Chapter 1

Author: Forty-Nine
My father was the King of Hell. He complained that the underworld's schools were useless, teaching nothing but ghost nonsense, so he pulled some strings and sent me to study among the living instead.

He forgot to exchange my money before I left, though, and I arrived in the mortal world with hundreds of billions in underworld currency stuffed in my pockets.

When I started school, the teacher told us tuition was ten thousand dollars a year. I'd never seen such a small figure in my life, so with a wave of my hand, I handed the principal a million dollars.

He thought he'd struck it rich, but the moment he realized it was underworld currency, he immediately filed paperwork to get me a need-based scholarship instead. Not only did he waive all my tuition and fees for the next three years, he made a point of telling every teacher to look out for me.

"The poor kid's all alone in the world at his age, and he's not quite right in the head either. It's just so sad."

On the first day of school, the teacher had us fill out our personal information, including our home address. A classmate asked where I lived.

I thought about how every ghost in the underworld called my father the King of Hell. If he was a king, then surely we lived in a palace. But the second I said that, everyone around me burst out laughing so hard they nearly fell out of their seats.

Someone else asked how big my house was. The history teacher had once said the biggest palace in the world was the Palace of Versailles. Honestly, in the several hundred years I'd been alive, I'd never once managed to walk the whole length of my own house, so by that math, my house was probably about the same size as Versailles.

The moment I said that, the laughter around me only got louder.

"I'm dying. He actually thinks he's some kind of prince. Guess he hasn't heard the French monarchy fell two centuries ago."

"I used to think he was just putting on an act. Turns out there's really something wrong with his head!"

"It's not just his head. Something's wrong with him mentally too. He even tried to pay for things with underworld currency."

My father always said humans were clever. I didn't see it. I must have answered the same questions a hundred times, yet people kept asking me the exact same things, over and over, for all three years of high school.

Next time I went home, I'd have to tell Agnes to stop making so much of her special soup. Humans clearly didn't have the memory for it anyway.

My father wanted me to stay among the living for eighteen years before coming home. Once the finals were over, I figured the time was almost up. I had maybe another week before I could finally go home.

While I was packing up my things, a group of boys walked up to ask me, yet again, where I lived. I was used to their forgetfulness by now.

"The palace," I said flatly.

They exchanged a look, then burst out laughing.

"A crown prince who lives in a palace but still needs a poverty scholarship?"

"I heard when he paid tuition, it was in underworld currency, and he handed a million at a time. What a baller."

"His Highness here is quite the daydreamer too. He introduced himself once by saying his family had more servants than he could count!"

A voice cut in from behind us, telling them to stop.

"All right, that's enough laughing!"

Tyler Knight, the class heartthrob, pretended to come to my defense.

"Come on, you're being way too harsh on Nico!"

"Sure, Nico's a little slow and likes to make things up, but he's never hurt anyone. Give the guy a break."

Tyler was supposedly speaking up for me, so why did it feel like he was actually insulting me?

"I wasn't lying," I said, cutting him off.

The corner of Tyler's mouth curled up, and his eyes flicked with something sly.

"Well then, why don't we all take a class trip this summer? Let's make Nico's house the destination."

He shot me a look that was anything but friendly. "What do you say, Nico? Your house is supposedly so big, surely it can fit all of us, right?"

The underworld wasn't a place for tears, not while there were still sins waiting to be punished.By the time the ghost officers dragged Tyler out, he'd gone completely bald, without a single patch of intact skin left on his body, and his face had been torn to shreds. It was so gruesome that even I found it hard to look at.Of the group that had come with Tyler, the guilty ones stayed behind, while the innocent ones went to drink Agnes's broth and return to the mortal world.Once everything was settled, the Black Guard came to fetch me for a meeting with my father. I knew he wanted to ask how my trial among the living had gone."Was the mortal world beautiful?"I thought about it. "It really was.""Beautiful how?"Looking back on those eighteen years, I'd witnessed partings and deaths, grown used to the suffering of ordinary life, and also come to know what it meant to meet someone and fall in love. If I had to name the most beautiful thing of all, I supposed it was human conne

The others hadn't been as vicious as Tyler, sure, but did that make helping him along any less wrong? They'd stood by, cold and indifferent, while Tyler bullied his victims, and afterward, when the grieving parents came looking for answers, not one of them had told the truth. Just because Tyler's father was Principal Knight, did that mean he got to do whatever he wanted? Bully people without consequence? Cross every legal line he pleased?I called back everyone Tyler had gotten killed. If Tyler thought he'd been wronged, what about them? The mother he'd killed walked up to him, cradling her dead infant in her arms. Blood trickled from every opening on her face as she demanded to know why he'd pushed her down the stairs. All she'd done was stop him from messing around with the elevator buttons.Tyler, terrified out of his mind, shook his head over and over in denial, muttering apology after apology. But the woman's nails were already digging deep into his skin.Another victim, a b

Tyler was first up. When I brought him in, he still thought I was just messing with him. It wasn't until the Judge of the Underworld began listing his crimes, one by one, that he realized something was seriously wrong."Age five: deliberately drowned the neighbor's dog.""Age seven: pushed a mother carrying her baby down a flight of stairs, killing them both instantly.""Age ten: spread lies that drove an innocent bystander to their death.""Age fifteen: bullied a classmate until they jumped to their death.""Age seventeen: deliberately swapped someone's eye drops for glue, blinding them for life."Crime after crime was read out, one after another. Tyler tried to protest, insisting he'd never done any of it, that I was slandering him.Thinking he'd simply forgotten, the Judge pulled out a mirror to help refresh his memory. Tyler's childhood self soon appeared within the glass, reflecting back every awful thing he'd ever done. A few flickering moments even showed him spreading ru

Tyler snapped, "This is all special effects! It's makeup! He hired cosplayers for this!"Even with death staring him in the face, he was still putting on an act. I didn't bother arguing with him anymore.Once we arrived, I got off the bus and greeted a few familiar faces. Spotting the Black and White Guards among them, I asked after my father."His Majesty is occupied with something at the moment. Please allow me to escort Your Highness to dinner first."Seeing me get off the bus, the others didn't dare say another word and hurried to follow behind me. The whole way there, every ghost officer we passed stared at them with looks of pure terror. Fair enough. None of them had ever seen anything on this scale before. We made our way to the banquet hall. Looking around, I realized it hadn't changed a bit since I'd left eighteen years ago. Tables carved from skulls, benches built from bone frames, a rug made from the pelt of some creature I couldn't identify, and the same blue ghost-fir

"The forecast said it'd be sunny today. What's going on?""Wait... is he actually the King of Hell's son?"Sensing something was wrong, Tyler cleared his throat."Don't be scared, everyone. He's obviously just putting on a show. There's too many of us for him to try anything.""Right! Nothing to be scared of!"The soul ferry was the vehicle that ran between the mortal world and the underworld, though it looked no different from an ordinary city bus. It pulled up in front of me, and Arthur Crowe waved me over."Prince Nico, the King of Hell heard you were coming home and sent me to pick you and your classmates up personally."I'd specifically asked my father to have Arthur dress in something less terrifying for the occasion.Standing nearby, Tyler overheard the exchange and gave a cold laugh."You even hired someone to play along with your act? Pretty convincing, I'll give you that."With that, he climbed onto the bus and asked Arthur how much he was getting paid to play the p

Worried that Preston and Tyler might clash again, I tried to reassure him."Don't worry about it, Preston. My family has so much money lying around that not even a ghost bothers picking it up!"The moment I said it, everyone burst out laughing. None of them caught that I meant actual ghosts.Preston was worked up. "They're doing this on purpose! They want to watch you humiliate yourself, and they won't hold back once they get to your house!"Tyler asked when we could leave. The Black and White Guards, the underworld's top-performing escorts, only ever brought back one or two souls at a time on their best days. Bringing this many people at once meant I'd have to call my father and check if it was even allowed.Right, I should also remind him to have Agnes make some extra soup."I need to call my father first. I'll let you all know in the class group chat."That night, I used a séance to tell my father what was going on. He refused immediately."Absolutely not! You can't just do
