bit so he held him in his arms. Our little boy was curled up

Sarah POVThe office was in such a silent state on this Thursday afternoon. Tall windows sent soft golden light to warm the polished wooden floor. Blueprints as well as material samples for the Carmichael project scattered all over my desk now. My attention drifted toward my phone as I scrolled through photos of Gabriel at daycare that Alessandro had sent earlier on.I heard the faint, cautious throat clearing bring me back since the door opening was silent.I looked up as Lauren Parker stood there.A simple dress existed under her beige wool coat, silver hair getting pinned neatly back, but her hands twisted together just like she wasn’t so sure she belonged here.My voice, carrying with it surprise and guardedness, spoke “Lauren,” I then said. “I wasn’t expecting you.”“I know,” she replied softly, since she stepped inside and closed the door behind her. “I was afraid that you would tell me not to come, but I… I should have then called.”Her voice broke slightly on the final words,

Sarah POVThe drive back from the doctor’s office was quiet and yet it was not awkwardly so. His thumb brushed slowly, absent circles as if that movement could anchor Alessandro in the moment that we had just shared, with Alessandro's hand staying on my thigh. The baby's heartbeat sounded steady and strong; it was real. That sound remained in my mind. When we stepped into the penthouse, Gabriel came toddling toward us with Ester, his little legs working double-time.He squealed, “Dada!” with arms up.At once, all of Alessandro’s face softened up. He did press a kiss to his hair as he scooped Gabriel up. “Hey, little man. Guess what? “You will assist us now. Today we need that assistance.”From Gabriel, big, curious eyes blinked at him. “Hee?”With a smile, Alessandro gently corrected, “Help.” “We are starting on the room that will be for your baby sister.”I laughed. My purse was set there down. “We don't know if it’s a girl“.He turned to me, and he also had within himself that unsha
