Chapter 3

Author: Strawberry Spring Roll
Caught in a flood of memories, Fiona kept her eyes glued to Mark's backup phone screen even after it darkened.

It was really hard to reach his heart—he never laughed, barely talked, and only sat in a quiet corner all day, reading books.

The first time she celebrated his birthday, he didn't even look surprised, instead knocked the cake she had baked off her hands and threw away her present.

"No one asked for it," he snorted, and left.

Even so, she stayed by the cake and cried for the longest time—not just because of Mark's cold rejection, but because she knew her father would get upset with Mark if she went home crying.

Still, after everyone went to bed very late into the night, Mark showed up again, quietly cheering her up with his little hand sewn dolls.

Putting up a puppet show, he told her indirectly that because his parents had died in an accident on the same day, he had never celebrated his birthday ever since.

Since then, Fiona learned that Mark wasn't cold—he just needed time to warm up to anyone.

She just had to take her time to slowly overcome those obstacles in his heart, convincing him to trust her and fall for her.

Never could she have expected that doing that would cost her everything.

-

Mark only found out that Fiona was starting work when he saw her at the office and was at once frowning.

"Do you think this is a playground?" He snorted, clearly convinced that she was just a pretty face when she clearly wasn't.

On the other hand, Fiona never looked at him at all, as her eyes remained fixed on his 'assistant'.

Eventually, Mark turned toward her as well, twitching uncomfortably but only for a brief second.

"A new employee?" Fiona eventually asked.

"She's just an intern. You can go home now if you have no other business here," Mark replied shortly.

Fiona snorted—he really couldn't wait to chase her away to protect the woman behind him.

Still, she asked, "Why should I leave? The Starr family owns this company."

Mark glowered right then, and Fiona knew she had hurt his swelling ego with her words.

Labels like 'sponsored suitors' or 'one of Fiona Starr's husband candidates' were always a sore spot for him—he had already accomplished his own achievements, but all of it remained eclipsed under the Starr family's fame.

However, hurting Mark was exactly what Fiona wanted to do, not to mention that wasn't even a fraction of how much he had hurt her in her past life!

As Fiona turned, seemingly leaving, Sue was already reaching out, ready to pat Mark on the back.

That was when Fiona turned around again, and Sue's hands were left hanging in the air.

Even so, Fiona kept staring at her calmly, leaving her instantly pale and flustered in guilt, until Mark passed her a document folder and said, "You can go."

Fiona felt as if a hand clenched around her heart.

Mark's tone was so tender that even he probably didn't notice—it just went to show how protective he was toward Sue.

Then why didn't he just reject Fiona for Sue, even going on to marry Fiona?

It definitely wasn't the Starr family's fault that Sue killed herself, but ironically, Mark blamed Fiona and her father anyway.

Soon after Sue left, Mark's phone jingled.

Fiona was going to leave too when she felt a vice-like grip around her waist abruptly and frowned.

When she turned, she cringed and shuddered when she saw Mark's sinister glare.

It was as if he had shed his skin and revealed his true malicious nature, just as he did in her past life!

Shoving his phone at her face, he growled, "Did you do this?"

Fiona couldn't free herself and eventually gave in and looked at the phone and saw that it was the photo of Sue being molested.

Seeing how calm she was, Mark immediately made up his mind that she was guilty, not bothered to listen to what she had to say.

His hand clenched so hard around Fiona's wrist. Her tears welled up in her eyes, while the corner of her eyes reddened, but she gritted her teeth and fought against the impulse to cry out.

Because she refused to cry for Mark ever again.

"It! Wasn't! Me!" She snarled every syllable through her teeth!

Even as Sue gritted her teeth, her rage seemed to flare further, and she once again slashed at Mark, who started screaming in pain once more.Fiona looked on, her knuckles balling before she knew it.As she watched Sue's endlessly changing emotions, she was now very sure that Sue suffered from some serious mental illness. It was also very clear that Sue never had therapy, given her manic behavior. And before long, Sue sat down, taking a break as if the effort took a toll on her. "You blame me for your parents' death?! But what about me?! I told you I had no choice! There's so many men waiting for me—don't you know how young I was at the time?"Even her words made no sense now, though she had stopped slashing Mark now.She clearly noticed that he was losing a lot of blood, and she'd be a murder if she kept going.Instead, she rose to her feet and slowly walked toward Fiona, her eyes flaring with hatred while her face abruptly contorted savagely. "You had no right to have such a

And Fiona knew that the courier was actually Sue.Even if she had disguised herself well, she still blew it.And for some reason, Sue was still convinced that she was still into Mark and threatened to kill him unless Fiona went where she asked.Yves was worried and ready to follow her, just as he was well aware that Fiona was going for Sue and not for Mark. After all, on their wedding night, Fiona had told him all the secrets she kept sealed in her heart. She had no idea if Yves would believe her, because if anyone else heard it from her, they would just presume that she lost her mind because of Mark's antics. However, Yves didn't.He listened attentively, and his heart broke for what happened to her in the past life.Holding her fiercely in his arms, he promised, "I'll protect you in this life! No one will ever get to hurt you again!"-With every possible preparation in place, Fiona went to meet Sue alone. When she arrived, Mark was lying on the floor miserably, his face p

The minutes felt like years as Fiona and Mark stared at each other from afar, and it was Fiona who turned away first. She even nodded at Bob before leaving without a word, allowing Bob to sigh in relief. After all, it seems that the rumors were true, and Fiona really wasn't interested in Mark anymore. On the other hand, Mark was left staring blankly at the empty doorway. She had seen everything—how miserable he was, and his dignity being trampled all over.-Later, Fiona stepped out of the ladies room to find Mark already waiting outside, flicking ash off his cigarette. He quickly snuffed it out when he saw her—he didn't forget that she hated the scent of tobacco. His chin was covered in stubble, and he had clearly lost at least a pound.Still, he felt a dull ache in his chest when he saw Fiona, as he finally realized how much he missed her.He had restrained himself from seeing her because he knew she didn't want to see him, and he didn't expect that restraint could be so pa

During a gathering with old friends, someone mentioned Fiona's sponsored suitors."Oh, you have no idea! Those fools have absolutely regretted everything once your father fired them. They've been sending their resumes all over the place, but anyone paying attention to the news knows what happened and wouldn't dare hire them!" "Exactly. They strut around like kings, but now that they've lost the support of Fiona's family, no one even has time for them!"Fiona simply listened in silence, twirling her champagne glance.Although those sponsored suitors had joined the chat group used solely to insult her and her father, most of them just wanted to suck up to Mark. But now that the damage was done, no one would ever dare want anything to do with them, and that was more than punishment enough.Still, Fiona wasn't about to hunt them down and drive them to desperation, not to mention that they wouldn't have a problem making a living elsewhere after her father had spent his fortune groomi

If Mark refused to accept his punishment, she would make the call, and the bodyguards would drive up to subdue him, tying him to his car anyway. When that happened, there was nothing Mark could do.While Fiona was ready to punish him regardless, she really didn't expect him to simply agree to it.Still, she soon recovered from her surprise and quietly tied him to the car trunk before getting behind the wheel. She looked at the rearview mirror and saw him lowering his gaze, but when he looked up, she had already looked away.As she floored the pedal, he lurched forward uncontrollably and fell painfully on his knees, while his face was scraped against the road and bled.Fiona smirked as she watched and jammed her foot on the brakes, poking her head out the window to watch and wait until he got up.Before he could speak, she was already back inside and drove forward again, returning the favor of what he did to her in the exact same way, dragging him up and down the mountain. She n

"What are you thinking, Fi?"The wariness in Fiona's eyes faded when she saw her father, and Norman understood right then.Even if Mark did declare his love for her, he didn't know the first thing about her.Otherwise, he would have noticed that she was suddenly wary of everyone around her as a potential threat.Knowing that, there was no way she was going to forgive Mark, and that the hiking trip wasn't really a hiking trip.Clin
