Chapter 3

Penulis: Sunny Enchmarch
After Patrick left, the officers escorted me out of the interrogation room. They looked at me like I was nothing but trash.

"Ariana, Officer Doyle has posted bail for you as a family member. You're free to go."

I had nowhere to go. I turned out my pockets and scraped together enough money for a plain black dress. Then I knelt beside my father's casket at the funeral home.

But soon, dozens of black cars, each decorated with extravagant wedding flowers, crashed straight through the gates of the funeral home. The black hearse carrying my father's coffin faced the convoy.

Patrick stepped out of the Rolls-Royce at the front. He wasn't wearing his uniform. Instead, he wore a finely tailored charcoal suit. Pinned to his lapel was the badge signifying his status as a decorated hero. His cold, stern face stood out against the storm of funeral petals. There was something about him that sent a chill down my spine.

"Get in the car, Ariana." He stood over me and looked down.

"Patrick, my dad just died, and you're already so eager to use his death to climb higher?"

Patrick's expression remained unchanged. He grabbed my wrist and forced the diamond ring onto my finger. "Jacob got what he deserved, but you're innocent." He whispered, his voice dripping with condescension. "You may be the daughter of a criminal, but since we're married, I'll protect you. In Hinton, only I can keep you safe."

I glanced at him before bursting into laughter. "Keep me safe? Patrick, you're just afraid I'll die too soon, and people will blame you for it, right? After all, if it weren't for my dad, you'd have been dead a long time ago."

"Ariana, don't get the wrong idea about Patrick." Lena, who was dressed in red, looped her arm through mine. "He's doing this for your own good. Those people you owe money to could tear you apart. But if you marry Patrick now, they won't dare lay a finger on you."

She leaned closer, putting on an affectionate smile. "Come on. Take off that depressing dress and put on the wedding dress. Mr. Walker will be able to rest in peace knowing you have someone to take care of you."

Lena reached out and pressed her fingers hard against the infected wound on the back of my hand.

"Ahh!" My vision went black from the pain. Cold sweat soaked my back as I instinctively yanked my hand away.

Lena stumbled into a puddle, and her temple slammed against Dad's black gravestone. Her blood trickled down in the rain.

"Lena!" Patrick panicked and pushed me away.

I fell into a puddle as jagged stones slashed my palms.

"Ariana, you're truly beyond saving," Patrick scolded as he rushed over to scoop Lena up. It was as if I were some kind of heinous villain.

"Patrick, I'm fine… Ariana is just too overwhelmed by grief." Lena huddled in his arms, trembling. Her fingers clung tightly to his shirt collar, deliberately exposing the bruise I'd supposedly caused. "As long as Ariana can calm down, I'll even kneel to her."

I looked at her. "Sure. Didn't you want me to marry Patrick? Then get on your knees in front of my dad's gravestone. I'll marry him after that. He'll be praised by everyone and rise through the ranks."

Lena's voice was thick with emotion. "Fine! I'll do anything for Patrick!"

But before she could kneel, Patrick pulled her back up. He looked at me with nothing but loathing and indifference, and gripped my wrist. "Ariana, you're marrying me today, no matter what."

I stared at him before kicking the dirt at his feet. Mud splattered across his polished shoes. The wind tore through the funeral flowers, scattering petals across the graveyard. I laughed until tears streamed from the corners of my eyes.

"Patrick, remember this. I'm your reckoning."

Patrick stopped dead in his tracks. He raised his hands, his voice trembling. "Come at me. This was all my fault. Let Ariana go."Sting laughed, her whole body shaking. The blade grazed my neck, leaving a thin line of blood. "Do you know what Jacob said to me before he died?"Patrick's breath hitched.Sting leaned in close to my ear, deliberately raising her voice so Patrick could hear. "He told me not to hurt his daughter." Her eyes gleamed with the thrill of revenge. "Now I'll make you watch her die."She dragged me into the elevator with her. The doors slid shut as Patrick's desperate screams echoed outside. There were only the two of us inside. A sudden feeling of weightlessness washed over me. Sting pressed the button for the rooftop.Sting turned and brought her mangled face close to mine. "Ariana, are you scared?"I stared into her deranged eyes. "I'm just scared you'll die a quick death."Sting sneered, and the tip of the blade pierced my shoulder. Pain shot through my b

Sting didn't even try to fight back. She just let Patrick pin her to the floor, shards of glass digging into her as blood ran from her mangled jaw down her neck. She kept laughing through it all, the sound like some demon crawling out of hell.Sting taunted, "Harder, Patrick. You didn't hesitate like this when you blew Jacob's head open."Patrick's eyes were bloodshot. Blood and tears mixed with the grime on his face and dripped onto hers. He raised his fist and slammed it into her face.Once.Twice.The sound of bone cracking made my skin crawl.Sting's nose collapsed. The face she'd spent three years sculpting was instantly reduced to blood and mangled flesh.Patrick had completely lost his mind. All he could think about now was Dad lying in a pool of blood. All he wanted was to tear the monster in front of him apart.Leaning against my hospital bed, I watched them fight. The pain from my wound kept me alert.Patrick seized the IV stand beside him. He hauled it up, aiming f

"There's one more video." I kept my voice low as I pressed play. "Patrick, see for yourself who you've protected all these years. See who she really is."The screen flickered. The real Lena was tied to a metal chair in a basement where half the lights were out. Water had pooled across the floor. Her hair clung to her face, and blood stained the corners of her mouth. She slowly lifted her head toward the camera. Her eyes were swollen from crying. "Patrick… Help me…"Sting, dressed in red, sat opposite her, casually playing with a metal hammer. She smiled at Lena. "Louder. Make sure your brother can hear you clearly."The hammer came down, and Lena's scream burst through the speakers.Patrick went white. He stared at the screen, his lips moving soundlessly. Whatever he wanted to say never came. The video kept playing, the clock on the basement wall ticking on.Lena screamed. Then she begged. Eventually, there was nothing left but ragged breaths.Sting stayed seated across from he

Patrick stiffened, his face turning deathly pale. "Impossible… That can't be. The records said Jacob Walker was…""The records?" I sneered and pointed at Lena. "Why don't you ask your angelic sister? Ask her how she turned my dad from your fellow officer into a criminal. And how she erased his commendation and made you shoot him dead."Lena stopped crying. She looked at me, her face pale, as her body trembled uncontrollably. "No, I didn't! Patrick, she's talking nonsense, trying to sow discord between us!"I tossed the memory card to Patrick. "Patrick, see for yourself."In the video, Dad forced a grim smile at the camera. "Patrick, if you're seeing this, I'm probably already dead." He coughed up a large amount of blood, breathing heavily as he pressed hard against his wound."Someone hacked the internal network, and my records were wiped clean. Now you all see me as an unrepentant criminal." With trembling hands, Dad pulled out his badge with 66205 clearly engraved on the back. H

Patrick stared at me, his face drained of color. The rain plastered his hair to his forehead. For the first time, his usually composed face finally crumbled. He let go of his gun, and it plopped straight down into the mud.The officers behind him stared in shock."Captain Doyle!"Patrick didn't look back. Instead, he dropped to his knees in the mud.I stared at him, laughing. "Patrick, bow your head. Hard. I want to hear the impact. I want my dad to know that the great hero of Hinton kneels and bows before him."Patrick closed his eyes. Tears ran down his face. He pressed his forehead to the ground, then slammed it down again. And again.Blood soon seeped from the wound, mixing with the rain. The hatred I'd held inside for so long finally began to ease.I shoved Lena aside, and she fell into the mud. I walked over to Patrick and looked down at him. His face was covered with mud and blood. I smiled, pulling out the rusted badge and slapping it against his cheek. "Patrick, rememb

Lena laughed. She stepped into the mud in her high heels and stopped before Dad's gravestone. "Ariana, look. This is the father you were so proud of." She reached out and dragged her nails forcefully across Dad's name. The harsh scrape of her nails against the stone was horribly grating."His eyes were wide open when he died. I made that sound on purpose. I wanted to watch Patrick's bullet tear right through his head.""Keep your filthy mouth shut!" I lunged toward Lena, wanting to break her neck. But she was faster, stomping hard on the back of my wounded hand."Ahh!" I crumpled into the muddy water, the pain leaving me completely limp."Can't take it already?" Lena looked down at me condescendingly, a crazed thrill flickering in her eyes. "Are you wondering why, despite your dad having an official identity, there's no record of him in the system? Well, it's because I erased his records."I stared into her eyes for a long time. Then I asked, "Why?" I had to ask. After all, it wa
