Chapter 4

Author: Fido
The moment I turned around, the light in Jenny's room was turned on too.

Mom was already standing in the doorway. I had no idea how long she had been there. Her expression was dark, and none of her usual gentleness remained. The noise woke Jenny. She stared at the pills scattered across the floor, then leaped out of bed in a rage.

"Shannon, who gave you permission to touch my things?!" She carefully wiped each pill clean and counted them to make sure none were missing. Only then did she return them to the bottle.

Her nervous reaction made me even more certain that the pills were the key to her weight loss. I asked, "Jenny, what kind of medicine is this?"

She looked away and put the bottle into the back of a cabinet. She then said, "It's none of your business! I'm the one who should be asking the questions. Why did you sneak into my room in the middle of the night?!"

Mom stepped closer, and her displeasure was clear in her tone. "Shannon, did you find something?"

They closed in on me, studying me with strange expressions that sent a chill through my body. Even my voice was starting to shake as I said, "It… It's just that I noticed how much weight Jenny had lost, so I wanted to see if she was taking diet pills! I didn't find anything else!"

Mom's tense expression softened. She then pulled a medical report from her pocket. "Shannon, Jenny lost weight too quickly and became a little malnourished. Those are just multivitamins her doctor prescribed. The soap in the bathroom is also just ordinary medicated soap."

I stood there, confused. Something still felt wrong.

When Mom saw me doubting her, she went to her room and returned with a new bar of medicated soap and an unopened bottle of pills. "Try them yourself if you don't believe me."

She then sighed and walked away.

Jenny also shoved me out and slammed the door behind me. I stood alone in the dark living room, feeling as though everyone had abandoned me.

From then on, I bathed with the medicated soap for two hours every day and took one vitamin every night. Still, my weight did not drop, and it climbed even faster. The fat cells throughout my body multiplied so quickly that I could feel my skin stretching until it was going to split.

My weight broke every scale in the house. Whenever I stood in front of the mirror, I could almost see myself growing by the second.

My blood pressure had climbed to two hundred and twenty. The skin between some of my folds began to break down and smell because I could no longer clean it properly. Every time I used the bathroom, Mom had to support and wash me.

My company then called and told me not to come back, and my boyfriend sent me a message saying the sight of me disgusted him.

Even the neighbors pointed at me and whispered. "That young woman is so gluttonous! Her poor mother has to stay home and care for her all day!"

I stopped eating, clinging to one last hope. Maybe if I ate nothing, I would stop gaining weight.

Mom knelt in the living room and begged me through her tears to get gastric sleeve surgery.

I lay in bed, struggling to breathe. "I won't go."

I did not want to die from an infection after surgery as I had in my previous life.

I closed my eyes in despair. If I were to die anyway, I wanted to choose how it happened.

That evening, I wrote a suicide note and took a taxi alone to the outskirts of town. There was a wide, deep river running beneath a bridge there. I stood at the edge in a daze.

God, if you gave me another life, why did you let it end the same way?

I did not want to die, but the pain had made living unbearable.

Rain began to fall.

It was at this time that an older man who was passing by noticed me. He held on to my clothes and yelled, "Young lady! Get down from there right now! There's nothing worth committing suicide over!"

As we struggled, a large section of my shirt tore away.

Rain struck my bare back, and a sharp sting spread across my body.

My mind cleared in that instant, and I subconsciously cried out, "I know what's happening now!"

I grabbed Linda's head and forced her to face me as I screamed at her almost hysterically. "Tell me! "We've found evidence linking you to a murder committed many years ago. You need to come with us and cooperate with the investigation."Linda trembled so fiercely that she could not speak.Another officer approached Jenny. "Ms. Jenny Moore, the weight-loss biotechnology company registered under your name is suspected of illegally harvesting fat cells. You'll need to come with us as well."Jenny collapsed to the floor in an instant. When they committed those crimes, had they ever thought this day would come? The neighbors helped me pack, bought me a ticket, and sent me away from that miserable place.Firstly, I went to the state capital and asked specialists whether my body could still recover.Fortunately, the doctor said t

The furious neighbors urged me to stop protecting Mom and Jenny. My mom sat on the floor and begged as she sobbed. "Shannon, it's all my fault for not thinking things through! Jenny had nothing to do with this. Blame me if you want!"Jenny leaned against Mom's shoulder and shook her head in distress. What a touching display of motherly and daughterly love.I went into Mom's room and opened a cabinet. There, I found the safe in the corner and entered Jenny's birthday. It opened with a click. At the back, I found my adoption papers. I carried them into the living room and threw them onto the coffee table."Linda, I'm not even your biological daughter, am I?"Linda's expression froze. She had believed I might spare her because I had once loved her as my mother. But now, that was no longer possible. The neighbors looked at the papers, and the truth finally sank in."So, Shannon isn't your biological daughter? No wonder you treated her this way!""Linda, where's your conscience?!

Mom and Jenny immediately tried to stop me, trying to drag me back to my room and force the neighbors out. By then, everyone understood that something more was going on."Linda, what are you hiding from us exactly? Let Shannon speak!""That's right! Don't be afraid, Shannon! We can call the police if we need to."At the mention of the police, both my mom and Jenny panicked. Mom bit her lip as she tried to calm Jenny down.I turned to the confused neighbors and said, "I was just as confused as you until recently. I couldn't understand why I kept gaining weight no matter what I did. But now… I know."Under their stunned gazes, I slowly removed my shirt and exposed two enormous puncture needles on my back. One was red, the other was blue."What are those?""That's terrifying!"The neighbors recoiled in shock while Mom and Jenny lowered their heads.I took a deep breath. "Every night, Mom and Jenny would come into my room and inject a large dose of drugs through the red puncture.

My mom got up and wanted to close the door, but I stopped her. I picked up the remote and turned on the television as I said, "Alright, everyone! Just look at what they were doing for those five hours that I was missing!"The screen showed me placing my suicide note on the corner of the coffee table before walking out.As soon as I left, the lights came on. Mom and Jenny stepped out of their rooms, read the note, and exchanged a look. Then, they burst out laughing. They did not look for me once during those five hours. Only near the end did they run into the hallway and shout my name, performing for the neighbors.Everyone stared at the screen in shock."Linda, why would you do this?""Even if Shannon can't care for herself, you can't just let her die. She's still your daughter!"Mom sank to the floor and wailed in despair while Jenny comforted her. "Yes! I've had enough of Shannon! She's greedy and disobedient, and she let herself get this fat! Every day, I had to take care of

When I returned home, a crowd had already gathered outside my home. I could hear my mom's broken sobs coming from inside.Someone shouted, "Shannon's back!"Everyone turned to look at me."Shannon, get inside. Your mom has been looking everywhere for you.""How could you be so reckless? Look how badly you scared her."When Mom saw me, she stared in shock, then burst into tears. "Shannon, you're finally back! You nearly scared me half to death! If you died, I wouldn't go on living either! Despite her dramatic performance, it did not move me at all. "Mom, are you disappointed I'm still alive?"Before I could finish, Jenny slapped me so hard that my face turned to the side. "Shannon, what are you saying?! If you had the nerve, you should've died instead of leaving a note to scare us! Do you know how worried Mom was? She almost wanted to die with you! If she wanted you dead, why would she work so hard to care for you every day?"Jenny's face was red with rage as she glared at me,
